‘Thor’ Will Be Unleashed In IMAX 3D

We’re just over two week from the “official” start of the Summer 2011 Movie Season, which kicks off with Marvel’s new superhero flick, Thor. Early reviews of the film have begun to make their way online, and the consensus so far is pretty good, if nothing spectacular.

Marvel and IMAX Corporation have now secured a deal to release the God of Thunder’s solo cinematic outing in the IMAX 3D format – in addition to standard 2D and 3D. That’s a slight departure from Marvel’s last feature, Iron Man 2, which hit IMAX and regular screens in only two dimensions.

Here is an official statement on the deal from IMAX CEO Richard L. Gelfond:

“Bringing iconic characters to life is something that Marvel Entertainment and Paramount do very well, and we’re confident that Thor will also come to life on the IMAX screen. This highly-anticipated summer title is tailor-made for the IMAX audience.”

So here’s the important question (for all of us, that is): Which format should everyone go and see Thor in? Will it be worth the extra bucks to see Chris Hemsworth smash Frost Giants’ face with his trusty hammer Mjolnir on the really big screen in three dimensions? Or will the good old-fashioned regular 2D format suffice?

Here’s what we know (and “know”) about Thor so far:

  • Kenneth Branagh did not actually shoot the film using 3D technology. It was converted during post-production.
  • Early reviews peg Thor as featuring “non-gimmicky 3D” and say “the film’s many scenes ‘above’ will have you in awe – they’re just splendidly shot and scrumptiously staged…”
  • TV spots for Thor have done a good job of illustrating why Marvel chose to convert the film to 3D in the first place (financial motivation aside).

The verdict? I still have my doubts that seeing Thor in IMAX 3D will be that much more of an immersive and thrilling viewing experience than if you just go watch it in 2D. However, if you do decide to cough up the extra bucks for your local IMAX and/or 3D screening, it looks like you won’t feel cheated out of your money afterwards. So take that for what it’s worth.

Thor arrive in theaters next month on May 6th.

  1. Converted to 3D is not the equivalent of filmed in 3D.
Coverted to IMAX is not the equivalent of filmed in IMAX.

Converted to 3D and converted again to IMAX is only
a conversion of a ticket price adding 6 dollars in NY.

  2. How about in just plain IMAX 2D? Is that not an option?

    • I’d actually prefer that myself, Dan, but that option is sadly not available.

      • Wait, really? That sucks.. I had been planning to see it in IMAX 2d..

  3. 3D, 2D, 4D or 1D, it doesn’t matter to me, I’m seeing this movie opening night!

    • D-cups are to big. Anything bigger than a handful is….Oh, wait, what are we talking about? :-D

I’m with you, dude. This movie has my bucks; and if it’s as good as I’m hoping it is, they will have it a second time in the extra dimension.

  4. The effects look like crap anyway for this film and the costumes look terrible. I think the only reason I am even going to see this film is to see the new Green Lantern in all it’s glory on the big screen. I also want to see how the 3D conversion of GL will look like by seeing this Thor film in 3D. Otherwise, I would have zero interest in wanting to see this Thor movie in 3D at all. Oh well….

  5. The God who looks like Beavis….or is it Butthead?? LOL

  6. Well, I saw that coming.

  7. Full screen VHS,,,

    • They stopped making those my friend, it was a sad day…kinda

      • What??!! They don’t make VHS anymore??!! What has the world come to! Next thing you’ll tell me is they don’t make cassettes anymore! Geez!! :-D

  8. Im there. Dont care about the money. Dont care about the other trailers. Ive waited too long for this.

  9. My local movie theatre has actually been advertising Thor in IMAX 3D for at least a month now…

    • Heh, well the IMAX Corporation has made it “officially known” now, so… I guess it’s no longer a semi-secret. 8-)

  10. I’m hoping that my local theater has the 2D version because I absolutely HATE 3D. If they don’t, I’ll be waiting for this on Blu-Ray.

  11. I wear glasses so putting those damned 3D glasses over mine is both physically painful and makes looking through 2 sets of lenses somewhat distracting. I went to see Avatar twice in IMAX and endured the pain gladly because of the sheer beauty of the vistas but TRON Legacy felt like a waste of money to me.

So I will be seeing Thor on a traditional 2D screen.

Only if the creators are willing to fully commit to IMAX 3D and take advantage of the medium will I pay the IMAX price.

  12. When I hear “converted” the red flags pop up. Even if they took their time with it unless a movie is filmed using the proper 3D technology and cameras I will save my money and go 2D…

  13. Ahh Yes! What a delima to have..But alas negative comments from those whose obvious preferences are laid to bear. It ponders the question ‘Why comment in an area you dislike? Continue to wait for all the non-superpowerd character films. I’m sure Favure/Nolan will get another shot in the future. But to the multitude that have been waiting for the other door to open..and made correctly..YA-HOO!!!! Bring on the Celestials ,Thanos,Warlock, and the other myth Pantheons..HAPPY DAYS are upon us!

    • “‘Why comment in an area you dislike?”

Uh, because it is called screenRANT.

  14. I think I might go to the 2 version. I have enough reward points on my credit card to get two free tickets, but they don’t cover 3D anyway.

    2D it is then.

  15. I want to see Chris Hemsworth play Jesus. :)

  16. yeah i think i will see this in imax 3d for free :)

  17. Hollywood is corrupt! Why they kept advertising it in 3D or Imax 3D when its not even shot in 3D to begin with?? Bunch of money hungry idiots!

  18. I have an unlimited card to see as any movies as i want per month in the uk with cineworld for only £15/month, so I’m undecided to go for the free 2d or cough up £1.50 and go for the 3d experience on Monday 25th, anyways Been waiting for this for ages so I’m definitely going to watch it on opening night.

P.s going now to watch fast and furious today 21st April hope its good enjoyed all previous versions apart from the last one which was a bit muddled.

    • Something wrong with my m button any is supposed to be many

  19. ive seen this in 3d dont do it go for it in 2d is the way to go
    for this move

    • You saw the movie already? Is it as good as the reviews are saying?

      • yes its good but the 3d is crap

  20. When I attended the Marvel panel at last summer’s Comic Con, they showed us the Thor trailer in 3D and it looked great. It may be worth it. I actually know one of the production assistants and he said it looked great in 3D.

    • It’s releasing in the UK This Monday so I’m still not sure on whether to go to the 2D screen or the 3D screen. They have about the same amount of showings so no problem with timing. Since I’m a comic book fan I don’t mind dishing out an extra few pounds, all I care about is the story and hope that the movie stays true to the comics.

  21. The 3D on THOR is another conversion hack job, ala Last Airbender. It’s barely 3D. It’s 2 1/2D at best.

  22. Just got back from seeing it in Australia. Film was great. The 3D was rubbish. Absolute rubbish. Even with the glasses, the images are blurred, flat like cardboard, and take away from the film. Like all 3D done in post, it’s a waste of effort. Please let this craze soon be over and get back to normal good resolution 2D and let our imaginations take care of the rest.

If you want to see the film at its best, see it in 2D.

    • Thanks for the review. To bad about the 3D; I’m still waiting on that holo-deck thingy. :-)

BEST quote I’ve read all week! Cheers!
    :)

  24. I think the 3D is lost with the fast action, and when you are waiting for the great 3D to happen to miss out on the rest of the movie

  25. The idiots at my movie theater only have Thor in 3D, so I’ll be watching it in it but I’m not happy about it…

  26. It’s been released in Australia and I saw it last night in 3D. Good movie but would be much better in 2D. You would still get the nice visulas of Asgard but it wouldnt be so disorientating in the battle scenes. If your lucky enough to have a movie theatre near you showing it in 2D, I would go watch that instead of the 3D version

    • Cheers for saying that :)

  27. Thor is releasing at my local cinema today and I’m still not sure whether to see it in Real 3D or 2D. 2D has 4 showing and 3D 6 so…. The only difference is price which is a measly £1.50 for the 3d and i get the 2d for free… Someone whos seen it in 3d give me some advice

  28. john unless you want to wake up one day to find that every film is in RealD 3D, I would hold out for the 2D screening and tell your friends!

  29. Agree 3D not brilliant, 2D far better. Saw Thor this week in both! Entertaining.
