Two years ago, Sega signed a deal with Marvel to develop games based on their superhero movies. Since then, we have seen the release of Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk and X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Out of the three games that accompanied the film releases, two were horrible (Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk) and one was average (X-Men Origins: Wolverine). Not surprisingly, Sega published two of the three games. I’ll let you figure out which ones they were. (cough – the crappy ones – cough).
With Iron Man 2, Captain America and Thor on the books for both Marvel and Sega, does that mean we, the audience, can look forward to more mediocre games from the fallen Sonic creator or is there a silver lining? Perhaps!
Two days ago, internal Sony documents leaked out on the internet (via Sega’s FTP site) and provided a bevy of information for any parties interested. From confidential meeting notes, plans on launching a PS2 emulator for the PS3, to the release date of their new motion sensing controller (March in Japan); everything seemed to be there. Buried deep within the document held one short, but interesting note.
“Thor
SCEA would like a look at the code soon.”
While that might now seem unimportant, the fact that SCEA (Sony Computer Entertainment of America) is requesting a look at the code means that they’re in the midst of development of the game. With the film not expected until 2011, this gives Sega all the time they would need to develop and test this game and should produce a higher quality game compared to their previous efforts. While 2 years might not sound like a lot of time, the production schedule for the first Iron Man game was listed at 18 months.
Still, I’m cautious with Sega now a-days as they have not had the track record for producing top quality titles. Add that to the rule that games based on movies are almost always horrible and it’s not boding well for Thor.
Still, I’ll give it a chance. Who doesn’t love hitting things with a hammer?
Look for the Thor, movie and game, in 2011.
(I would just like to note that I went this entire post without making any form of MC Hammer reference.)

You know, I just had a vision of me wielding a wii-mote like Mjolnir while speaking Asgardian. Might do it anyway, before the game comes out, in the high street, naked. Get in first you know? Cooler that way
These games never turn out well but I’ll give it a shot if they show some type of good gameplay.
Plus, I always get some early hints about the movie because the game usually comes out first.
As long as it doesn’t seem like i’m playing ” bugs bunny birthday blowout” i’m all game for this. Preferably for it to look like God of War… If possible that is.
this will be rushed just at the iron man game was – total crap – now if they follow some decent game play and design like the new batman game – then it just might work rabbit, it just might.
if sega are making the game then im say “can’t touch this!!”
(made one for you lol)
rocksteady should get the rights to this game, they did such an amaizing job on the batman arkham asylum game, they should just make all superhero games. lol
One of the Thor Power Ups – “Hammer Time”
@red skull
…and I thank you for the MC reference. The sad thing is that with Disney acquiring Marvel that gives Sega the ability to work with Disney as well. So, now only do we get horrible superhero games, but also horrible Disney games.
Looks like we’ll have to rely on “Ducktales” and “Chip & Dale’s Rescue Rangers” on the NES for our video game awesomeness.
well let us hope that DC entertainment will be smart and give there games rights to rocksteady so they can do us justice with a green lantern game, and make it just as good or if not better than the batman one.
why is it that x-men video games feature all of the x-men but any ther marvel superhero team video game never feature thor? why is there not enough exposure for thor in marvel’s video games?
@ michael,
Like Iron Man (who’s now one of Marvel’s poster boys), Thor will be mad famous when his movie debuts.
