spawn1 Todd McFarlane Wants Leonardo DiCaprio for Spawn Reboot

With films like The Dark Knight and Iron Man leading a new wave of successful and critically acclaimed comic book adaptations, it’s safe to say we’ve come a long way since 1997′s Spawn. That film, which for all its visual splendor never really told a coherent story, left a lot to be desired for fans of the franchise, leading many to wish for a reboot.

And if Todd McFarlane gets his way, what a reboot it will be!

In a recent interview with MTV, McFarlane shared some of his hopes for the film, comparing it to Jaws, The Departed, and, if you can believe it, The Godfather. As lofty as McFarlane’s ambitions sound, perhaps none of his hopes are as grandiose as his choice for the film’s lead: Three-time Academy Award nominee Leonardo DiCaprio.

Of course, Leonardo DiCaprio wouldn’t play Spawn. In fact, according to McFarlane, the movie might not even revolve around Spawn, but rather, “the guy chasing Spawn.” McFarlane went on to elaborate that the character would probably not be familiar to fans of the comic.

“We had Sam and Twitch in the book, but because of some of the stuff I’m trying to sell in Hollywood, we might have to change the characters a bit… it would still be a police character who’s chasing down a case and in the middle of this ‘Godfather’-type movie, something weird is out there and no one knows about it except him and a few other people.”

Why would Leo sign on for a Spawn reboot? McFarlane’s says it’s in his family history.

“It’s a big wish, but his dad was a big fan of underground comic books and he came from that.”

Would Leo sign on for a Spawn reboot? It would certainly be a big win for McFarlane if he could get DiCaprio on board, and the actor has found some success in action films, but I don’t know if I can see it happening. On the other hand, I thought Leo was a little baby-faced for his role in The Departed and that turned out to be one of my favorite movies of 2006.

What do you think? Can you see Leonardo DiCaprio in a Spawn reboot or are McFarlane’s sights set to high?

  1. Come on incredible hulk a good movie it was poop. Edward norton is horrible in almost every movie he does, save a few. He killed that movie for me and using the shows origin instead of the obviously superior comic books they defeated the whole point of the character, hulk is about our fears stemming from nuclear energy not a guy who signed up for some super soldier program its dumb to me because it means anybody could become the hulk thus eliminating anything special about the character its totally lame. As for spawn im on board but it doesnt seem like the right movie it is going to be more about a made up character hunting spawn? Why wouldnt spawn just kill him in the first five minutes of the movie pow story over. And who cares who plays spawn he will never talk or be in direct light so it could be morgan freemon lol and it would make no difference then if mike tyson played it. I understand what he is trying to do but a reboot of the actual spawn characters origin and story in trilogy form would be far superior. I mean this story has no sequel potential or real spawn marketability so it better be a truly good story because unlike the incredible hulk where you can just have the character smash things for 2 hours todd will have to actually make us care about random people when comic fans came to see a spawn movie. And sam and twitch better be in there or the movie is a complete bust.

  2. Well, MARVEL, not sure if you know them, but they own the rights to Hulk, decided that was the direction they wanted in their movie. I don’t know if they know what they’re talking about though, I’ve never heard of them… :-P

  3. I like the idea exept it should be about spawn more than anything

  4. if they Cast Leo Dicaprio as Al Simmons\Spawn that will Rock,I’m not saying that he would not a good Sam or Twich but he just seems to fit the part of Al\Spawn assuming that they are Rebooting Spawn [the Film] as that would be cool Don’t You Think.

    And for the Other Characters

    Robin Williams as Clown/Violator
    Jason Issacs as Jason Wynn
    Sir Ian Mckellen as Cogliostro
    Eva Mendes as Wanda Blake-Fitzgerald
    Edward Norton as Terry Fitzgerald
Uma Thurman [wearing a Brunette Wig] as Jessica Priest
    Hugo Weaving as Malebolgia (voice)
    Dackoda Fanning as Cyan Fitzgerald
    Zack Efron as Zack
Patrick Bateman as Glen, Zack’s dad
Micheal Madsen and David Tennant as Sam and Twich
