venom4 Creator Doesnt Think Venom Can Carry A Movie

As part of the Spider-Man 4/5 story that just broke, Deadline Hollywood also reported that Sony is moving forward with a movie about Venom, one of the villains in Spider-Man 3. Without giving specifics, the word is that a pair of screenwriters have been hired to start work on the script.

The interesting thing is that Todd MacFarlane, one of the creators of the character, doesn’t think Venom can work very well as the “hero” of a movie.

In early August Todd MacFarlane spoke to Newsarama.com about the possibility of a Venom spin-off movie. He realizes that the character can’t be too scary due to the PG/PG-13 target for superhero movies, but that even within those parameters he should be made creepier than he was in Spider-Man 3:

“I think you could add a little bit of a creep factor. I mean, it never bugged me to watch Frankenstein as a kid, so you could have a little bit of it, as long as you have a good story backing it up.”

One interesting item that surfaced was the fact that he didn’t design the character to be human in any way. He designed Venom to be a monster/creature, not a suit worn by a person.

MacFarlane said that the reason some villains are so cool is because they’re so “bad” and trying to make them an “anti-hero” ruins the essence of the character:

“The reason they’re so cool as a bad guy is because they’re bad. And as soon as you try to give too much humanity to them, then you go, no! Now they’re not as good as a bad guy because you’re trying to redeem them.”

I’ve questioned in the past how the heck you take a character like Venom and make him the star of his own movie. As MacFarlane says, to work in a movie setting, by the end of the film there has to be some level of goodness in Venom, and that detracts from who he is.

How do you think Venom could work as the star of his own film?

  1. I think with the right director mcfarlanes character will be shown in the light he deserves.Yea the maximum carnage thought is a great idea, but come on to whom ever directed the spider man movie with Venom in it was way off.Venom was and is the Lethal protecter [we] know trust me I have his very 1st solo comic book mint condition, and I have collected his comics ever since.Alot of the marvel movies have been rushing thru details, the only ones that were close were Iron man somewhat hulk, and blade except for the part vampire part,.you see these movies are to pg-13 half of the original fans of these comic characters are 20+years old now.Knock it off directors you sabotaged the x-men stories by rushing thru most of it ..Relax we all love these characters no need to think our attention spans are in nano-seconds you are insulting the adiaunce and the fans.Blade being rated R helped a whole lot ,because without puming up the danger and action in these films you are left with a lot of mushy touchy feely scenes and corny lines.Oh and HULK originated in the SF BAY AREA I have no idea why the new one with the fight club star wasn’t that was wierd ,unless you continued it from that horrible ang lee version in which I don’t think you did marvel,Stan Lee stand up for yourself don’t let the characters you created get hacked away by some director that probably never ever read your comics in his life till he did your comics on film.

  2. SF BAY AREA IS WAITING FOR THEIR VENOM MOVIE.WELL TRUE BELIEVERS TILL LATER KEEP YOUR MARVEL FAITH THAT THE MOVIES WILL BECOME BETTER AND NOT RUSHED THRU.START FROM THE BEGINING .x-MEN LIKE I SAID BE4 WAS A TRAVISTY.THE STORY LAYOUT WAS REDICULOUS ,.DON’T LET THAT HAPPEN TO THE REST.OR REDO THE X-MEN SAGA.THERE IS STILL TONS OF UNCOVERED TERRITORY FOR THE X-MEN ,VENOM,SPIDERMAN,X-FACTOR,FANTASTIC4,ETC..TAKE YOUR TIME DIRECTORS RESPECT THESE STORIES AND CHARACTERS FOR WHAT THEY ARE.DON’T X-MEN IT ,SPIDERMAN WAS OKAY,AGAIN RUSHED THRU THOUGH,I UNDERSTAND THAT YOU DON’T WANT TO BORE THE ADIAUNCE BUT YOU DON’T WANT TO MISINFORM THEM EITHER.
