Tom Cruise isn’t as invulnerable at the box office as he used to be (see: Rock of Ages), but WB is entrusting the Mission: Impossible star to carry another 1960s spy TV series-turned movie – in the form of The Man from U.N.C.L.E. adaptation.

Cruise is reported to have begun early talks for Man from U.N.C.L.E., presumably eyeing the role of American spy Napoleon Solo. We’re also hearing the actor is lining up to reprise his Jack Reacher role as the title character, drawing from one of the other seventeen books authored by Lee Child (whose eighteenth Reacher novel arrives this Summer).

Man from U.N.C.L.E. was going to be a reunion for screenwriter Scott Z. Burns and director Steven Soderbergh, with Channing Tatum being considered to star. Studio executives (reportedly) butted heads with Soderbergh on budget and casting, which prompted the director to move on and make Side Effects with Burns and Tatum instead. Sherlock Holmes producer Lionel Wigram and director Guy Ritchie were put in charge of the project after Soderbergh departed.

Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher

A Ritchie-directed take on Man from U.N.C.L.E. could lie in Cruise’s wheelhouse, as his version should feature the A-lister playing the “ordinary man with superhuman durability” type he’s perfected over the years. Soderbergh’s take would have fallen closer to The Informant! meets Haywire, which probably wasn’t a great way to attempt and jump-start a new lucrative franchise set on an international stage.

Will the masses be interested in watching Cruise trotting so close to his Ethan Hunt character, while crossing into Mission: Impossible territory (as far as contemporary spy game thrillers go)? There’s already a fifth Mission installment on the way, one which could reteam Cruise with Jack Reacher director Christopher McQuarrie.

Speaking of which: the Reacher sequel new comes as a surprise, following reports earlier this year suggesting that Paramount will only consider green-lighting the project after its predecessor reaches the $250 million global benchmark (according to Box Office Mojo, it’s at $215.6 million). The followup isn’t a sure thing, but the solid profits on a $60 million investment – coupled with good vibes surrounding Cruise and McQuarrie’s hard-boiled crime/action throwback – have convinced studio heads to not throw in the towel just yet.

Tom Cruise in ‘Oblivion’

Cruise returns to the big screen in next month’s Oblivion, a sci-fi blockbuster that could build on the momentum from Jack Reacher – demonstrating its lead can still draw a sizable audience, outside of when he defies the laws of physics in a Mission: Impossible movie.

Indeed, it would be a nice to see the Cruise/Ritchie Man from U.N.C.L.E. adaptation follow Brian De Palma’s Mission: Impossible - by focusing on cloak-and-dagger espionage rather than cartoonish superheroics – and not repeat the mistakes from Ritchie’s overblown Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. Otherwise, a Jack Reacher followup sounds like the more enticing future Cruise project.

Which sounds better to YOU: Richie’s The Man from U.N.C.L.E. starring Cruise or a Jack Reacher sequel? Do both sound equally promising – or have you gotten your fill of Cruise saving the world on the big screen?

  1. Both. I like Tom cruise

  2. Oh, for god’s sake. Leave “The man from U.N.C.L.E” alone cruise. You’ve already got “Mission Impossible” under your belt.

    • I agree. He’s a fine actor but I don’t see him as Napolean or Ilya. I’d like to see actors that haven’t had the exposure that Mr. Cruise has portray these characters.

      • Fassbender for Ilya and Cillian Murphy for Napolean?? Any other casting ideas?

  3. Tom Cruise.

Did Jack Reacher do that well to warrant a sequel?

    Thank you,

    Reality.

    • I liked it.

    • Jack Reacher was a pretty good movie…

  4. Joaquin Phoenix should play Napoleon Solo.

  5. The Jack Reacher sequel talk isn’t necessarily a new story most of the trades reported when it crossed 200 millions a couple weeks ago that a sequel is more likely but Jack Reacher was good watch the marketing didn’t really do it any favors by calling it “Dirty Harry meets Jason Bourne” they should’ve highlighted the other actual story & the performances by the other cast members. I’d like to see what a sequel would be like especially when you consider the arsenal of story’s that Lee Child’s Jack Reacher has.

The Man from U.N.C.L.E screenwriter wants keep it in the 1960′s so it could be a pretty interesting movie when you add Guy Ritchie’s filming style to a 1960′s Cold War covert-espionage story-line that they want to do, it would seperate it from your regular spy/action thriller.

  6. I think that would be pretty silly after doing mission impossible.

I like Cruise but I hope he doesn’t do this.

  7. As a fan of the Jack Reacher series.

I found Tom Cruise, severely lacking. I know there are some liberties when adapting movies from books…BUT DAMN A Foot or 13 inches depending if you think Tom Cruise is either 5’5 OR 5’4

    I am 6’5 260.

I have a problem seeing Tom Cruise picking up a 400 lb steroid enraged criminal and smashing him to the ground.

  8. cant wait for either, glad to hear jack reacher will hopefully be getting a sequel. you would think almost grossing 4 times your budget would be enough. ive seen films that barely double their budgets get sequels.

  9. I think Tom Cruise would do well in both…I recently saw JACK REACHER and thought it was a very good movie…The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (United Network Command for Law Enforcement) would be a blast, just like MISSION IMPOSSIBLE has been…Is Tom Cruise really as old as his BIO shows?

  10. Tom Cruise: The Man from U.N.C.L.E.

    • Tom Cruise: The man fron U.N.C.L.E. R.O.N. L. H.U.B.B.A.R.D !!!

  11. I want to see Mitch Rapp – with a young Cruise in the lead…where is he?

  12. NO

  13. Please no, he already has ruined one of my childhood favorite when he did the MIF group. Let someone that really would do a good job on it star in it.

  14. Please stay away from The Man from U.N.C.L.E. – it was one of my favorite shows and Tom Cruise just isn’t that good an actor. Why must he ruin another childhood memory!

  15. And David McCallum can reprise his role as Ilya. He still has unbanged fans from long ago that wish to reconnect.

  16. NO! Robert Vaughn & David McCallum did a great job! They continue to provide original and quality TV programming in shows like Hustle & NCIS (#1 CBS)

What’s the matter, Cruise can’t originate anything on his own?

    Always the remake, NO originality!!!

Go ahead, have Cruise do the movie…it will be another FLOP for whomever puts their money into backing the movie…

  17. Hmm, Tom as Napoleon Solo, interesting. With Guy Ritchie it may be closer to the opening of the one Austin Powers movie with Cruise. I really liked Jack Reacher, much better then expected. So a sequel would be good!

  18. PLEASE NO! I loved the Man from Uncle and I also loved all the Jack Reacher books. Tom Cruise you are not half the man Jack Reacher is as a character. Of course your 5’8 and he’s 6’5. Will not pay money to see the Reacher movies or the Man from Uncle.

  19. Man From U.N.C.L.E. would be absolutely awesome. The 60′s high tech got buried in the advances of the modern world, but the stuff they could come up with today would be mind blowing. The IP holders of the MFU have been pretty selfish.. keeping their IP off hulu etc. I’m still waiting for the day they put it back on tv, cable or the web. A new movie would be great too. I remember that show from when i was a kid. One of the few things worth watching on TV.

  20. Tom Cruise is an excellent actor. He was great in a number of demanding artistic roles including Collateral and the Kubrick movie with his ex-wife. Why does he do all these “action” movies like Mission Impossible and all that garbage? {$$$$$$$$$$$} It’s too bad. Look at Nicholas Cage. Ever see him in Leaving Las Vegas? Fantastic and then he got into simply making movies for the money. Heck. Robert Deniro has kinda done that as he’s gotten older…………unfortunately. “Art” goes out the window and becomes subserviant to the almighty dollar. Question. Once you are worth say, fifteen million. How much more do you need?

    • Depends on how many ex-wives you have to support.

  21. Can’t stand Tom Cruise, if he’s in it I for sure won’t be seeing it. I loved The Man From U.N.C.L.E. when I was growing up, I don’t want to see it destroyed by Cruise’s fake tough guy poor acting.

  22. I thoroughly enjoyed “Jack Reacher”; I had never heard of the novels so it was all a pleasant surprise — good story, good acting, no ridiculously cartoonish explosions and shoot-outs (like the very disappointing new Die Hard film). “Jack Reacher” had a STORY and likeable characters, which seems to be getting rarer and rarer in Hollywood films. The relationship with the attorney will hopefully be continued and developed, since Rosamund Pike also gave a good performance.

    • Hmmm Military Sniper…Shoots innocent people.

      Perhaps, DC Sniper?

  23. NO, NO, NO!!!!! I loved “The Man from U.N.C.L.E” when I was a kid- Cruise cannot act and is not intelligent or suave enough to pull this off. There are so many actors that are more talented and capable.

  24. When Tom Cruise acts, I see Tom Cruise, never the character.

    • @ Bill

      You sir are 100% correct.

  25. OH GOD!! Please DON”T let cruise screw up The Man From Uncle I grew up with the show.

  26. God, do all of our ‘dreams’ have to be squashed by a pintsized youknowhat.

Wasn’t it enough punishment that we had to endure him as Jack Reacher and Graf von Stuaffenberg.

    Mercy me…

  27. Can’t Tom Cruise find an original script, or does he need a format to go by?

  28. Yikes! I do not want to see that pint sized weenie as Napoleon Solo (although his lack of stature fits the Napoleon part). Can’t they get a real actor? this guy is terrible in everything.

  29. PLEASE; NO MORE TOM CRUISE IN ACTION MOVIES!!! That is too much of a stretch for his limited chops! What is he 5 feet in real life; without the lifts?
