Former Spider-Man actor Tobey Maguire is set to make his directorial debut by helming an adaptation of the thriller novel Blood on Snow, with Leonardo DiCaprio rumored to star. Maguire has been professionally acting since he was six-years-old. His first appearances on camera were mostly guest spots on various TV shows and an uncredited role in the video game movie The Wizard. His film career took off in 1993 when he was cast in This Boys Life along side his real life friend DiCaprio. It was his role in The Ice Storm four years later that really got his career moving, and he followed it up with the lead roles in Pleasantville and The Cider House Rules before being cast as Peter Parker in Spider-Man and its two sequels. Most recently he’s the voice of Adult Tim in The Boss Baby, currently in theaters.

Aside from acting, Maguire has also produced a handful of films. Some of which he appeared in, such as Seabiscuit and others where he did not, including Rock of Ages and The 5th Wave. He has his own production company, Material Pictures.

THR broke the news about Maguire directing Blood on Snow, the source material for which was written by Norwegian author Jo Nesbø. The screen rights to the book are jointly owned by Material Pictures and another production company – Grey Matter. Maguire’s Material Pictures partner Matthew Plouffe will also produce the film. Grey Matter’s Ben Everard is executive producing, along with author Nesbø and Nesbø’s agent Niclas Salomonsson. Nesbø is currently working on the screenplay.

Originally published under the pen name Tom Johansen, Blood on Snow is the first book in a trilogy about a contract killer named Olav Johansen. After Olav learned he has been sent to kill his boss’ wife, he falls in love with her and decides that she will not be his target after all. Instead, he goes after his boss’ rival. Olav’s story continues in Midnight Sun and concludes in The Kidnapping, potentially promising a trilogy of movies to accompany the three books. The first two novels were published in 2015 with The Kidnapping following in 2016.

Should DiCaprio sign on to star, it would be the latest collaboration between the two longtime friends. They have worked together numerous times throughout their careers, most recently as the two leads in Baz Luhrmann’s adaption of The Great Gatsby. Since Maguire is directing and his company Material Pictures is producing, DiCaprio’s casting as Olav certainly seems likely, though nothing has officially been announced yet. Since winning his elusive first Oscar for The Revenant, DiCaprio has been rumored to appear in many projects, but has yet to officially move forward on one. Hopefully Blood on Snow can be the one to bring him back into the fold.

Blood on Snow does not have a release date. We will keep you updated on its development.
