There’s been a lot of rumor and speculation about which actors would be playing the famous “Warriors Three” in Kenneth Branagh’s upcoming adaptation of Marvel Comic’s Thor. Names ranging from Dominic Cooper to Robert De Niro and Jude Law were once thought to be hovering over the roles of Thor’s buddies in battle, and in the last few hours there’s been rumored word that actors Stuart Townsend (Queen of the Damned), Ray Stevenson (Punisher: War Zone)  and Tadanobu Asano (The Blind Swordsman: Zatoichi) were going to be playing the trio.

Now we have word direct from Marvel News confirming that indeed, Townsend, Stevenson and Asano are the official picks to play The Warriors Three. So who will be playing whom? Keep reading to find out…

Here’s the breakdown:

The Warriors Three (see header pic above) consist of (clockwise L-R) Fandral, Valstagg and Hogun. Fandral will be played by Townsend, Volstagg by Stevenson and Hogun by Asano. Here’s a quick look at the three actors:

Townsend, Stevenson and Asano.

I know they have to get Stevenson in the big, burly, bearded makeup of Volstagg before he’ll totally ‘look the part,’ but as far as the casting: I think that once again Thor has hit the mark.

So individually it seems like we’ve got some good matches – but how will the three actors gel together onscreen? The Warriors Three are both pretty comical in their banter AND kick-ass in battle – with the exception of Volstagg, who was something of a coward, usually stumbling into victory on luck. Of course, the film could go with the more modern version of Volstagg, who is much more fearless. We’ll see.

So there you have it, The Warriors Three. I for one am good with this.

Townsend, Stevenson and Asano join a cast that includes Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Natalie Portman as the human love interest, Jane Foster, Anthony Hopkins as Thor’s father, Odin, Stellan Skarsgård, Colm Feore, Jamie Alexander as Asgardian warrior/love interest Sif and Tom Hiddleston as Thor’s half-brother/nemesis, Loki.

Sweet cast, sweet director (Branagh) and what is sure to be a sweet script. On my list of upcoming Marvel movies, Thor just keeps on climbing toward top. I can’t wait for the first trailer to bring the thunder…

What do you think about the actors cast as The Warriors Three? Is Thor looking better and better to you, or what?

Thor is slated to hit theaters on May 20, 2011 (not soon enough!)

  1. As much as I love most of the chosen cast, how much is going to be spent on Actor salaries that will take away from film production?!?!

  2. This is a good sign. I like when they cast actors that aren’t huge names. It’s starting to remind me of LOTR.

  3. Manowar

the only one getting a large salary for this movie is Anthony Hopkins possibly and he hasn’t even signed on yet. They are still in negotiations.

  4. Branagh continues the pre-streak of awesome with more great casting news.

    Thor FTW

  5. I dind’t know that asian people were once part of the viking society.

  6. Wow, Thor movies just keeps looking better and better with these casting choices. My hopes are high for this one!

Btw Bangarang, I think Hogun has been portraid for a long time as a kind of Mongul/Samurai warrior in the comics, so I can see why they would go with an asian actor.

  7. @ Bangarang

Apparently Viking Society also consisted of Trolls, Elves, Dwarves and Dragons… :)

If your a marvel Thor reader, you’d understand about the Asian(Mongolesque) casting.

  8. Great choices, IMO. The cast of THOR is shaping up to be otherworldly. 😀

  9. After reading this bit of awesome casting news … I’m definitely there for this movie!

    Thor is gonna be SWEET!
    So be it! :)

  10. RAY STEVENSON!! Bring it on Titus Pullo!! Woot, this is GREAT news! I hope they stick with Stevenson, he needs his big break.

  11. Hmmm, great choices, but I was pretty sure that Branagh would have taken the Fandrall role himself. I’m not too familiar with the character, but judging based solely on the picture in the header, and the fact that Branagh is one of the most versatile actors living today, I think he could have easily played him.

  12. Looking better all the time.

  13. Now that Ray Stevenson has been cast I’m going to see it!

  14. jeez anyone who’s in a punisher movie totally goes and does another marvel movie. Sup with that dude bra bro

  15. I didn’t bother watching Punisher: War Zone but I loved Ray Stevenson in the Rome series. I think he’s a better fit for Volstagg’s personality than Frank Castle, although he still seems a bit of an odd casting choice to me for that role.

But either way he can probably make it work and I’m definitely there on opening day.

  16. I love Ray Stevenson, but I am a little surprised by him being picked for Volstagg. Still, he’s a great actor, and overall, I’m getting more and more excited about “Thor.” I think this film has the chance to offer something unique to moviegoers. Keeping my fingers crossed.

  17. This film has an absolutely amazing cast, I am really excited abouted seeing it. This film will be something different, in a good way, that was clear from the moment Brannagh was announced as director.

SHould be something special. This is easily my most anticipated comic book movie after Iron Man 2. Spiderman and X men are dead to me until they get new casts.

  18. This movie has picked up steam fast and looks better and better with each announcement. cant wait!

  19. Well the question still stands whos going to play as Thor himself? I would personally choose Karl Urban or Triple H b/c they seem to have great potential for this role.

  20. Uh Jesse, they cast Thor ages ago!

  21. I think Cary Elwes would have been a better choice to play Fandral…

  22. One last thing, they better use th modern version of Volstagg instead of the “cowardly” version because we need to see Stevenson kicking major ass, not stumbling around…

  23. OMG they just cast Heimdall and boy are you all in for a surprise!!!

  24. The Warriors Three could make for a good Marvel related sideline movie, add in Tom Hiddleson as Loki to meddle with them (even as a cameo) would sell that movie.
