Thor & Captain America Costume Designs?

Comic Book Movie fansite operator MultiPurposePoni put up a very interesting piece regarding Marvel Movie costumes recently which looked at designs by Kotobukiya. They are exclusive Marvel licensed movie characters for statues to hint at what may end up being the costume designs of the title characters in Thor and The First Avenger: Captain America.

The posting goes through all of the previous designs dating back to the first Iron Man, followed by The Incredible Hulk and Punisher: War Zone. All of these are perfect reproductions of the characters and their costume designs shown in the film. They even have images out for their Iron Man 2 movie statue which perfectly replicates the new Mark IV Armor seen in the trailers.

What’s interesting about this is that apparently Kotobukiya has the exclusive rights for these types of art sculptures for the Marvel Studios characters and they’ve released images of what their Thor and Captain America statues will look like…

Here are a pair of shots of each of the two statues – you may click to enlarge to see the details.

Are these new statues designs following the costumes for the upcoming films? It can’t be too far off. They’re touted as designs for the Marvel Reborn storyline in the comics, but only these two characters are getting a statue for this story as of yet and the Iron Man one seems to be just the movie one. It’s not much to go on but it’s interesting to see how close the live-action costumes may mirror these.

Do you like these designs for the movies?

Even though Thor has already started principal photography and has all the costumes done, the Captain America film is still in pre-production so we don’t know where they stand with the costume design to be used in the film. Hopefully we’ll get some set photos of something from the Thor production in the near future as I’m dying to see the Asgardian set and costume designs for the Kenneth Branagh-directed film starring Chris Hemsworth.

If you’re interested, the Thor statue comes out in April and the Captain America on comes out in May. Head over to Kotobukiya to see what they have.

Iron Man 2 opens May 7, 2010, Thor opens May 5, 2011 , The First Avenger: Captain America hits July 22, 2011 and The Avengers is scheduled to debut May 4, 2012.

  1. @Rob

The statues look really cool. I wish I could afford them :)

  2. They both look good and we would be lucky to have the costumes in the movies follow the source material that closely. The Thor figure doesn't show anything Groundbreaking. Interesting take on Cap's Mask…. making kinda a WWII era helmet in the back. Not sure if I like that or not.

  3. Cap's helmet is the one notable change I noticed too and I like it. :)

  4. Thor, what can you say, he's Thor. Looks good.

I think Cap's outfit needs to be a little more Realistic for WWII era. The helmet look is a nice touch. The colors need to be much more muted though. The costume needs to have the look and feel of advanced (for the 40s) body armor.

And frankly, he needs a side arm or even like an M-1 Carbine. The shield throwing of yesteryear is gonna be tough for contemporary audiences to grab onto. Why would America send their most advanced soldier into battle without a gun?

  5. CAP=EVERYTHING IS COOL EXCEPT FOR THE HELMET AND THE PAINTED ON WINGS…

  7. 100% agreee

  8. Is it just me or does Cap's helmet look more German than American in design? Look at the back.

  9. Not to mention, what helmet doesn't cover the ears? I know my ears aren't bullet proof…

  10. I was sort of wondering what they'd do about the wings of Cap's helmet, but I think this look makes sense. It feels appropriately “dated” as looks are concerned, majoring more on functional than being stylish. Makes sense as the military refashioning existing material would like be the way to go then.

Military helmet with chain mail tunic and dyed leather for everything else. I wouldn't be opposed to adding a side arm, too, as has been mentioned. They can modernize the uniform some later on once Cap enters the 21st century.

    Works for me.

  11. Under the pics, a question mark ends the sentence, obviously asking the question if the costume for Thor will look like anything that is in the pic. before this site went up I remember seeing pic all the way to the right of the screen (nesxt to the statue designs), which opens this blog. My first reaction, as a result of seeing the picture, was…are they giving Thor a slege hammer instead of a mallet? My second reaction was…who drew this picture?

Since we all know how Hollywood likes to unecessarily change up our characters, I surely hope they do not give Thor a sledge hammer, instead of a mallet. Mjolnir is a mallet not a sledge hammer.

  12. The statues are cool. I think those are Bowen design statues. I saw some really good ones that were at the 2009 Comic Con in San Diego. Or was it San Francisco? I get those two cities mixed up. Sheeeesh.

  13. They're not Bowen (although Bowen stuff is great), they're Kotobukiya.

  14. While the statues are cool, and I'd be happy if they were the film versions, there's just no way that they are. Those statues come out over a year before their respective movies, and I just don't think Marvel would spoil the costume design so soon.

  15. i dont know about the cap one but i can tell you that Thor's is his current costume/uniform he wears in the comics since his return. although i would like that outfit to be the movie one, i'll just have to wait and see. i also would like if they made the ultimate version of caps uniforms the movie ones, he has his ww2 era uniform and his more sleek modern one, both are worth checking out as they might be the direction they go in.

  16. I don't get the feeling that these statues represent what we'll see in the feature films.

I figure we will see the Ultimate Universe representation of the Cap, with the helmet, the sleaker uniform, and with more appealing colors for use on film. I doubt seriously that we will be seeing the scales that is typical of the classic Captain America uniform. Oh, and for those who are worried about Cap carrying a sidearm, relax. He frequently used pistols and machine guns in the classic WW II stories, he never brought them with him, but like a true action hero picked them up along the way and used as necessary.

Thor looks good, however, I agree with an earlier post. It just seems to be a rehash of his current look in the Marvel 616 Universe. I like it, but again I think what we will see when the first images of the filmed costume leak out will be different. I still think he'll look good. I just hope Mjolnir looks intimidating, I want that hammer to be freaking huge!

Can't wait for either of these films!!!

  17. Vic, I saw some really great pics of designs Bowen did at the 2009 Comic Con; and I have to say, they were indeed cool. They had one scene with Angel in flight mode (wearing two different suits – red and blue), and nother with Psylocke. They even had team battles. Awesome stuff from Bowens Designs.

I haven't heard of Kotobukiya, but I think I'll check them out in a few minutes.

  18. Vic, I just came back from them Kotobukiya site. Their designs are cool. However, they don't seem to have much Marvel statues. But cool stuff, nonetheless.

  19. That is Thor's current look in Marvel Comics, and that Cap design was the Brian Hitch version of 616 WW2 Cap used in the recent Captain America Reborn comic.

I don't think those statues are movie related.

  20. I'm sure Thor and Cap wil have two different uniforms, one for their own prospective movies and one for The Avengers movie.

  21. Cap with a gun…? he has used them in the past but I think you are thinking of Sgt. Rock.
Remember Cap is a Super Soldier with an Adamantium based shield. The Shield makes the character. The helmet looks a little too much like a Nazi helmet, but I like it.
The choices for the title role…suck! Hate to say it guys but Matt Damon is Captain America!

Also i'd like to see either Gary Oldman or Mark Strong as red Skull.
