Summary

  • The strongest Ninja Turtle may vary by iteration, but recent projects hint that Michelangelo could be the most powerful member.
  • While Raphael boasts raw strength and Leonardo excels in swordsmanship, Donatello's intellect and gadgetry make him a force to be reckoned with.
  • Michelangelo, though undisciplined, has untapped potential, possibly making him the strongest turtle in some recent TMNT adaptations.

While the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles make for an ideal team, many fans wonder who the strongest Ninja Turtle really is. Donatello, Raphael, Leonardo, and Michelangelo all have different skills and abilities shown in the comics, video games, cartoons, and movies. While they're brothers-in-arms, they're not equal. Leo might be the leader, and Raph the toughest, but Donnie's intellect and Michelangelo's wackiness can be assets. Most iterations of the Ninja Turtles share the same origin story, but the strongest Ninja Turtle may depend on the particular iteration of the heroes.

There have been so many reboots, reimaginings, and TMNT adaptations throughout the decades that naturally have differences between them. Aside from the more obvious examples like the animation styles, some of these variations apply to how the Ninja Turtles are portrayed both in and outside of battle. However, with the Turtles being as iconic as they are, certain traits have carried over to nearly every version. There is some degree of consistency with regard to their physical abilities, and there have been developments in the TMNT canon that could point to which Ninja Turtle is the strongest.

Raphael

Brute Strength And Hot-Headed

Raphael is the most physically powerful of the four Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, as well as the most reckless. Due to their mutation, he and all three of his brothers possess considerable super strength, but at least in this area, Raphael is a few levels above the others, and this is an element of his character that nearly all adaptations of the Turtles share. Raphael is capable of incredible physical feats. He can deliver punches that send opponents flying through the air, smash through walls with ease, and break weapons wielded by characters like Leonardo and even Shredder himself.

The hot-headed red bandanna Ninja Turtle, who is certainly aware of how much he outclasses the others in raw power, tackles most of his problems with brute force though it doesn’t always work. Despite all his power, it’s not enough in some versions of the story. While the 2007 animated TMNT movie portrayed Raphael as a hero who’s perfectly capable of holding his own when fighting solo, there have been numerous occasions in the comics and the cartoons where this approach lacks effectiveness.

Raphael may have the most brute strength, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that he’s better than the rest.

When it comes to who is the strongest Ninja Turtle, Raphael may have the most brute strength, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that he’s better than the rest. Raphael's strength was on full display in the Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series and film. He uses the trademark tonfa as a weapon, but they also have the ability to amplify his physical power with red mystical energy constructs.

On top of that, Raph gets new sais that even allow him to make clones of himself. However, the version of Raphael that appears in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem becomes unfocused while fighting, though he remains a physically strong fighter.

A number of TMNT mutants were introduced in the '90s, and have since been reimagined in the current canon. Here's 10 changes that'll shock '90s fans!

Leonardo

A Brave Leader And Skilled Swordsman

Leonardo is the polar opposite of Raphael in terms of their fighting styles. He is much less powerful than Raphael, but he makes up for that in other ways. He has a reputation for being the most disciplined member of the team which is why Leonardo is traditionally the team’s leader. With Leonardo's dual swords in TMNT lore, he’s a highly focused character who has spent a great deal of time honing his skills as a swordsman. This was especially true in the fan-favorite TMNT animated series from the early 2000s.

...he’s arguably the most skilled fighter among them.

Most warriors who use katanas typically only use one sword because they’re meant to be two-handed weapons, but Leonardo has cultivated enough skill with the blades to expertly wield two at once. Based on what’s been seen of Leonardo, he’s arguably the most skilled fighter among the Ninja Turtles, and he’s shown to have a diverse set of talents that extend beyond his swordsmanship and ninjitsu training. He’s also well-versed in multiple forms of hand-to-hand combat, and in Nickelodeon’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon, he was taught how to heal others using the energy within his body.

Leonardo's katanas also give him the ability to teleport himself or others in Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, adding another layer of strength to an already impressive character. Meanwhile, Mutant Mayhem works somewhat as an origin story, so it's there that he has to blossom into the leader he's often depicted as in other iterations of the franchise.

Donatello

Physically Weaker But A Brilliant Mind

The inventive Ninja Turtle Donatello is far behind Raphael in strength and Leonardo in fighting ability. Even so, Donatello is still a formidable warrior who should be taken seriously, mostly because of his intelligence. Though he wasn’t always portrayed this way, for the past two decades Donatello has been the brains behind the Turtles. He uses his genius intellect to invent vehicles and gadgets that can be useful in combat. It’s through his mind that he makes his contributions to their battles.

The bo staff indicates that it may be the most efficient of all the Turtles’ weapons.

After all, all four Turtles have the same master, so while they do have varying levels of expertise, each of them gets their knowledge from the same source. A point of interest concerning Donatello is his weapon of choice (which is often a source of physical comedy in TMNT as much as a combat tool). Even though Donatello wields a bo staff – which some may perceive as less dangerous than Leonardo’s katanas, Michelangelo's nunchakus, or Raphael’s sai – he has demonstrated in many fights that it’s incredibly deadly in combat.

In the 1980s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle animated series, Donatello could jab it straight through steel. Furthermore, Donatallo’s performance with the bo staff indicates that it may be the most efficient of all the Turtles’ weapons. Dontaello's penchant for technology was clear in Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as the turtle was often assisted by a sidekick drone named S.H.E.L.L.D.O.N.

Instead of utilizing magical weapons like his brothers, he focused on high-tech weapons at first, though he attained a mystic bo staff over time. In Mutant Mayhem, there wasn't really anything specific in terms of power for Donatello, though he did undergo a physical change by wearing glasses.

Michelangelo

Unfocused With A Lot of Potential

Michelangelo, the silliest member of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, doesn’t have the edge that Raphael has or the highly disciplined mind of Leonardo. A key problem Michelangelo faces as a Ninja Turtle is his failure to put in the required effort for training. This wasn’t an issue for him at first, but it was added to his character in the late 1980s Ninja Turtles comics and was also implemented in most of his animated and live-action portrayals. In these stories, Michelangelo is depicted as a character who lacks the commitment needed for him to excel in ninjitsu as well as he could.

... if he showed more discipline, he could surpass all the other Turtles.

Master Splinter once said in an interactive prequel comic to the Nickelodeon series that Michelangelo has untapped potential. Splinter even went a step further by saying that his raw talent was so impressive that if he showed more discipline, he could surpass all the other Turtles. This assessment is consistent with what fans have witnessed from Michelangelo over the years. Regardless of the fact that he doesn’t train as hard or as often as characters like Leonardo, he usually wields a pair of nunchucks similar to Bruce Lee, which is one of the hardest weapons to master in martial arts.

He’s also noted for his superior agility. Plus, Michelangelo has beaten his fair share of powerful adversaries (including his teammates on certain occasions) during his many adventures as a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle. Like Donatello, Mutant Mayhem's Michelangelo didn't seem to wield any special abilities, likely since the team is only just learning to be heroes. However, he's the wild card of the group in Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and even has the ability to control will. He helps send Casey Jones back in time in the Netflix film, showing how powerful he is.

While there's not an overarching TMNT canon in the truest sense, there is a meta-canon that's evolved over the course of the Ninja Turtles' multiple reincarnations. Several recent TMNT projects, both on the screen and in comics, have leaned into the idea that Michelangelo is the strongest Ninja Turtle. In 2020's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin comic, Mikey is the TMNT's Last Ronin by outliving his brothers and avenging their deaths in a dark future. Mikey's identity as the black-masked turtle Ronin wasn't revealed until late into the story and served as a shocking revelation that fans loved.

In the 2022 Netflix movie Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Casey Jones is sent back to the present from a battle-ravaged future by Mikey, who is now an aged turtle with robes and all kinds of mystic powers. TMNT: Mutant Mayhem presented yet another chance to establish who the strongest Ninja Turtle but the movie showcased each of the four Ninja Turtles as being talented warriors without much difference in strength. The question of who is most powerful among the much-loved Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles remains with passing variations.
