Thor Details: Trailer Info, Cameos & Other Characters
Mar 13, 2010 by Rob KeyesIn this Thor news update, we talk about the Thor trailer premiere, character changes, cameos and the villainous Loki, played by Tom Hiddleston.

Earlier in the week we reported on a pile of new details regarding the production, timeline information, characters and costumes for Thor, the highly anticipated origin film of the next Marvel Avenger to hit the big screen.
We also discussed the major question of how Thor will join The Avengers. This information came from the first of a three-part series of scoops from our friends at Latino Review and since then, parts two and three have gone up.
In this Thor news update, we go through the latest information revealed about the movie including which characters will or will not make an appearance, some significant character/actor changes and when we’ll see the first Thor trailer.
The Thor Teaser Trailer
I think many, including myself, are more excited about the first full trailer for Thor than we are about many full-length films coming out this year. While we haven’t yet seen a single still, set photo or behind-the-scenes clip from the production of Thor, we now know to be true what we’ve expected about the first trailer for the film in that it will likely premiere at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con in July.
Just like last year with the epic premiere of the Iron Man 2 trailer (albeit unfinished) last summer, we can expect a full panel presentation for the movie with director Kenneth Branagh and some key cast members. What a moment it will be when they unveil footage for Thor – Don’t worry, Screen Rant will be there hours and hours in line to make sure we can report on this event for you.
Thor Cameos
We’ve known for a while that Marvel Comics legend Stan Lee will continue his tradition of having small special appearances in many Marvel films and we know he does so again with Thor, but what about the major players from the other Marvel Studios character movies?
It’s confirmed that Agent Coulson from S.H.I.E.L.D. who appeared in Iron Man, will have a part in Thor to recruit the Asgardian Avenger, but what about Nick Fury, Tony Stark and others?
According to Latino Review’s insider, neither characters played by Samuel L. Jackson or Robert Downey Jr. were written into the original script. However, as we know with these projects and as we saw with The Incredible Hulk, that can very much change and we can certainly expect to see at least some kind of special cameo appearance.
I’m still hoping to see Marvel take advantage of the cross-marketing potential of their shared Marvel movie universe to include a scene with other important characters and I’m still holding hope to see the introduction of a character like Hawkeye in one of these films.
Character Changes
The day before Thor was scheduled to being production, Stuart Townsend was replaced by actor Joshua Dallas. Townsend was set to play Fandral the Dashing, one of The Warriors Three who are allies and friends of Thor but due to the cliched “creative differences” Dallas now has the role. Strangely enough (or I suppose not so strange now) this same thing occurred with Townsend when he was to play Aragorn in the the Lord of the Rings trilogy – how things could have been oh so different.
Latino Review’s latest reports shed some light on what truly happened here and it certainly doesn’t look good on Townsend’s part.
“It appears he wasn’t happy with the limited screen-time of his character Fandral. There was friction with him from the very beginning as far back as his screen test which he basically blew off. He wasn’t the first choice of either Marvel or the film’s producers to begin with, but when they brought him in they liked him. They thought he did a good job. It looks like the fact that his character doesn’t have a pivotal role in the movie made him sort of slack off and say, “Well, f**k this movie. I’m not the lead, so who f*cking cares?” They say he had a similar attitude when he made The Lord of the Rings ten years ago and look how that turned out. They replaced him with Viggo Mortensen and the rest is history. He failed to realize the movie is not called Fandral, it’s called Thor. The movie’s not about him. Its surprising, because he was one of the longest working actors on the project yet he still acts like a diva. There was an incident where he had a costume test and blew that off. The studio had people working under deadlines fly in to meet him and he showed up six hours late. When they complained, his response was something like “Oh, well could we just do it now?” Talk about arrogance. Townsend’s been replaced by another actor named Joshua Dallas and he’s just come from doing Red Tails near San Francisco where the rumors of George Lucas directing re-shoots on the film are not rumors, they’re true.”
Who’d want to work with this guy?
Continue to Part 2: The Character and Origins of Loki…
Around the web:

I can't wait to see the first images from this film. Just knowing Kenneth Branagh is running the show really makes me excited. I think he was a good choice for this superhero.
I'll also say I was glad to hear about Townsend's departure from the film. I don't think I've seen him in anything that impressed me, and he seemed an odd choice for Fandral.
This is good news. I can't wait to see Loki in action!
Townsend was let go from “Lord of the Rings” because he looked too young to play Aragorn…this is confirmed by Peter Jackson in multiple interviews (including Director's commentary on the films). That makes your source's information questionable in its entirety. Then again…Latino Review is not necessarily known for journalistic integrity.
Yes, that is what the DVD features but you should look deeper into this. That's called being media trained and if there was problems with Townsend and the LOTR folks they certainly wouldn't have said so in interviews promoting the film. That's taking things at face value.
There was “Creative differences” on that project as well – it wasn't simply only because of his age, something they could have acted on for months prior.

btw, we still don't know what villains we'll see outside of Loki, do we?
Why wouldn't they have said so in interviews? Being media trained would involve restating the “creative differences” mantra, not giving additional insight.
When you quote anonymous sources the way so many people do, any accountability goes right out the window. So if a source tells me that Tom Hanks poisons the milk of school children and I publish it on a website, it literally gives me the freedom to say whatever I want without any recourse and there is zero testing on the validity of my sources. You also have a small faction of readers that will believe it. Buy hey, if “sources say” it, it must be true, right? That damn Tom Hanks.
Townsend's age was an issue but they chose him and started the film regardless – once they started the other issues became too much.
I don't know what you're referring to exactly but Latino Review broke every casting announcement for Conan. Does that mean they made that up? IESB broke the news that Spider-Man 4 was falling apart months before it happened – many (like you're doing now) completely denied that possibility and look what happened…
It sounds like your issue is with how world media works and how secretive information must keep the sources anonymous at times.
As for accountability, if we report something from our own source that's false, and then do it again – our reputation goes completely out the window. This is why we say rumors are rumors when they are and hold back on a lot of reports until we are at least able to verify something on our own.
Joe Gatt is playing a villain although it's not confirmed which one yet:

Sorry, but the only thing I know about Stuart Townsend is Queen of the Damned and oh gods! what a way to kill a franchise…anyways, thx for the Thor update. I am also shocked at the lack of press pictures surrounding this flick. (esp. Ray Stevenson's part).
You can't believe everything you read on the internet, just because it's on here doesn't mean it's truth. However, I, for the most part, rely on the integrity of this site for my news.
right, thanx for the reminder. but, as you say, which one is not confirmed.
if i recall, someone said he was chosen for one of those asgard guys…ares, surge, can't remember.
the truth in the matter is that i have always been pulling for crusher creel, which this guy could do.
in the beginning they kept saying that it would be mostly played in asgard.
but now they say it's getting spit up pretty good.
that again begs the question…absorbing man?
This gives be a big old Kool-Aid smile.
I'm unsure as to why you're referencing Conan or Spider-Man 4 when discussing the validity of sources. Latino Review or IESB wouldn't exist if they didn't get some of their news correct. Even a blind squirrel finds an acorn every now and then. Even a broken watch is right twice a day. Another lame statement about finally getting something right. However, even you have to admit to the high volume of conjecture offered from such places.
Note I never attributed this site to gossip journalism…I specifically cited who the issue was with. If you frequently got news wrong (as they do), I wouldn't be here, nor would I comment. I enjoy the site. You cite your sources when you report findings from other websites and your information is grammatically sound (something we Journalism grads appreciate). I don't enjoy theirs and stated as such. I'm going to buy you guys a “Jump to Conclusions Mat”. You see, it's a mat with different conclusions that you jump to.

PS – I also look forward to the teaser for Thor, but worry how they'll blend Nose Mythology with the world Iron Man established.
Your news is that someone else reported some news? How about going out and getting your own news please. Something we haven't already heard would be nice. Thanks.
I am getting the impression that the current and growing interest in the Thor movie is going well beyond Marvel Thors traditional comic fan base.
I base this in part on comments I have received as a Thor fan fiction writer on a variety of different sites:

I'm also an Australian science fiction writer:

I'm biting my tongue so hard, it's about to bleed!
It'll either be SKURGE “The Executioner” or “The Absorbing Man”. Both characters were manipulated by Loki to attack Thor although Skurge is more connected to The Enchantress.Looking at “The Absorbing Man”, I have to say that Gatt looks almost exactly like him(except for the ears). However there is also another actor named David Mattey who is cast in Thor who looks EXACTLY like Skurge. I Thor will have some serious issues with bald guys in this movie.
That's the reason for bringing in Stellan Skarsgard's character, he's a scientist and they will be taking a pseudo-science approach on how Thor exists with the “real” world. They can't just throw him in there and think that people will accept it. It will more than likely deal with inter/extra-dimensional exploration,Stonehenge,Runes,sub-atomic particles,(maybe even Pym particles) and crossing over to the other side of sub-atomic energy(beyond quarks, biaps etc.) Maybe even dealing with Micro-verses,parallel dimensions and stuff.
ulik
haha yeah bald guys make good villains now that i think back to different characters and there looks to be many in Thor and The Avengers.
When you think of Thor, think of “DR.Who” and his world based on science. Thor's magic or Loki's magic on earth would probably be explained as a mastery of “Alchemy” not magic.
Good call. He could be one or the other although I initially guessed Skurge
lol, do you have the script?
“…how things could of been oh so different.”
Another classic Rob Keyes piece of writing.
In The Incredible Hulk movie…the scene where he is shielding Betty Ross from the Thunder..I heard someone mention that that may have been a link to Thor somehow! We had a connection to Capt America and Iron Man in that movie – was this the link to Thor ? Looking soooo forward to all these movies and the hints about The Avengers! Great fun ! Feel I was a kid again !
“too young” doesn't always mean in appearance.
As for LR, you bring up some valid points… have you discussed it with them? On their board?
I appreciate Robs passion for movies and comic book movies so keep it coming Rob.
Kiefer Sutherland can make an awesone hero playing THOR
That's interesting…
The link was said to be the lightning storm that took place when Hulk was fighting the army at Culver University. First, it was bright and sunny, with no clouds in the sky, then all of a sudden lightning shoots forth and rain follows suit to put out the fire that came about when Hulk destroyed the chopper. Hulk holds betty in his arms amidst the fire.
When he brings betty up into the hills to shield her from the rain, lightning strikes the Hulk on his back, and he picks up a boulder and throws it into the air (at whoever shot the bolt of lightning at him), cleary looking for the next challenger as his (Hulk's) fighting stance shows, while protecting Betty with is huge outstretched hand.
What many do not know about the Hulk is that he is able to see ghosts and tears in the astral plane. Why is this important? because if Thor was trying to egg Ol' Greenskin on, Hulk was able to see him, while others could not. Hence Hulk knew just where to throw the boulder and, as stated before, was ready to fight this new challenger.
Finally the news reporter reported the fight on Culver grounds and made reference to the “powerful lightstorms,” as she said. END SCENE
I don't know. I think the director would have made it more obvious. Aparrently you are quite familiar with the Hulk, but the general public isn't. However, that is still cool……
