If you read the title to this post and thought, “Awesome! The dude who made Wanted is making a new superhero movie!” you were only half right. Black Lightning is sort of a superhero movie, but it has nothing to do with the famous DC character of the same name. Also, Timur Bekmambetov isn’t directing it (Alexandr Voitinsky and Dmitriy Kiselev are.) He’s just producing it, so I guess you’d only be one-third right.
Anyway, I should probably move on to what Black Lightning is about. From what I can tell by watching the Russian-language trailer (below), Black Lightning basically borrows the plot of the first Spider-Man film with a little bit of Transformers thrown in for good measure. Let me clarify. Remember how Peter Parker/Sam Witwicky wanted to get a cool car to impress Mary Jane/Whatever Megan Fox’s character’s name was? Black Lightning works with the same concept, except that instead of the boy becoming super powered, his car, a Soviet-era Volga, does. Check it out for yourself.

Even though I didn’t understand a single word in that trailer, I still kind of want to see this movie. The action looks pretty good and seems to have a lot of Bekmambetov’s flair. According to /Film, the budget for Black Lightning was a meager $8 million, making the special effects that much more impressive.
What do you think? Would you see this movie, or are flying cars played out (Chitty Chitty Bang Bang pretty much set the standard 41 years ago)?

I love that the Logo seems to be parodying the Logo for Pixar’s Cars.
Otherwise though… I may grab a copy when (if) it’s released here.

not interested to say the least..or about as interesting as the Underdog movie
I said it before and I’ll say it again…disappointing
The story is pretty much Spider Man with a car instead of superpowers…A young “geeky” guy, has a thing for a girl, gets superpowers (in the form of a car), bad guys kill his dad, now he fights crime, a new villain emerges. That’s as generic as it gets.
I’m glad it’s made for only $8 million but it doesn’t change the fact that the action scenes look like a CGI mess.
And being Russian, I’m really sad that Timur made such an Americanized movie. If the actors spoke English, this would be an American movie. Gone is all the Russian folklore mystique that he had in Nightwatch/Daywatch. Now it’s a rehashed Hollywood superhero plot.
Don’t mean to be a downer, but Timur needs to apply his talents better.

Actually, Americans can learn a thing or two from this movie. Timur stretched the 8 million budget and made the move look like something that would cost 50-100 million USD here in the states.
i don’t know russians can make a good movie…with a little help with americans though..hahaha
Trust me, you don’t need to understand the dialogue in this movie. If you’ve seen two Hollywood blockbusters you’ll be able to figure it all out by yourself.
There’s derivative, there’s cliche and there’s full blown plagiarism. Add to it ethnic stereotyping, and that’s what the trailer looks like.
martin, Russians can do very good films, but not when they’re copying the worst of Hollywood.
Another thing that bugs me is that situations like this just don’t happen in Russia!
It’s simply an American cliche…a student is trying to get a girl and he wants a cool car to get her. It’s just silly in the context of Russian culture.

This had a “Jumper” feel to it around the start for me… just before he gets the car… i think mainly since the main actor looks like hayden a bit.
