First Look at ‘The Three Stooges’

Published 3 years ago by , Updated February 15th, 2014 at 8:46 pm,

It’s been a long time coming, but the Farrelly Brothers are finally filming their passion project, a big-screen version of The Three Stooges. Now, thanks to some behind the scenes photos, we have our first look at the new take on everyone’s favorite eye-poking trio.

As Moe, Larry, and Curly, veteran TV actors Chris Diamantopoulos, Sean Hayes, and Will Sasso have huge shoes to fill. Besides having to nail the comedy team’s legendary slapstick humor and perfect comedic timing, the three actors also have to nail the look of the Stooges (from Moe’s bowl cut to Larry’s curly afro). So are they getting it right? Why not judge for yourself.

While the actors were filming a car crash scene in Stone Mountain Park in Atlanta, a fan photographer snapped a few photos of the cast and crew between takes. Check out the first images, courtesy of On Location Vacations (via Moviehole).

Sean Hayes as Larry First Look at The Three Stooges

Obviously, these images aren’t studio-approved promo shots, so it’s a little tough to see whether or not the three lead actors fit their real-life counterparts. Still, from some of the close-ups, it looks like the Farrelly brothers and their team have done a nice job. I’m particularly impressed at how much Chris Diamantopoulos looks like Moe, given that the real Moe was kind of an ugly dude.

As I’ve mentioned before, I’m not totally onboard with the Three Stooges movie. It’s nothing against the Farrelly brothers, it just seems like a really unusual project. Will three loosely related 30-minute segments (structured like old Stooges episodes) play out well as a feature film?

The Farrelly brothers haven’t made a really great comedy in a while. Could The Three Stooges be a return to form for the pair? It’s impossible to say for sure until we at least see a trailer, but that doesn’t mean we can’t start the debate here. How do you think the actors look in their roles?

  1. Looks interesting……

  2. Looks great :D

  3. nice

  4. No it is not that impressive looking. I am a fan of the Stooges and the shots are not that flattering.

  5. Benicio Del Toro and Sean Penn, you are not…. This is going to have to be REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY…..(3 hours later) REALLY REALY funny, or it is going to fail MISERABLY!!!

Stick to your own comedy Farrelly’s! Make Dumb and Dumber 2 instead!

    • Dumb and Dumber 2…has already been done if recall correctly. Just sayin’ so don’t be hatin’.

      • dumb and dumberer was a prequel. Dumb and dumber 2 is being written right now

        • No…the second movie was released in 2003…Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd (2003)…this was the prequel to Dumb and Dumber. This according to IMDB. Don’t know WHAT is being made now.

          • I wish Dumb and Dumber 2 was being made Id see it in a heart beat. ONLY if jim carrey and Jeff Daniels returned ofcourse ;)

I dont consider “Dumb and Dumberer” a movie lol

          • Hanzo is correct, Barry Spears is not

            • DUMB AND DUMBER came out in 1994. See this:

              Anything else James?

              • Sigh. This is a lame discussion you two…

                • They are making the REAL dumb and Dumber 2 with Jim Carey and Jeff Daniels.
Yes Barry, we know Dumb and Dumberer existed. It was just a sorry excuse for a movie and is not counted by most people when thinking of a sequel to the classic 1994 movie :)

  6. Could be alot of fun and I’m curious as to how it’ll come off, but unless the trailors are fantastic enough tot draw a crowd, I think this will bomb… my kids (and one is 17) don’t even know who the 3 Stooges are.

    • greg thats a shame!

      • I know… can’t get them to watch anything black and white to save my life.

        • i have 24 dvds of stooges shorts only curleys cause shemp blew i have very early classics that were made for me by a person who will remain unknown somes were absolutely hysterical and some were filthy . could you roll barrels of beer down a hill called old panther piss i doubt it like the marx boys who were so filthy for the times what the stooges got away with was amazing and i never got poked in an eye cause unlike todays retards we 50 yrs ago knew or were told it was fake all time favorite episode is a tossup but i ‘ll have to go with the second time around with curley as a boxer and his go nuts was hearing pop goes the weasel later redone as moe, larry, cheeeese

    • I loved the old stooges shows. Most kids today have never seen them in action. i think there should be a 15 minute clip to show right before the new movie plays to let everyone get acquainted with the old sooges. Should be a fun movie!

    • You have failed as a parent.

  7. The Three Stooges cannot be recreated. Putting 3 guys in costumes to look like the Stooges in just an insult to the original Stooges.

  8. I don’t know they are doing this. Sorry, but I don’t.

    • Er, I don’t know why*

    • They are bringing them back for a new generation. DUH

      • Can they bring back a John Wayne, too, while they’re at it?

It just doesn’t work that way…

But whatever, they’ll find out quickly enough.

  9. This is just shameful. This is not an homage, it’s exploitation. The Stooges were not characters, but personae, and to rip off those personae is an insult to the Stooges.

    • Dude no one is making you watch the movie, im a stooge fan and im looking forward to this film. Dont speak for all stooge fans.

      • I didn’t speak for all Stooge fans. Never said I did. No need to get offended. Our opinions differ, is all. I got no problem with that.

  10. Good cast, i’m really looking forward to Will Sasso’s performance.

  11. The only thing this movie has going for it are the directors. This cast is horrible and the concept is dumb. Look, the Stooges were super talented and influential, no one can deny them that, but their brand of comedy is outdated. They’ve been copied and recopied and so many people have built off their humor, but by today’s standards? I don’t think even the original Stooges could draw a crowd, let alone these lame knock-offs.

  12. Personally, I am really iffy about this. While it looks like the Brothers may have gotten the costuming down for the Stooges (at least Moe and Larry) there would still have to be a whole lot of stuff brought forward to make it work. And yes it is true that the Stooges style of comedy is outdated, but you know what, I’m 18 years old and have been a fan of the Stooges since I was a little kid. Heck, I’m a fan of them all, Chaplin, the Marx Brothers, Red Skelton, Bob Hope, Milton Berle etc. I am willing to give this film the benefit of the doubt, if only to see that if it does work, the Stooges brought back into a much larger limelight. Now spread out!

  13. Though I still think this movie is a terrible idea, I think the Stooges’ brand of comedy is unique enough to merit revisiting… it’s not so much outdated as it is just unusual. It was unusual even back in their glory days. It was also an acquired taste of comedy. But I think it would still be appreciated in this day and age, just as Young Frankenstein showed how black and white cinema could still work.

But the thing that irks me is they’re trying to dress up three people and say they’re the same guys as the guys who made these roles famous. Why not create a NEW trio? Calling them the Three Stooges is fine, but don’t call them Moe, Larry, and Curly, don’t even go there. Moe, Larry, and Curly are dead, RIP.

  14. It should have been Cedric the entertainer as Curly, Sinbad as Larry, and Mo’nique as Moe….

    • No.

  15. The Stooges comedy is far from out of date and out of style. They are just as hilarious today as they were back in the day. Its a far cry from the trash and garbage we are spoon fed today as comedy. With the cussing and swearing and character assassinations it’s not even worth paying to see. The Stooges and other great comedy acts of days gone by presented a pure form of comedy that was truly funny because it exposed the fallacy of the human condition to a Tee. As for the movie, I wait with skepticism as these new actors are raised and bread on the new way of comedy and doing things the new Hollywood way as opposed to being naturals at pure comedy and good acting.

  16. it’s gonna suck…could have been great…

  17. Yahoo movies used a piece of this article in theirs. Cool I suppose even though Yahoo is not good. But I am very ehh about this movie.

  18. This looks so lame. I will not go see this. Why would I pay to see this when I can watch the real thing? The Stooges were comedy geniuses. These people could Never play them, let alone come even close to being one fraction as funy as them.

  19. why dont they make a movie about thier lives and how hollywood scred them over. i would see that. when i saw this site thats what i thought they where doing. to me there can never be another 3 stoogers team. when i think how curly was criple by a stroke and replace by that hack shemp leaves me feeling sick.

    • as far as shemp being a hack ..well he was the one of the original stooges and got sick so curly his brother filled his spot and when curly eventually got sick..mostly due to the strain on his health from playing “curly”. shemp returned to fill in. shemp was different but he was great!

      • correction: as I think about it I believe shemp originally left to pursue more serious acting opportunities but then returned when curly left with health issues.aww what a good brother being there to keep the famuly act together!

  20. i thought it was a behind the scenes story of the actors, not a new stooges movie in character.

  21. I feel this is an affront to all Stooges Fans. The blatant insults to Catholisim tread where the originals never went [ The Nun in drag, the Nun in a bikini]. To all those who smugly say that their humor is outdated, have any of you seen Jerry Springer, or Maury, where the “I’m not the baby daddy” dance resembles Curly’s thrashings? I feel that the original Stooges were funny not because of their antics alone, but also of their supporting cast, the 1930′s street scenes, dialogue and politically incorrect treatment of Women and minorities. Who could forget the Black chef looking at the spinning clock in the kitchen and saying ” Dis house is sho goin crazy” God forbid the new film should portray anything like that. But then, Hollywood is only a mirror, and We in the modern age refuse to look.

  22. Everybody is going on about how they will not be the same as the original stooges but I don’t think its supposed to be the same..its supposed to be a “take” on the stooges.. a different version of them and we should enjoy seeing how they interpret the style and nuances and just keeping the legacy alive is what fans should focus and enjoy!! I think if you watch it with that in mind we will enjoy it..true maybe not as much as the real thing but still as a stooge flavored film!

  23. Ok who thinks John lovitz would’ve been the ultimate person to play “Larry”??

  24. The new Stooges movie is going to be a tribute to the REAL Stooges! And the Farelly brothers said they were going to stay true to who the Real Stooges were. Not only that, if the movie is a success, it will bring a whole new generation to love the Stooges. I can’t wait! And in case you didn’t know, the trailer is already out! And it is hilarious! The cast they chose is awesome! And I’m in love with them already!Even though there will never be another Moe, Larry, Curly, Shemp,Joe Besser or Curly Joe DeRita, there is no reason not to make a movie tribute to them! To be honest, I’ve never been to a Stooge convention in my life. Or to the museum. I long to go someday! When the movie comes out, it will give me a chance to be a part of something with the Stooges. I love them all dearly. I am going to wear one of my Curly shirts and if my Grandma lets me, I’m going to spittoon my hair like Moe! Well, we’ll just have to cross our fingers, put our faith in the directors and cast, and wait. I’m so excited, I’m literally going CRAZY!!!!!! Woo Woo Woo! Nyuk nyuk nyuk nyuk! For duty and humanity! Why, soitenly! I’m a victim of soicumstance! Watch your P’s and Q’s, and don’t forget to dot the eyes!

  25. By the way, the actors they chose to play the Stooges are VERY handsome men! And the REAl Stooges were VERY handsome as well! In and out of makeup!
