A Thor: Love and Thunder image teases the reunion of Chris Hemsworth's Thor and Natalie Portman's Jane Foster. The Taika Waititi-helmed sequel to 2017's Thor: Ragnarok will follow the God of Thunder after the events of Avengers: Endgame. Thor: Love and Thunder will star Tessa Thompson, Christian Bale, Russell Crowe, and Waititi himself alongside Hemsworth and Portman.
Following his battles with Thanos (Josh Brolin) alongside the Avengers, the new movie will see Thor embark on a journey of self-discovery. After joining the Guardians of the Galaxy, the Asgardian builds himself back up physically and emotionally after handing over the title of King to Valkyrie (Thompson). But when a new threat, Gorr (Bale), begins a campaign to slaughter the Gods, Thor will have to return to his heroic role. However, he will not be alone, as he is joined by an empowered Jane Foster, wielding the now-reforged Mjolnir, giving her the abilities to channel the same powers he possesses. Jane made her last appearance in 2013's Thor: The Dark World, with Thor: Ragnarok explaining that she and Thor had broken up.
As shared alongside a number of other images previewing 2022's summer theatrical releases by Fandango, a new photo focuses on Jane and Thor's reunion. In the image, they stand before one another against a purple backdrop. Both Thor and Jane are dressed in versions of their new armor, with each hero lacking their signature weapons or helmets, teasing a personal moment between the two. Check out the full image below.
Despite Portman's absence from the MCU, Waititi hoped to reintroduce Jane in the sequel, but in a way that showed growth from where the Thor franchise last left her character. The director explained that rather than have Jane be waiting for Thor's eventual return, he wanted her to have her own significant role in the adventure. Waititi has also teased how Jane's new role will impact Thor, suggesting that seeing her take on the title after all their time apart will shock and confuse the founding Avenger.
Thor: Love and Thunder's reunion between Jane and Thor is sure to be a heavily emotional moment between the two. While Jane's story since Thor: Ragnarok is currently unknown, Thor is a vastly different man compared to when they last saw each other, having experienced incredible losses and having to rebuild himself after Thanos' actions. While Waititi suggested a rekindled romance between Thor and Jane isn't guaranteed, perhaps their reunion can help Thor decide how he wants to live his new life as the pair face Gorr and his lethal mission.
