Chris Diamantopoulos Up for Role of Moe in ‘The Three Stooges’

The pieces are finally falling into place for the Farrely brothers long-gestating passion project, The Three Stooges. Recently, Sean Hayes (Will and Grace) signed on to the film to play Larry. Prior to that, we reported that Will Sasso ($#*! My Dad Says) was set to play Curly. Now, it looks like the Stooges may have found their leader.

According to Variety, the Farrely Brothers plan to add another TV actor to the film, asking Chris Diamantopoulos to join the cast as the perpetually disgruntled Moe. Diamantopoulos is best known for his role as Rob Weiss in Season Eight of the popular action series 24.

The Variety article states that Diamantopoulos screen-tested for the role and that an offer is expected, but that the deal isn’t in place yet. Assuming Diamantopoulos takes the role, The Three Stooges film can finally move forward after countless delays.

As previously reported, The Three Stooges will take a non-conventional narrative approach, consisting of three roughly 30-minute sections, similar to the Stooges’ original short films. Whether or not that’s something that modern movie audiences are interested in remains to be seen.

The Farrely brothers have faced many obstacles in their efforts to bring The Three Stooges to the big screen and have attracted quite a bit of attention to the project as a result. Actors as diverse as Sean Penn, Jim Carrey, and Paul Giamatti were allegedly interested in the film at various times, but passed for various reasons. Then there was the seemingly never-ending drama with MGM’s bankruptcy, which derailed a number of other films besides the Stooges.

At this point, I’m not sold on the idea that Hayes, Sasso, and Diamantopoulos are the right guys to turn this film into a must-see movie event, but perhaps I’m wrong. We can only wait and see what will happen, but in the meantime, what do you think of these three actors bringing the Stooges to life? Is this the kind of movie that you’d be interested in seeing, or has too much time passed for this project to be interesting?

  1. As much as I would possibly like to see this timeless comedy, but I am still iffy about the idea of modern actors trying to portray these legends. No one but the Stooges can play the Stooges, with the exception of Me Gibson’stv biopic on the Stooges.

  2. This concept sounds like crap. Why does every single show/movie/book/play from yesteryear have to be re/made into a movie?

Some things don’t even make sense, like 3 Stooges. Is there really a large audience to watch a movie about the 3 Stooges in modern times? If there is a 3 Stooges movie to be made, the 3 Stooges should be playing the parts. Since they are dead, leave it alone. This is just another attempt to sell tickets on the strength of the brand, regardless of the piss poor execution of a classic.

    • ALL YOU BLEEDING HEARTS. GIVE IT A REST.
IT’S JUST A MOVIE. AND PROBABLY DAMM FUNNY TOO!
IF YOU DON’T THINK YOU’LL LIKE IT. THEN DON’T WATCH IT.
BUT DON’T COMMENT ON SOMETHING YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT.
IF YOU WERN’T EVEN BORN YET, WHEN THE LAST STOOGE PASSED AWAY,
OR EVER SAW THEM LIVE, OR FIRST RUN, THEN SHUT-UP. THEY WERE GREAT.
THE BEST OF THE BEST, AND THEY WERE A SMALL GROUP. BUT IT’S JUST
A MOVIE. SOME WILL OBVIOUSLY LIKE IT, AND SOME WON’T, AND WON’T EVEN
GO TO SEE IT. BUT THEY WILL HAVE PLENTY OF COMMENTS, WHICH MEAN SQUAT..
IF THE MOVIE FAILS, IT WILL FAIL. IT WILL HAVE PLENTY OF COMPANY.
BUT EVERY ONE, AND EVERY THING DESERVES A CHANCE. YOU GOT YOUR CHANCE TO POST YOUR COMMENT, HOW INSIGNIFICANT IT IS. BUT YOU DID IT. SO LAY OFF..

  3. I can see Sasso as Curly, but the rest of the cast?? Not sold.

  4. I can’t wait for the marketing machine to start scattering its buck shot everywhere. I’ve already pre-ordered my Halloween costumes… along with giant mallets, wooden planks, bricks and ladders.

  5. Chris Diamantopoulos as Moe? You gotta be kidding me. Maybe Benicio del Toro, if he can play a funny role and because I think he could easily be made up to look like Moe ( he’s almost a dead ringer), but unless the makeup crew can really pull a rabbit out of the hat Chris will never work. Sorry Chris (please don’t take my honest opinion personal), you just don’t have the look.
