ABC’s ‘Titanic’ Miniseries Casts Linus Roache & Toby Jones

Toby Jones and Linus Roach board ABC's Titanic miniseries.

The four-part miniseries about the famous nautical disaster has been a long time coming, but Titanic ads three to the crew today as Linus Roache, Toby Jones and Geraldine Somerville join the cast.

Titanic, like it’s real-world namesake, is being produced in Britain. British network ITV will begin filming in Hungary this month. ABC has contracted to air the miniseries in the United States next April, on the 100th anniversary of the ship’s maiden voyage and sinking.

Linus Roache will be familiar to Screen Rant readers as Bruce Wayne’s father Thomas in Batman Begins. He was also the last ADA on the original Law & Order series, riding out its final three seasons in the main prosecutor slot.

Toby Jones played novelist Truman Capote in Infamous and Swifty Lazar in Frost/Nixon. He’s also appearing as second-fiddle supervillain Arnim Zola in the upcoming Captain America: The First Avenger. By far his most visible role is one for which he isn’t seen: Jones provides the voice for Dobby the house elf in the Harry Potter series.

Fellow Potter cast member Geraldine Somerville has also been attached to Titanic. She has played Harry’s murdered mother Lily in every one of the movies, appearing in various flashbacks and the like.  She’ll be appearing in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 this summer.

The series is written by Julian Fellowes, who penned The Tourist last year in addition to decades of acting and writing gigs. The series will utilize a split narrative, following different characters from the lowest passenger decks to first class as the disaster unfolds.

Comparisons to James Cameron’s 1997 film are inevitable. And in this case, they’re appropriate: the mega-producer is planning to re-release Titanic into theaters in 2012 with a 3D makeover. Perhaps both projects can benefit from some unofficial cross-promotion.

Titanic represents a return to the miniseries format for ABC and broadcast channels in general. The big four networks have been content to let their cable counterparts have the run of the format for years. Perhaps the recognizable scenario and auspicious centennial will draw in viewers hungry for episodic drama.

  1. Hmmm, interesting. Can’t wait to watch it,of-course ill record it & watch it later probly knowing it will probly be that long. I enjoyed the 1996 tv movie Titanic that starred George C. Scott. Ive seen every Titanic movie made except for the very first one way back, forget what year it was but think it was a silent film? Not sure, Just seen scenes of it on vhs tape of Secrets Of The Titanic. Of-course James Cameron’s film is my favorite to date about the disaster. I first got into Titanic with books in the 4th grade if you can believe that. Like Cameron mentioned before, it was like a great novel that really happend. And as Historians say & i agree with, what happed back then was a wake-up call that we’re not the most powerful force on earth which they thought they could. One thing i liked about the 1996 tv Titanic movie was it was the first time you see the bow of the ship go down under water. I can’t wait to see Cameron’s Titanic again theaters, whether its 3d or not. Id like to see it on the big screen again.
