Thor movie First Look At The Hall of Asgard In Thor

A new image from Marvel’s upcoming movie adaptation of Stan Lee’s comic book Thor has emerged and offers an early look at the not-too-shabby main hall of Odin’s palace in the realm of Asgard.

The Thor movie centers around the titular mythological hero (played by Chris Hemsworth), whose arrogance and thoughtless actions begin a war within Asgard.  Thor’s father, Odin (Anthony Hopkins) then decides that the boy needs the ultimate in time-outs and thus banishes him to Earth, to live amongst mortal humans.

It is on Earth that the golden-haired man with the big hammer falls in love in a young woman (Natalie Portman) and learns what it means to be a true hero – and he doesn’t even have to watch Disney’s Hercules to do it. icon wink First Look At The Hall of Asgard In Thor

Prior to his exile on Earth, Thor spends his days living with his fellow Agardians, the likes of which include Odin’s wife Frigga (Rene Russo), the treacherous Loki (Tom Hiddleston), and the aptly named Fandral the Dashing (Josh Dallas) and Hogun the Grim (Tadanobu Asano).  Judging by this first pic of the Hall of Asgard (which you can see below), it’s probably safe to say they all lead a fairly comfortable life style.

The set design on display here – the golden throne, the shimmering metallic walls – is undeniably impressive and nicely illustrates just what a high-profile project this flick really is.  Director Kenneth Branagh has a knack for mixing drama and luxurious production values – see his adaptation of Hamlet for the proof – and Thor looks like it will be no exception.

Branaugh has spoken previously about how his intention is to draw a visually powerful distinction between the Earth setting and Asgard in the film.  Based on the behind-the-scenes footage and character images (see below) from Thor that have been released up to this point, it seems as though he is posed to do just that.

Will these sleek costumes and shiny sets work in the film, which we now know will be converted to 3D in post-production?  It seems best to hold off on passing judgement just yet, and to wait and see if Marvel unveils anything like a trailer or early footage during their appearance at this week’s San Deigo Comic-Con.

Thor arrives in 2D and 3D theaters in the U.S. on May 6th, 2011.

Meanwhile, keep checking in this week as we report on all the HUGE announcements and surprises from the 2010 Comic-Con.  Stay tuned to the Screen Rant Official Comic-Con 2010 Page and follow us on Twitter (@screenrant) for the latest.

  1. Is that the Horned Helmet I see on Loki???

    • Yep!!! actually looks well!

    • YES IT IS!

    • Good eye! Didn’t even spot that! ^_^

  2. It looks similar to the throne room in Masters of the Universe movie from the 80′s.

    • Same thing I thought! But I was glad to see Loki had his helmet.

  3. Looks way better than the last shot, a real genuine set too!!!

  4. I don’t know, the costumes still doesn’t look awesome to me,
    it’s too modern

  5. WOW!!!!! the set looks amazing. Everyones costumes look great imo. I just wished Thor had more chainmail. Digging Loki’s horns and I can see Odin has on his helmet also. Nothing but excitement for this film

  6. Loki and Fandral look Badass!!! Looks like Thor is holding his helmet in one hand and Mjolnir in the other. I can see Volstagg’s leg in the corner, next to Fandral,it seem to be there wasn’t enough room to catch his fat arse in the photo too.

  7. In the end, the story will trump all. I have faith in Branaugh to tell a great story on film (even if its no Shakespeare). His love for the story of Thor wit Marvels influence should bring us a great story, even if there ar some visual aspects that aren’t up to everyone’s specs. The Hall looks marvelous, so lets hope.

  8. Frigga is even hot from that angle! And I love Odin’s ravens perched up on the throne. And Odin is holding his Spear! Geek out! GEEK OUT!!

  9. looks awsome no 3D for me though im afraid clash of the titans ruined that for me forever just cant risk seeing a movie like that again.

  10. OMG!!!!!! loki has his horns!!!!!!!!! Holy crap!!!!! It looks awesome!!! Im taking my wife and son to see this!!!!

  11. So Loki, Odin, and Thor have a helmet after all. SWEET.

  12. If this page gets updated, use the picture from the new issue of Entertainment Weekly. It’s got a pic of Thor and Odin that looks pretty cool.

  13. I don’t see why people are mad about the costumes looking futuristic. Branaugh is basing the movie off of jack kirby’s original Thor where the asgards are seen as more futuristic than medieval. Go look up a picture of kirbys Odin and it looks very similar to the the way Odin looks in the movie. So are people really getting pissed that a director actually has a passion for the material and is actually sticking close to the source material more than other comic book movies nowadays?

    • Agreed. People are too hung up on the original Viking mythology I guess, but that was probably to be expected.

Branaugh is doing this movie the way Stan Lee and Jack Kirby visualized Thor and his brethren to look like – so get a grip, people. This movie will be fun.

  14. It looks brilliant. Much better than the so-so photograph of Odin that was released a few days ago. I never had any doubts that this film would be great, but the reading on my stokeometer just increased a little bit!

  15. I can’t believe that people are actually soiling themselves over one decent picture and one low res picture, and claiming how awesome it looks.

Come on,get real guys.Let’s wait for something more substantial before we start giving undue praise.

    • I’ve seen the high rez version and its awesome.

  16. So far , I’ve LOVED everything I’ve seen for this movie !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Thor looks AWESOME !!!!
    Mjolnir looks AMAZING !!!!!!
    Odin looks SPECTACULAR !!!!!

I just about lost my mind when I saw that they actually got the horns right on Loki’s helmet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have tremendous faith in Kenneth Branaugh’s vision for Thor and I am insanely excited to see this movie :)

  17. Anyone else notice that the throne as actually the Sword of Oden? Or it could be the Sword of Doom. And I dont think we will see Thors helmet anytime soon. I mean they are gonna give us a taste but they are not gonna give us the entire thing yet.

  18. @phil…………. You copied what I said 2 hours ago on this article LOL

  19. Ugh still not happy about the Costumes. The Hall looks good though. Loki looks ok, Odin looks awful and Thor looks good from the waste up and awful from the waste down.

  20. Love Anthony Hopkins! Just not sure if he can fit the bill, in regards to the physical stature of Odin The one thing that I can say is that he definitely has the chops to pull it off. I hope that kind of talent has the trickle effect. If its going to work it should be great, if not….WOW! Keeping my fingers crossed for this one.

  21. Release the Hounds…

  22. I want a pic of the rainbow bridge with Heimdall. Also one of a frost giant might be cool if they are going to have one.
