Thor: Ragnarok is the Longest Thor Film Yet

The official runtime for Thor: Ragnarok refutes former reports and confirms Taika Waititi's Marvel movie to be the longest Thor film yet. The God of Thunder, played by Chris Hemsworth, first joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film, Thor, and he returned to join the ranks of Earth's Mightiest Heroes in The Avengers. The superhero's second solo film arrived in Alan Taylor's Thor: The Dark World in 2013, and he returned again to his team of fellow heroes in Avengers: Age of Ultron. However, while Captain America (Chris Evans) and Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) went head to head in Captain America: Civil War, Thor was offworld.

Now, the God of Thunder will receive his third solo movie this fall, and trailers for Thor: Ragnarok tease a much different adventure for Hemsworth's hero - with director Waititi at the helm this time. The trailers have showcased a much more light-hearted Thor movie, though there will be plenty of epic action with the introduction of Goddess of Death, Hela (Cate Blanchett). Additionally, previous reports about the Thor: Ragnarok runtime indicated it would be the shortest Thor movie yet, but the official runtime indicates the opposite to be true.

According to the British Board of Film Classification website, Thor: Ragnarok will run 130 minutes, and 21 seconds - which translates to two hours and 10 minutes, and 21 seconds. Comparatively, Thor ran for one hour and 55 minutes, while Thor: The Dark World ran for one hour and 52 minutes. Still, Thor: Ragnarok isn't the longest movie in the MCU, as that honor belongs to Civil War, which ran for a total of two hours and 28 minutes - though Avengers: Infinity War may be poised to break that record as superheroes from all corners of the MCU gather to fight Thanos.

Previously, Waititi indicated the Thor: Ragnarok runtime would be between 90-100 minutes, which would have made it not only the shortest Thor movie, but the shortest movie in all three phases of the MCU. Instead, it will be one of the longer outings, which isn't too surprising considering what we know about the plot of the film. As we've seen in the trailers, Thor will battle Hela and lose - with the Goddess of Death destroying Mjolnir in the process - then get taken by Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) to Sakaar to fight in a gladiator battle for The Grandmaster (Jeff Goldblum), where he'll be reunited with former Avengers teammate the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo). Eventually, Thor will bring together a new team made up of himself, Hulk, Valkyrie, and his brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston) to take on Hela.

That's quite a bit of ground to cover in a Marvel movie, so the two hours and change runtime makes sense. While it remains to be seen if the movie uses its longer runtime effectively, early reactions to Thor: Ragnarok have been incredibly positive, indicating Waititi's Marvel film will be an incredibly fun third outing for the God of Thunder. Fans still need to wait a few weeks until Thor: Ragnarok opens in theaters, but now at least they know how long the movie will be - and can plan accordingly to stick around for those two Thor: Ragnarok post-credits scenes.
