A new image from Marvel’s upcoming movie adaptation of Stan Lee’s comic book Thor has emerged and offers an early look at the not-too-shabby main hall of Odin’s palace in the realm of Asgard.
The Thor movie centers around the titular mythological hero (played by Chris Hemsworth), whose arrogance and thoughtless actions begin a war within Asgard. Thor’s father, Odin (Anthony Hopkins) then decides that the boy needs the ultimate in time-outs and thus banishes him to Earth, to live amongst mortal humans.
It is on Earth that the golden-haired man with the big hammer falls in love in a young woman (Natalie Portman) and learns what it means to be a true hero – and he doesn’t even have to watch Disney’s Hercules to do it.
Prior to his exile on Earth, Thor spends his days living with his fellow Agardians, the likes of which include Odin’s wife Frigga (Rene Russo), the treacherous Loki (Tom Hiddleston), and the aptly named Fandral the Dashing (Josh Dallas) and Hogun the Grim (Tadanobu Asano). Judging by this first pic of the Hall of Asgard (which you can see below), it’s probably safe to say they all lead a fairly comfortable life style.
The set design on display here – the golden throne, the shimmering metallic walls – is undeniably impressive and nicely illustrates just what a high-profile project this flick really is. Director Kenneth Branagh has a knack for mixing drama and luxurious production values – see his adaptation of Hamlet for the proof – and Thor looks like it will be no exception.
Branaugh has spoken previously about how his intention is to draw a visually powerful distinction between the Earth setting and Asgard in the film. Based on the behind-the-scenes footage and character images (see below) from Thor that have been released up to this point, it seems as though he is posed to do just that.
Will these sleek costumes and shiny sets work in the film, which we now know will be converted to 3D in post-production? It seems best to hold off on passing judgement just yet, and to wait and see if Marvel unveils anything like a trailer or early footage during their appearance at this week’s San Deigo Comic-Con.
Thor arrives in 2D and 3D theaters in the U.S. on May 6th, 2011.
