Tom Arnold Wants to Reteam with Schwarzenegger for ‘True Lies 2′

Published 4 years ago by , Updated August 19th, 2013 at 1:23 pm,

There’s been no shortage of ’80s/’90s action remakes (The A-Team), sequels (Rambo) and spoofs (MacGruber) – not to mention mash-ups (The Expendables) – and the testosterone-fueled trend doesn’t appear to be slowing down any time soon.

Especially if actor, and former husband of Rosanne Barr, has a say in the matter. Not only would the actor like to step back into his True Lies role, as counter-terrorism operative Albert Gibson, he’s banking on the notion that Arnold Schwarzenegger, who played his partner Harry Tasker, is interested in re-entering active acting duty for True Lies 2.

Arnold has managed to keep up a brisk string of jobs since his mid-90s heyday – with a number of supporting roles, TV guest appearances, and four years worth of hosting duties on Fox Sports Net’s The Best Damn Sports Show Period.

However, with Schwarzenegger busting out of Governator duties, it seems Tom Arnold is ready to step back into the big screen action spotlight. The comedian/actor spoke with MovieWeb about his interest in True Lies 2 - asserting that it could be Schwarzenegger’s next project:

“I have read a great True Lies 2 script, and I hope we are able to do it. Knock on wood. Arnold Schwarzenegger is excited. I am excited… We have both read the script. There is a script that James Cameron and a guy named Jeff Eastin, who created the TV show White Collar, wrote. It is really great. Jim can’t direct it. But he can produce it. We hope it gets done. We have a few fun things we want to do. I am supposed to remain cool about this. For me, it would be a lot of fun to work with the guys again.”

Arnold mentions that Jim, aka James Cameron, can’t direct the sequel project – presumably busy with much larger endeavors such as Avatar 2. What he fails to mention is that not only did Cameron produce and direct the original, he also wrote the screenplay. Lofty shoes to fill for sure – and while Arnold doesn’t offer any suggestions regarding who could direct the project – he asserts, “There have always been people who were interested in doing it.” The news of a True Lies sequel also calls into questions pervasive rumors that Cameron was interested in producing a True Lies TV series.

Given Tom Arnold’s history of stoking True Lies 2 talk, especially without any specifics, it’s hard to simply take his word that Schwarzenegger, who is generating tons of buzz weighing choices for his first post-Governor project, is as excited about the project as Tom Arnold is – not to mention whether or not there really is a horde of directors frothing at the mouth for True Lies 2. That said, even Tom Arnold realizes one important point, the ball is in Schwarzenegger’s court. If he wants to do it, it’ll happen. If not, it won’t.

“All I can say right now is, I know that Arnold and I will work together. A lot of people are sending him scripts now. He is carefully going through them, deciding what he wants to do. He wants to have some fun. He wants to do something that is worth his time, but fun. Hopefully, we can get this thing figured out. And we can get something on track. I am just waiting. I am following his lead.”

Arnold doesn’t mention any details about the sequel – such as whether or not former horror icon turned family-friendly film actress, and Activia spokesperson, Jamie Lee Curtis would return as well. Undoubtedly, Curtis was a bigger factor in the success of the original film than Arnold. The surprising comedic chemistry between Curtis and Schwarzenegger, coupled with Cameron’s directing, is what really set True Lies apart from the typical action fare of the time.

If you want to see True Lies 2 make sure to write your local elected official… and demand the Governator return Tom Arnold’s phone calls.

  1. let it happen, ive been waiting for years for it

  2. Not interested in yet another PG-13 rated sequel to an R rated film. Just let it go and retire yourself Arnie, there are some that don’t want you back.

  3. Yeh make it happen!, even if Cameron isn’t direction it’d be still a fun ride seeing the team in another adventure.

  4. They call him “the sand spider”

    Probably cause it sounds scary.

    • LMAO

  5. True Lies is easily one of Arnold’s best movies and also one of Tom Arnold’s most memorable performances as well. I’d love to see a sequel.

  6. Whatever next movie Schwarzenegger does I will watch it opening day. I’ve been impatiently waiting for him to finally bring back some true action n comedy like the old days.

  7. Aslong as James Cameron is involved & all 3 actors are back, im all for it despite it being directed by someone else. But please don’t make it PG-13 like the 4th Die Hard film. I don’t know about the rest of you, but till this day that Jamie Lee Curtis dance scene still gets me everytime. After reading trivia about the film, i read how she caught Arnold off guard when her arm missed the bed’s post & fell and he was gonna help her up. I forget whatelse was said but Cameron loved the shot & kept in the film.

    @ Sully311

    I like this line.

Harry Tasker: Just trying to get a closer look at Beavis & Butt-Head.
Albert Gibson: Well, You do look like Ray Charles. lol.

  8. I honestly don’t want a sequel. I enjoyed the film, but it’s my least favorite among Cameron’s films. There’s really no way you can continue the film other than having the cliched “Child takes over the father’s job”.

  9. look at my avatar, you KNOW i want this to happen!!!!

  10. I was kinda hoping T5 would be his “return” movie. Haha. Oh well.

    • @ foopher

I was hoping Expendables 2 would be his “return” movie than T5. Guess we will see. I liked True Lies but a sequel to that should be saved for last imo so Arnold can do all the action he can for films like Expendables 2. Thats just me.

  11. TRUE LIES 2: Rise of the Pathological

  12. I do sorta want to see this made. I loved the first film, it was as close to an American James Bond movie as you can get, for an old(ish) movie it still holds up very well today, the action sequences still impress.
I have to admit, cinema has missed Arnie’s brand of movies, and now they seem to be making a comeback, then surely he hsould pe a huge part of it. I’d rather see this than another Terminator.

  13. How old is Jaime Lee Curtis btw? Its just the commercials ive seen her in that she’d look like she’ll have to dye her hair so she looks younger. I hope they make a T5 with Arnold involved somehow, aslong as MCG doesnt direct it & it doesn’t have a time-traveling plot to it. Id like to see Arnold in a Predator’s follow-up, But i don’t think a The Running Man remake needs to be done even with Arnold in it.
