Tom Hardy is one of the biggest breakout stars of 2010, having co-starred in Christopher Nolan’s Inception and been cast as an unknown major player (perhaps Hugo Strange?) in the upcoming Batman threequel, The Dark Knight Rises.
One of the more interesting things about the Hardy, acting-wise, is that he seems to have no issue drastically altering his appearance for the purposes of any particular role. In Bronson, he gained weight, shaved his head, and grew a mustache that Burt Reynolds would envy. Now, in photos from the set of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, Hardy appears to be sporting tattoos and a hairstyle that I endearingly refer to as “The Andy Samberg.”
Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy is directed by Swedish filmmaker Tomas Alfredson, the man who brought us possibly the best, scariest vampire movie of the past few years, Let the Right One In, and has a top-notch cast including Gary Oldman, Ciaran Hinds, Jared Harris, Colin Firth, Benedict Cumberbatch, Mark Strong, and Svetlana Khodchenko.
Based on the British spy novel of the same name by John le Carré and set in the Cold War of the 1970s, the story sees Oldman’s character, a retired MI6 agent named George Smiley, called out of retirement when a high-ranking Secret Service agent is suspected of being a Soviet mole. Typical Soviets!
Due to the source material and the directing and acting talent involved, this is easily one of my most highly anticipated movies of 2011. From what little can be gleamed from the Istanbul set photos below, the movie looks highly atmospheric. (Check out that rain! And the cobblestone street! Be still my heart.) Additionally, I’d basically watch anything and everything with Gary Oldman in it, but especially something that sees him playing an ex-MI6 agent come out of retirement.

For those who don’t see the Andy Samberg resemblance, I submit the following:
It’s not so much that the haircut itself resembles Samberg’s; rather, the long hair makes Hardy look quite a bit like Samberg. Yes? No? Maybe so? Ah, well.
Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy is filming now and is expected to hit theaters September 16th, 2011. One wanders how much Tom Hardy will change up his look for The Dark Knight Rises – then again, I suppose that depends entirely upon who he’ll be playing.
