If you didn’t think Roland Emmerich’s disaster spectacle 2012 had enough destruction in it – and lacked a pivotal third dimension – then here’s some news you’ll be interested in. James Cameron’s Oscar-winning and box office behemoth, Titanic, will be getting a 3D re-release in the Spring of 2012.
We’ve heard rumblings for a long time that Titanic would eventually get a 3D release and more recently Cameron said the aim was to release it in spring of 2012 to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the titular ship’s sinking. Now Los Angeles Times – in a piece celebrating Titanic actress Gloria Stuart’s 100th birthday – has confirmed the aim by saying that Cameron is, “converting the blockbuster into 3-D for re-release in April 2012, the 100th anniversary of the ship’s sinking.”
Now that we know that Titanic will be coming at us in more than two dimensions, it begs the question does it really need to be converted? Aren’t we overrun already with new 3D movies without delving more than a decade into the past and converting a film for re-release? That’s the way I look at it.
However, with Titanic being the second highest-grossing movie of all time (behind Cameron’s own Avatar – he really IS the king of the world!
), I’m sure Cameron is confident it can add a lot more to its $1.8 billion gross, especially with the extra cost of 3D ticket prices.

The thing that bothers me most is not the fact that Titanic is getting a 3D re-release but that it’s being converted into 3D. Now I know that’s an inevitability – unless Cameron can utilize some of the Terminator time travel technology – but this will likely mean the crappy kind of 3D that comes from adding the extra dimension after-the-fact. Those of you unlucky enough to catch Clash of the Titans, for example, will know just how bad post-production 3D conversion can be. Yes it’s Cameron, the Avatar pioneer himself doing the converting, but still…
We’ve now gotten to the point where it’s not just new movies that are in danger thanks to the 3D craze – old movies can’t even hide under the cover of the past. Watch out Wizard of Oz…
What are your thoughts on Titanic getting a 3D re-release? Up for sinking once more, this time in 3D or is this taking things too far? Sound off in the comments below.
Look for Titanic 3D in theaters sometime in April, 2012.

Well I always wanted to see titanic on the big screen so I’m still seeing it!!!! Can’t wait!!! And I sooooo want it on blu ray:)
i thinck it so fake
I agree with you. Giving \Titanic\ a 3D re-release is totally unnecessary. That doesn’t even mention that it might not make much money. How many re-releases do good numbers at the box office? Of course, I realize we’re talking \Titanic\ but still, how many people are really craving to see a movie they’ve likely seen multiple times already in 3D?
I’d watch Star Wars uncountable times in 3D.
This seems terribly unnecessary to me.
Is Cameron just trying to prove that he can decide on a whim which movie he wants to be the highest grossing film at any one time. lol
Well at least it’s not a reboot or something. I’m looking forward to it.
this is TOTALLY a waste..wtf cameron???
I liked ‘Titanic’, but I don’t wanna see this film (or any film) in 3-D.
Really 2 minds on this one, part of me is a bit, shall we say “hesitant” on seeing this converted, mainly due to the, as stated, post-production 3D conversion quality, but on the other hand, I think 3D could add a whole different “feeling” this this movie, for example the shots where we are looking down the long hallway that is slowly filling with water, the shot from within the water shortly after the ship sank with all the people and debris, and when the stern comes completely out of the water and we literary ride it down into the waves…if it turns out anything like the IMAX 3D documentary Ghosts of the Abyss, I would be willing to sit for the butt numbing 3+ hrs…
Never been a 12 year old girl so I only saw it once and no interest in seeing it again. I’ll never understand how this made an Oscar. It’s not an awful movie but it wasn’t Oscar worthy.
This is just another example of the self important Cameron trying to stroke his massive ego.
Re releases should not count toward the box office records imagine if other films re released them selves like Cameron or Lucas do with their films to boost their egos. TDK re release in 2039 to coincide with Batmans 100th anniversary.
Of course its oscar worthy!!! Best movie ever
Spoken like a 12-year-old boy.
Camercon is just a money hungry grunt. Is he for real with this. This movie came out in 1996, it would have been 16 years ago (2012) therefore all these little 10-13 year old girls are now 26-29 year old girls. They now should be smarter than to spend almost 20 bux a tick to see a movie they have already seen in 3D. The girls taht are 10-13 in 2012 wont care at all because twilight is the new obsession and because they probably have seen the movie on TV already. Men, boys oviously will not care about this. I hope this “tanks”
I hate you James Cameron
actually my best friend and i are 13, so we will be 14 at the time of this movie, and we are so excited to see the titanic. we hate twilight so not all the little kids like twilight, we’re already planning on buying tickets. so you’re wrong.(:
If Cameron wants to convert one of his movies to 3D it should be Terminator 2 … now that would be awesome!
@ Ben R
I think Cameron plans to release T2 aswell in 3-d. Only id like to see the other version of the film instead. I wouldnt mind seeing Titanic again in 3-d.
teším sa na TITANIC 3D .A rád by som videl Jurský park . I like see TITANIC 3D but Jurassic park like see from Slowakia
So it won’t release in 2d?!? I’d rather see it at the movies in regular format……
I don’t want to revist high school days again by watching this movie on the big screen again.
They already have test footage in 3d which is far better than regular conversions such as Clash. Personally, Titanic is my favorite movie of all time so I would see it once in 3d. Just because Ive seen it so many times in 2d it would give a diff experience I feel. imo
i can see it now..cameron will have others following this insane stupidity…mark my words
I have always respected James Cameron as a consummate film maker. Therefore he should consider “Titanic” a finshed masterpiece.
I was shocked to hear that he is willing to destroy that masterpiece by “converting” it to 3D. Unless he has discovered a miraculous way to make 3D out of 2D, he is acting as a man gone mad. The only way that could truly work would be to remake “Titanic” in 3D. Something that would really be insane.
The more I think about it, the more my mind boggles at the thought of converting “Titanic” into 3D.
I do not think James Cameron will be putting his name to an inferior quality conversion the likes of Clash of the Titans was. I am sure that when they do this conversion, it will the best it can be.
However, I am still not sold on the 3D concept at all. I like the idea of it, but I do not feel it adds to a movie. The problem I have with it is that it seems to ruin any sense of scale.
The trouble is Brian, most people don’t know what binocular vision is and why it is essential to have a left eye view and a right eye view in order for the brain to fuse them into a stereoscopic image. If you have nothing but the regular 2D or one eyed view of a scene taken with only one lens, you can do all kinds of mathematical manipulation with that image, but you must wind up with an eye straining “3D” image which looks bad no matter how you look at it. If Cameron has come up with a bona fide system that can really make a 2D image into a 3D image, I’m sure the cost incurred in post production to accomplish that would be prohibitive. I have been shooting stereo slides since 1952, so I’m not speaking from reading just one or two books on the subject.
Ross i was just wondering, do you have any idea when a blu ray version of titanic will come out, i can never seem to find it.
Matthew,
Last rumor I read said some time in 2011.

lets be honest, James Cameron is a genius for doing this redo in 3D, why you ask, well In my opinion James Cameron always seems to push the “current” technology (when he’s making a film) to its limits or beyond, just look at the effects/CGI needed for the T-1000 from T2, or the Sea/alien creatures of the abyss, to everything AVATAR related, I think that for him going back and choosing to convert Titanic to 3D first is not at all a “money grab” as some people are thinking, its more about improving the technology and learning how to do something right. Starting with Titanic just makes the most amount of since, for several reasons such as:
1. Financial Backing: Titanic is the 2nd the most successful movie of all time, was only topped by a movie made by the same guy! Studios, producers etc are a lot more likely to hand over money to create/refine the technology needed to do this type of conversion correctly.
2. Viewers: Yes we all know that Titanic set box office attendance records, but its not the “how many” but more importantly the “who” went to see this movie? Everyone!, this movie appeals to everyone , male, female, young, old…attendance to a titanic 3D remake would be higher then any other 3D convert.
3. Financial Return: just due to the above this movie convert and re-release would make more money then any other…
4. Timing: With the success of Avatar, James Cameron is like Gold right now, everyone wants more from him!
By starting with Titanic, James can pretty much have all the money he needs to create/refine/redesign the technology and process needed to do a 2D to 3D conversion correctly…THEN he can take that process/technology and do other 3D coverts at a fraction of the cost ie T2, Aliens, The Abyss…and also “rent” the process to others…
Just like BETA/VHS to DVD to BluRay was, 3D is just the next step in the Movie/TV viewing evolution and I personally love 3D and I am so happy and relieved that it’s the person with the 2 top movies of all time leading the way and I pray that this trend continues so that I can get to watch some of my old favorites in 3D…
well this is a crap waste of time and money
Two words: MONEY GRAB!
I read an article back in February or March, and it said that quite a few scenes from Avatar were converted, and Cameron stated it himself i believe. To be honest, those scenes where S. Lang is making those speeches in that one room looked just a little less, immersive, than the rest of the film. But it still felt like you were there, lol ;D
P.S. Vic, or Ross, if you wouldn’t mind, i would like to post a link to this article that states what im inferring
Eli P,
No need to ask permission to link back to us.

Wow, the 3d is going to suck. This is just cameron trying to milk the last drops from titanic. I mean really, how is one going to make a decent 3d movie fom a 2d movie. Its just not posible bo me it any good. But bill tell u whats going to happen. Budget – 30,000,000. (Even though they aren’t doing really anything …) gross revenue – 1.1 billion lol
i love this idea!
I don’t know about you guys, but im really excited!
Whats the big deal?
I’ve watched titanic an uncountable number of time….I’ll watch it’s 3d too….HATS OFF TO CAMERON
I think it would be awesome. Expecialy at the part where they are on the front of the boat and getting to see rose with her arms open and coming to you! Woah I can not wait! this is gonna be awesome!!!
I think it would be great, especially with scenes like when the ship hits the iceberg and see chucks of ice underwater break off. And the part when the stern goes beneath the waves near the end. If Cameron releases T2 in 3-d, i hope its the expanded cut with Kyle reese dream sequence of scenes not in the threatrical cut. Not Just that, I hope to see the original Terminator aswell, 3-d or not.
I’m looking forward to seeing one of my all time favorite films. It has something for everyone; action adventure, romance, intrigue, and above all a good story. It was most deserving of all Oscars it won. Too bad Leonardo wasn’t nominated as best actor. I’ll gladly sit through it again. My guess is that I’ve seen it at least 15 times thus far and have two DVDs’ the first release as well as the special edition. I haven’t ventured into the Blue Ray territory yet. Hopefully, the re-release will make it an even bigger seller than Avitar, a good film, but not my cup of tea. James Cameron is tops in my book.
Personally, I’m positively ecstatic that they’re going to re-release it in 3D! I was too young to see it in theaters when it came out, so I’m glad I’ll have the opportunity to see it in 3D! My only worry is that I’ll be sitting in the theater crying my eyes out at the end, and that everyone will think I’m a lunatic
I’m such a sapp, I guarantee I’ll be full on sobbing through the entire second half of the movie! I can’t wait for it!
