‘Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy’ Set Photos Reveal Tom Hardy’s New Look

Tom Hardy is one of the biggest breakout stars of 2010, having co-starred in Christopher Nolan’s Inception and been cast as an unknown major player (perhaps Hugo Strange?) in the upcoming Batman threequel, The Dark Knight Rises.

One of the more interesting things about the Hardy, acting-wise, is that he seems to have no issue drastically altering his appearance for the purposes of any particular role. In Bronson, he gained weight, shaved his head, and grew a mustache that Burt Reynolds would envy. Now, in photos from the set of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, Hardy appears to be sporting tattoos and a hairstyle that I endearingly refer to as “The Andy Samberg.”

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy is directed by Swedish filmmaker Tomas Alfredson, the man who brought us possibly the best, scariest vampire movie of the past few years, Let the Right One In, and has a top-notch cast including Gary Oldman, Ciaran Hinds, Jared Harris, Colin Firth, Benedict Cumberbatch, Mark Strong, and Svetlana Khodchenko.

Based on the British spy novel of the same name by John le Carré and set in the Cold War of the 1970s, the story sees Oldman’s character, a retired MI6 agent named George Smiley, called out of retirement when a high-ranking Secret Service agent is suspected of being a Soviet mole. Typical Soviets!

Due to the source material and the directing and acting talent involved, this is easily one of my most highly anticipated movies of 2011. From what little can be gleamed from the Istanbul set photos below, the movie looks highly atmospheric. (Check out that rain! And the cobblestone street! Be still my heart.) Additionally, I’d basically watch anything and everything with Gary Oldman in it, but especially something that sees him playing an ex-MI6 agent come out of retirement.

Check out the set photos:

For those who don’t see the Andy Samberg resemblance, I submit the following:

It’s not so much that the haircut itself resembles Samberg’s; rather, the long hair makes Hardy look quite a bit like Samberg. Yes? No? Maybe so? Ah, well.

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy is filming now and is expected to hit theaters September 16th, 2011. One wanders how much Tom Hardy will change up his look for The Dark Knight Rises – then again, I suppose that depends entirely upon who he’ll be playing.

  1. Someone post a pic from Star Trek Nemesis. That shows Tom Hardy yet again looking like another person entirely.

  2. You know a lot of those tattoos are real, right? He’s heavily tattooed from his druggie days.

  3. Oh, yea, I see Andy Samberg.

  4. dude dude is buff and he’s playing Robin in batman rises

    • ???

    • huh

    • Ummmmm, I can gurantee you that Hardy WON’T play Robin in TDKR. I can also gurantee you that Robin (may be Dick Grayson, but I doubt it) WON’T be in the film. Even if Nolan featured Grayson in the movie, he would be young, and way too old for Hardy to play. Hardy is a great actor, but I doubt he could pull off a 10 year old lmao.

  5. Great actor, my pick for Eddie Brock/Venom

  6. Lol I’ll love when people keep on saying “maybe Hugo strange?” lol xD Heck no man!. He dosent even look like a Hugo Strange. Hugo is much older. I bet my ball’s he is going to be Black Mask, Dead Shot, Hush or that bad ditective Bullock. Or! (it will be funny get’s use in surprise) The Mad Hater. Mad is British like him… So who know’s. I just know is not Hugo, vane, crock, clayface, ect… It dose not fit him.

    • Since when have Nolan’s version of the Batman villains “fit” the comic book’s? Liam Neeson is a white Englishman, whereas Ra’s al Ghul of the comics is Middle-Eastern and of Chinese descent.

  7. Bronson could beat the heck out of the Dark Knight

  8. Andy Samberg??? Looks more like Jeff Daniels on Dumb and Dumber to me!

  9. The one side by side pic he looks like a young Keanu Reeves sporting a blonde die job. The pic way up at the top with the tats, he looks like a little like Don Johnson’s younger days (although bigger).

  10. Despite the bullet proof cast i can see this being deemed to arts and not getting the big cinema release it deserves

Much like Oldman’s Dead Fish but by god i will crawl over broken glass to see it!

never got to see either of the Let the right one(s) in, but by all acounts Alfredson knows whats hes doing- im just trying to track some footage of him talking about this or a film, or film in general- if you find any do please post
