Avatar - James Cameron

With his 3D CGI, Motion-Capture extravaganza Avatar on the way at the end of the year, just what else has James Cameron got on the horizon? Well, how about taking some of his past movies and transforming them into 3D as well? Word is that Cameron is thinking about doing his mega-success Titanic in 3D, and maybe Terminator 2, as well.

On top of this news, we also have a brand new image from Avatar, which shows the director himself getting in on the action. Sweet.

Cameron spoke with Empire at Comic-Con recently where he gave his thoughts about his love of 3D technology. It is here that he mentioned his plan to bring Titanic to three-dimensional life:

“We’re going to do Titanic in 3-D! We’ve already done a 90 second clip of it and it’s phenomenal and gorgeous, so that’s going to be the project for next year. It’s a conversion of it, not native photography; we can’t go back.”

Cameron also went on to address the question of whether he’d like to turn any of his other past projects into 3D:

“You know, we’ve thought about Terminator 2, which could be fun because I think that’s a film that stands the test of time for me. I think that Aliens was a really good film in its time, but visually it doesn’t quite hold up; we’ve kind of evolved beyond that now. I mean, for me it doesn’t. Terminator 2, I think, is the cusp of where it still holds up, through now. True Lies, I don’t think so; it doesn’t feel right to me. Titanic absolutely, slam dunk! I want to see it!”

.

Titanic

It appears that Titanic is almost definitely going to be coming at us in 3D, and Terminator 2 is more of just a, “We’d love to do it,” kind of thing. Even though Cameron says the clip they’ve done of Titanic is, “phenomenal and gorgeous,” I’m still not sold on the idea – or the idea of doing any of his other projects in 3D for that matter. Would Titanic or even Terminator 2 REALLY benefit from being in 3D?

With regards to Titanic, in particular, it obviously would be pretty impactful to feel like violent waters and a sinking boat are actually in the movie theater with you. And doing a re-release in the 3D format would certainly further it’s already whopping $1.8 billion revenue at the box office.

But am I the only one who thinks Titanic is fine the way it is?…

  1. I don’t really care about Titanic being in 3D. I’m sure at least some of the reason for him doing it is financial. He knows he stands to make money off of that.

Terminator 2, however, I’d give me left testicle to see that movie in 3D. That would be amazing! It really does stand the test of time and is one of the best movies ever made.

  2. Hell yeah! Bring on Titanic 3-D!!

  3. T2? Heck yeah! Titanic? Well, maybe the scenes of the ship sinking, but that’s about it. Titanic was a great film but I don’t have a want to see it in 3D.

I have stopped going to midnight shows since X3 let me down soo hard. But Avatar is starting to make me rethink that decision. Like you said, it may not live up to the hype but we are talking about James Cameron, geek god! :-)

  4. I like “Titanic”, but I couldn’t care less if it was in 3D or not, however T2 in 3D would be bad ass.

  5. I’d rather see Aliens in 3-D

  6. How about T2 in 3D, followed by an intermission, followed by Aliens in 3D?

  7. I’d be in line for that one, Kahless. Respect to Cameron for the realistic self-assessment. I can’t imagine Michael Bay ever saying anything like that about his own movies.

  8. Aliens in 3D… ooooohhhh.

    Vic

  9. Geek heaven!

  10. Aliens !..All the way, hell I just want to see it on the big screen, Its so hard to watch classic movies on the big screen in glasgow

  11. Terminator 2 is like the most overrated movie of all time. I hate the first 3 movies in that series.

  12. OLA all!

just thought id chime in and let dude man know hes nuts!

    lol

na but seriously t-2 with all those crazy shape shifting things the t 1000 does and aliens with the mouth inside the mouth thing.. awesome

  13. Any reason to watch T2 or Aliens in the theater… Too bad he doesn’t want to do Aliens. But can’t wait for T2!!!!

  14. T2 in 3D yes, Titanic no – dumb idea.

And that pic with Cameron isn’t even from the movie. why keep rubbing it in our face that he hasn’t shown us anything?

  15. T2 in 3D would be awesome! Titanic in 3D doesn’t really peak my interest.

  16. @dude man

So if you hated the first 3 Terminator movies does that mean you think Terminator Salvation is the best in the series? I just want to clarify.

  17. Dude man…wow

3rd movie yes. Salvation also a disappointment.

However, the first 2 movies were revolutionary for their time and T2 stand the test of time in both visuals and story.

If you think T1 and T2 are bad movies I just don’t know what to tell you.

  18. I didn’t mind Salvation, I mean it was better than T3 and the action was awesome.

  19. Titanic is gorgeous as it stands
and could not be gorgeous in 3D.

I do not buy the premise 3D is an advancement
in the motion picture experience and
there is more hype than reality
    to its altered reality.

3D claims to be a more immersible experience and the
obvious level it is while at the same time it is necessarily a
distraction taking you out of the film while trying to draw you in.

The net effect is less, not more.

  20. I must agree about T1 and T2 – they were great. T2 i just watched for the 100th time the other day and it is still an awesome movie even with outdated fx. that’s why 5 to 10 years from now Avatar will probably still be considered incredible (I haven’t seen it obviously) but that’s the effect Cameron has on the movie world. His technology and story telling direction is leaps and bounds above everyone else. Here’s to hoping Avatar lives up to the hype.

  21. @The Critic

There are some scenes in T2 where te effects STILL look great, better than some effects in newer movies… Well, obviously not the effects in big budget things like Transformers, lol. But still very impressive.

If that dude guy thinks T1 and T2 sucks, then really, what does it matter what he says about movies? He probably liked Battlefield Earth, lol. :-D Just kidding, nobody is THAT dumb… :-P

    @Robert Palmer

Don’t like 3D? Don’t watch it then… You can thank me later for coming up with that solution for you, just remember you owe me. ;-)

  22. Titanic in 3D? Dear lord… I cant’ even imagine how it could be something special. Wait, that scene when the iceberg hit the ship would look great, and all the sinking, but that’s really about all of it that’s worthy of the changing. Plus, the film doesn’t need any more money.
Lol, maybe George Lucas has thought about it and wants to transform all the Star Wars films into 3D too :D That would be kinda cool

  23. Seeing Winslet bare but naked in 3D might be nice :D

  24. Support 3D now and within 8 years most films (besides independents) will be in 3D… (Its up to us to let it happen or stop it)

3D may look neato but overall its a subversive media. Cameron is only enabling technology to overtake us (so to speak) as 3D will be used for marketing and subliminal purposes.
I have no interest in supporting 3D even with a T2 version. 8-O
    Titanic I couldn’t care less,,,

  25. Man,I’ve watched so many movie and so much tv, you would think that I would be a complete and utter slave of subliminal advertising, or even regular advertising for that matter since I don’t have a DVR to get rid of them. But yet, I don’t ever buy anything I haven’t already been using or don’t already need. I have never had any weird compulsion to try something I didn’t like before… The only times an advertisement have gotten me to a store was if it was an ad for a deal for something I needed to buy anyhow.

But I’ll just assume it’s all because I have such a strong mind that subliminal messages don’t work for me. Yes, no applause please, no no, get up, no need to bow down before me… :-P

Anyway, I’m not worried. Weak-minded people need to be told what to do anyhow… just kidding, lol.

  26. I truly believe that 3d is becoming a ploy so that people will come see bad movies with no character or plot development. As much as I love Cameron and am looking forward to this movie I have heard so many people talk about how derivative of Aliens this plot is. For Cameron’s sake I hope people are wrong.

  27. Guys, I think dude man was kidding, except maybe not about T3. Since this is a thread about sci-fi, I don’t think there is a fan of sci-fi that didn’t like T1 and T2.

  28. @Ken J
I don’t think these are the droids we are looking for.

You may go about your business.

    Move along, move along.

    :-D

  29. @Vin

Seriously? Someone said this sounds like Aliens? Why because there are Marines and there are Aliens? EGAD!… Yah…

    LOL @ John :-D
