Filmmakers Bobby and Peter Farrelly has worked well over a decade to realize their dream project: The Three Stooges, a modernized adaptation of the classic comedy series that revolves around dim-witted siblings Moe, Larry, and Curly. In 2012, the world will at last get to see the Dumb and Dumber filmmakers’ “vision,” with actors Chris Diamantopoulos (American Dad!), Sean Hayes (Will & Grace), and Will Sasso (MADtv) bringing the trio to life.

An official trailer for the Farellys’ Three Stooges movie has been unveiled – and true to the brothers’ word, it features all the non-stop slapstick physical comedy gags and cartoony sound effects that the Stooges are famous for.

Here is a semi-official plot synopsis for the Farrellys’ Three Stooges:

The film will follow Larry (Hayes), Moe (Diamantopoulos) and Curly (Sasso) as they try to save their childhood home, but accidentally become involved in a murder plot and in a modern-day twist will end up starring in a reality TV show.

Now check out the official Three Stooges teaser trailer below (Courtesy of iTunes):

Most everyone is familiar with the Farrellys for their raunchy, adults-only brand of comedy (recent examples include Hall Pass and The Heartbreak Kid). However, The Three Stooges looks to be one of their rare semi-family-friendly offerings (outside of Osmosis Jones). That is, assuming that most parents will be okay with their kids watching grown men hit each other with hammers, ogle sexy nuns in kinky swimwear, have their genitals attacked by an angry lobster, and interact with the cast of Jersey Shore.

There’s good reason to wonder just how successful the Farrellys’ iteration of The Three Stooges is going to be at the box office; a lot of moviegoers might simply find the film’s brand of physical comedy and old-fashioned humor to be (for lack of a better description) too outdated for their tastes.

Judging by this early Three Stooges footage, it’s probably not going to help that the comedic set pieces and gags in the film don’t seem to be all that inspired or effective. Obviously, that might not prove to be the case in the actual movie, but the Farrellys’ weak track record in recent years doesn’t bode well in that regard…

The Three Stooges is slated for theatrical release in the U.S. on April 13th, 2012.

  1. No, no, NO!

  2. Sofia Vergara is so voluptuous and sexy. She’s a very talented actress. She’ll be wonderful in the film.

  3. looks kinda funny

  4. Hahah that looked so pathetic..

  5. Yes yes yes! Who cares what others think, to me this is hilarious, I mean they may not be the real Three Stooges, but they sure do a heck of a job standing in. Sure the film is set in the modern era, and sure there is Snooki and a nun in a bikini (wolf whistle), but from what I saw of the slapstick and the guys acting wise, they have got the Stooges down. If anyone needs further proof that modern actors can portray these comic legends, then find Mel Gibson’s made for tv movie on the lives of the Three Stooges. I say who cares what they naysayers think, come April 13th, I am seeing this film.

  6. ……..

I’m usually pretty open minded about this stuff, but… WHY????

I will say that the actors are pretty spot on with the voices and physical comedy. But the Stooges in a modern day context? How is that going to work? The gift gag with Snooki made me laugh for some reason though.

  7. Ahhhhhhh! I can never get the itunes trailers to work! Arrrrgh! Hope it’s actually a worthwhile movie!

    • Sorry about that – iTunes has the exclusive for now, but we’ll upload the trailer to SR later.

      • lol it’s all good, thanks :D

  8. It made me laugh because it’s so classic, and lets face it folks…Snooki is dumb enough to fall for one of the oldest Stooge gags out there. But that thing with the lobster, oh man that had me dying. And I’m all for this film, even if the Stooges are set in modern times. The chance to see my three favorite knuckleheads in some form or another back on the big silver screen brings a smile to my face.

  9. Apple, not Apply. doh.

  10. Wow. This proves Snooki isn’t just putting on an act for the cameras on jersey shore. Cuz she can’t act. How is it possible to unconvincingly say the lines “really?” And “owww!”?? Whatever. I like the stooges and think the casting of these guys was pretty good. But wont see this. Refuse to put money in that Snooki thing’s pocket

  11. Dear Farrelly Brothers,

You peaked at Dumb and Dumber. Give up, PLEASE!

  12. Looks awful. There isn’t one thing on that trailer that appeals to me, least of all that girl from jersey shore

  13. This looks just awful haaaa. Sofia on the other hand mmmmmmmmmmmmm. Will have a few laughs but that’s about it. One time watch then it will be forgotten.

  14. I’ll stick to the original brand…

  15. This looks Farrelly funny…get it…Farrelly, fairly. Anywho, I’m usually against remakes but it looks as if the actors can pull off a modern day Stooges. It reminds me of the Brady Bunch movie…when it came out I screamed WHY?!?! When I finally watched it, I laughed hysterically. I’m excited to get this in Netflix. I may splurge and get it OnDemand…but it isn’t theater worthy.

    • BOOOOO, GET OFF THE STAGE!!! many tomatoes for that one haaa

  16. Flip! They banged that out quick. It only seemed like a couple of weeks ago they were still casting it.

    • thats exactly what i was thinking…

  17. I was really trying to be open minded… and then the lobster-in-the-pants gag came

  18. Maybe it’s because I had such low expectations before, but this didn’t look too bad. I personally think The 3 Stooges are classically and forever funny – minus the 2 insults to the name Joe (I didn’t mind Shemp). I’ll probably take my Dad to this; I get my humor from him and The 3 Stooges – which are pretty much the same thing. I’ll try to subdue my preconceptions about this movie.

  19. The movie looks STUPID FUNNY. Im not gonna take this seriously, but I will watch it just for dumb laughs.

My guess as to why the stooges seem behind modern times in the movie… I think they were raised in a orphanage far far away from civilization which leaves them ignorant to the technology and way of life in present day…

  20. Oh jeez. With this cameo, does this mean we have to include “film actress” into Snooki’s resume? Gee whiz.

  21. soooo looking forward to this! BAHAHAHA!!!!!! :D

  22. Thanks for continuing to murder my childhood.

    • Your childhood is still there. If it can’t withstand a movie you don’t like, I’m pretty sure you have deeper issues.

  23. Well I found the trailer funny as hell. I’m in.

  24. I am a longtime Stooges fan…for more than 50 years.
Surprisingly enough, I think the Farelly Bros have actually pulled it off, if the trailer is any indication.
I’ll look forward to seeing this.
If the film sustains the energy of the trailer, it will be a fitting homage to the original 3.

  25. I liked it. Pretty spot on impersonations. Being in color somehow detracts from it a bit but all in all pretty cool. Could have done without Snooki though.
