Joe Quesada Talks ‘Thor’ & ‘Captain America’; Says ‘Avengers’ Is Filming

Published 3 years ago by , Updated September 12th, 2013 at 7:21 pm,

This year and next year are going to be hugely important for Marvel Entertainment. Both Thor and Captain America have a massive amount of hype surrounding them – boosted by several well-received trailers (Chris Evans’ baby-head notwithstanding) – and next year’s The Avengers, directed by Joss Whedon, looks like a fanboy’s dream come true.

Last weekend at C2E2, Newsarama spoke with Marvel’s Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada about Marvel’s crowded cinematic plate. Quesada revealed, amongst other things, that The Avengers has already started shooting.

First, Joe Quesada talked about his impression of Thor:

“[I]n the hands of Kenneth Branagh and the entire cast, it’s a pretty phenomenal take on the character. […] I think comic fans kind of have an idea of what this movie is going to be like, but they really don’t. They’re going to be in for an experience that’s wholly unique. And I think for people who don’t know who Thor is – even if you know the mythology – you’re not going to get, I think, what you’re going to expect. It’s going to be pretty radical and pretty amazing.”

When asked how Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger differ, Quesada said (POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT!):

“I just saw the first director’s cut of Captain America about a week-and-a-half ago and there’s a very visual and visceral difference in the way that [Thor and Captain America] are shot. There’s a richness to both, but [they're] very, very different tonally. And of course, Cap starts out as a period piece, whereas Thor is more of a fantastical piece, although both are grounded very much in the real world.”

Cap starts out as a period piece, huh? Is that confirmation that, perchance, it doesn’t end as a period piece? I don’t recall this being stated outright before, but it actually jibes pretty perfectly (SPOILER ALERT AGAIN!) with what Samuel L. Jackson said last month on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. And I quote, “Thor and Captain America are pretty much done, but I haven’t done my part in them yet. I’m just connective tissue for [Thor] and [Captain America] to join the Avengers.” Check out that video below:

Jackson did one day of shooting for each film — presumably in the modern day Marvel Movie Universe, or else why would Nick Fury be inviting Captain America to join an Avengers team that doesn’t exist yet during WWII?

Speaking of The Avengers, Joe Quesada was asked if the movie had begun filming, and he answered, simply:

“Yes, yes it has.”

When asked if he thought The Avengers would top all the other Marvel movies, Quesada said:

“Yes. I mean, look at the cast. Just starting with the cast, it’s like going to a rock concert. Even in San Diego when they brought them up on stage, you got to see all these amazing actors onstage … if you didn’t get chills up your spine, you have no pulse. […] And then you have Joss Whedon at the wheel. I’ve read the screenplay. It’s amazing. I’ve seen what we’re going to do, I’ve seen designs – they’re out of this world. It’s going to be the quintessential superhero movie.”

The truth is, The Avengers could turn out to be the Marvel equivalent of Frank Miller’s The Spirit and Joe Quesada would still call it the quintessential superhero movie. That said, it’s worth noting that word around the Hollywood water cooler — from Robert Downey Jr. to James Gunn – says that Joss Whedon’s screenplay is rather fantastic. And while we’re scrutinizing every last detail of things: could Quesada’s ‘out of this world’ comment be a sly wink at those recent rumors about The Avengers villains being aliens?

  1. If WHedon hits Avengers out of the park, could he be considered one of, if not the best, comic book writers and/or directors ever?

    • Yeah, I think that you could argue that he’s one of the best if The Avengers ends up being the geek dream that many hope it is.

    • Im a huge Whedon fan but , I dont think it makes him the Best but it will get him pretty damn close, I’d consider him the best if he can follow it up with a successful sequel.

      • Joss Whedon is the biggest LEGEND going!

With David Tennant and Ty Burrell of course…:):)

        • @ Steve

Just think if Ty Burrell possibly appear in a Avengers sequel or a solo film as Doc Samson which he mentioned he’d to portray the hero.

          • OMG I just made man-goo…..;):)

            • @ Steve

              Huh????

              • Hang on though, wasn’t Tim Blake Nelson, Doc Nelson in Incredible Hulk? Ty Burrell was Betty’s psychology-guy boyfriedn lol.

But yeah it would be awesome to see Ty get bigger roles, now he’s well known on TV. Well, I mean as long as he gets to keep playing Phil Dunphy of course!!

                :)

                • oh crap, I meant Doc Samson of course lol.

Where on earth did Nelson come from? LOL!!

  2. I wonder why they didnt release Captain America on July 4th?

    • Probably b/c Transformers 3 comes out just 3 days before, and plus, July 4th falls on a Monday this year. Just guessing.

  3. The Avengers is going to be even more overstuffed and bloated with more major characters and multiple storylines than ‘Spider-Man 3’ and ‘Iron Man 2’ combined.

Ant-Man and Wasp might be in this. From the teaser trailer it seems that there will be several major villains in the film too and there are many possible supporting characters from each of the individual films of each Avenger who may appear as well.

If you include too many noticeable characters, then they’re all going be vying for attention from the audience and then none of them would get the screentime or character development they deserve.

    • I disagree , most of the “Main” characters have their own films for there developement, what they need to be aware of is focusing on the storyline and fully fleshing out the Villians and plot points. The rest of the cast should have already been fleshed out and all they will need is to pull the team together and flesh that out.

    • THe character development, for the heroes, has been developed in their own personal movies. The only new development would be for the villains and a couple new heroes possibly.

    • @ Justin Beaver

Lol, first of all, nice name. I almost say it like that all the time. But anyways with Avengers being overstuffed with characters as you mentioned, wouldn’t think of the same with Nolan’s 3rd Batman film aswell?

    • Iron Man will be in this. Hawkeye as well. Black Widow too. Thor and Hulk will be included as well as Captain America and Nick Fury. Agent Phil Coulson and Maria Hill will be in it and soon many more. I just don’t think it’s realistic or practical with so many key characters and the several subplots.

      • Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Hulk are the ones getting the face time. The SHIELD characters are secondary characters who’ll probably get like 15-20 mins each screen time if this movie goes 2 hours.

  4. Just Bring it, they really need to get this dog and pony show on the move.
I also heard that Marvel planed on having something ready for SDCC for the AVENGERS Panel. Anyone hear anything about that, are we going to get a trailer, like Last years THOR, cause that would be flippin awesome

  5. I’m thinking that the filming is taking place because both thor and cap are in “super hero” shape…. and I’m also thinking the ending of cap will be something like the animated ultimate avengers movie from 2006 being a period piece and flash forward into nick fury finding cap.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSNz7aVBKsU

this will tie in with the little easter egg from the hulk where cap is in the iceberg… ending the movie in present day/near future.

i do see some of the scenes from the new cap trailer in the animated version if you look closely.

  6. There was no easter egg in Hulk.
That was debunked b the director.

    • There is an Easter Egg, just not in the final cut. This was confirmed by the director.

    • You are totally wrong my friend… the director actually CONFIRMED the easter-egg when asked if Cap would make a cameo he said: “Yes, you will see a man in the movie” – meaning Cap. The scene with Cap is on my The Incredible Hulk Blu-Ray disk. Check out the “Alternate opening”. It’s not hard to miss, you will see a guy in a block of ice, wearing blue, red and white clothes and a round thing (the shield) with the same colors. (At the very end of the scene). Check it out on youtube if you can’t afford to buy the movie.

      • The alternate opening is supposedly of Cap but it’s a joke. You can’t see a thing. It’s a tiny flash of colors.

        • who cares if it is or it isn’t actually cap or is a weird looking piece of ice… Its fun to think it is, and it would be a good way to tie the captain america movie to the avengers. if you don’t like having fun and you don’t want to geek out about easter eggs then go not have fun on a different post. I also like to think there is an easter egg of Thor during the cave scene of the incredible hulk as well…. you know why? cause its FUN! and thats what these movies are all about.

          • I ALSO LIKE TO THINK THAT THE HULK-CAVE SCENE SHOWED THOR, BUT I DOUBT IT… (IT WAS PROBABLY JUST THE ROCK HE THREW)

I KNOW THOUGH THAT THE CAP SCENE IN HULK WAS REAL BECAUSE THE DIRECTOR CONFIRMED IT. HE CONFIRMED IT IN AN INTERVIEW.

THE SCENE DID INCLUDE CAP, BUT WAS MEANT AS A JOKE (I ADMIT), LIKE THE SCENE IN IRON MAN 1 WITH CAP’S SHIELD IN THE BACKGROUND. ONLY LATER ON, PEOPLE STARTED TO TAKE THE SCENES MORE SERIOUSLY AND STARTED TO READ MORE INTO IT THAN THERE REALLY IS.

BUT BOTTOM LINE, HE WAS IN THE ICE (JUST GET THE BLU-RAY COPY AND AN HD SCREEN – MAYBE YOUR TV IS A LITTLE FUZZY – JAKE THE SNAKE ;) – NO OFFENSE)

          • It was quick, but it was Cap, when the picture is enhanced. Easy to miss, tho, and certainly not Frosty The Snowman….

        • THE DIRECTOR CONFIRMED IT!

          CHECK YOUR EYE SIGHT!

EVERYBODY I KNOW – WHO HAS SEEN IT CAN CLEARLY SEE IT’S CAP!

I MEAN IT’S IN THE SHAPE OF A BODY, WITH THE CORRESPONDING COLORS, AND A ROUND THING (WITH THE SAME COLORS)!

AND IN THE MARVEL UNIVERSE THE HULK GOES ON A RAMPAGE IN THE ARCTIC WHERE THE AVENGERS CHASE AFTER HIM AND DISCOVER CAP!

          ANY FAN-BOY WILL CORROBORATE.

COME ON PEOPLE, BACK ME UP ON THIS!

        • P.S. TRY PAUSING THE SCENE AND WATCH IT FRAME BY FRAME – THEN YOU CAN SEE IT VERY, VERY CLEARLY.

          • - THAT’S HOW I MANAGED TO GET IT. IT’S IMPOSSIBLE TO SEE CAP BY JUST “WATCHING THE SCENE”. FRAME BY FRAME – PLEASE JUST TRY IT – YOU WILL SEE. IT’S SO CLEAR.

    • Yes it is, in the alternate opening when Bruce tries to shoot himself, insted he turns into the hulk. He then yells and the ice cracks and falls into the ocean and causes a wave. In one of the cracked ice, on the left side of the screen, you can see cap frozen in the ice, you can clearly see his shield.

  7. first of of all I gaurante that the avengers will be at least 2.45hours long. it has to be and in the right hands to many characters is not a problem. I say they just introduce them like they did with that dc universe online trailer. I think they did that perfect. And I still wish someone else was directing the avengers never have liked whedons style.

    • Alot of characters could be a problem for the wrong directors, but they had multiple characters in The X-Men, and did OK (too bad they wrote it so Wolverine hogged the scenes, glory, and action. I would have prefered more Cyclops).

  8. I have a sneaky suspicion that, much like The Tourist, Hollywood will have so much invested in THE AVENGERS that they will praise it up no matter what it’s condition.

I REALLY want it to be great, but my skepticism devil on my shoulder is whispering in my ear.

Is it possible that they are simply filming the s.h.e.i.l.d. scenes for thor and cap, while filming avengers? I mean, thor is only 1 month + 1 week away. That seems a bit risky, and unlike Brannagh’s style.

  9. @Gary S

Get your facts right. There was an easter egg in The Incredible Hulk. There was a scene with Captain America in the glacier where Bruce had gone to commit suicide. The scene was deleted in the final cut for the theaters though as it was decided that audiences unfamiliar with Cap would miss the scene and it would go wasted.

  10. Quesada – start worrying about the quality of the films and I’ll get on board.

  11. I don’t hope this movie will be success… I KNOW it will. Nothing like this has ever been done. Of course it will work! Such a great cast – lots of teamwork.
Luckily, the movie will be VERY long, which means there will be over 2 hours of the BEST TIME OF MY LIFE.
P.S. I thought they will only start shooting on the 1st of April

  12. This message goes out to screen rant:

First of all, thanks a lot for bringing us all this great news on upcoming movies.
Secondly, I just want to ask (I will probably get a knock for this, but here goes…) Just try and lay of on all these rumors, please, THE KREE AND THE SKRULLS WON’T BE IN THIS MOVIE! A MOVIE CAN ONLY BE SO LONG WITHOUT IT GETTING CONFUSING!

If you look at all the characters in it already… all the superheroes, and SHIELD agents… there won’t be room for anymore stuff. The movie will basically be where some of the avengers (like Iron Man, Hawkeye, Black Widow, Nick Fury,) team up to stop the Hulk on his rampage… then a greater evil (Loki) will “threaten the world” and then all the avengers (including Hulk, Thor, Cap) team up to stop him. As soon as Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger is released the Avengers movie plot will unravel… and I think the Cosmic Cube will have some part to play.

The sequel however… might include the Kree or Skrulls, maybe!

    Anyway!… Just a guess… lets see what happens! ;)

    • Thank heavens we have you here to clarify these things for us!

      • Hahaha! :)

  13. hmmm

  14. Ok I’ll give it a look again avenger.

  15. This movie shouldn’t be two hours long. I wouldn’t mind watching a three hour movie if it kept me entertained. What I mean is why does this movie have to be 2 too 2 1/2 hours long? Return of the king was 3 and many many people loved it, so the people who already love these characters should be able to sit for 3 maybe 3 1/2 hours to watch a fully fleshed out movie with all the right screen time and plots/subplots fully played out.

    • I’d vote for a 3 hour Avengers movie. I could sit through that with no problem if the plot and action sustained interest. I know The Ten Commandments was about 4 hours long (granted, in two parts), and wasn’t Excalibur a bit longer than normal also, both great flicks? (I have them upstairs, but I’m too lazy to run up and check the run-times).

  16. Some of you folks need to relax. This movie is called The Avengers, which is plural. Watch a sports movie like The Replacements of Major League. Watch a war movie. Then you will see that a movie can successfully be made about a team, with a large cast. Competing for screen time shouldnt be a problem, especially with competent filmmakers making the movie. Now if the staff of Wal-Mart was making it….

    • @happyman much agreed.

The Avengers has the possibility to be epic. Personally i would blend my version as a The Dirty Dozen meets Seinfeld. Larger than life characters forced into one setting. The premise is awseome for any franchise if you think about it. What if Blade Runner, Alien, Moon, Pitch Black were all created and worked in one cinematic universe. Then had a movie where in by chance key characters from each film interact with each other in some grand scheme plot.

    • There is SUCH a big difference my friend

Are you seriously trying to compare the Avengers to some sport movie… in terms of cast and numbers?

      HA

The thing is the type of cast. These people aren’t unknown actors. Robert Downey Jr, Scarlett Johanson, Sam Jackson, Jerremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo, etc. They will all want some of the lime-light. Luckely they are a great cast and will (hopefully) work well together – like a team.

  17. I am really looking forward to this. And you know what, I hope everyone is right! The Skrulls as villains, Loki as a villain, and the Hulk going nutso too. I would say I’d like to see Ultron, but maybe him for Avengers #2. And The Mandarin for Iron Man 3!

  18. I have heard more than once that Avengers might eventually be a trilogy. Anyone heard anything recently on this? I assume it all depends on how Thor, Cap, & Avengers #1 do…..! Speaking of things that no-one was speaking of that might be a trilogy, (sneaky thread???), has anyone heard if Solomon Kane will be released in this country on DVD anytime soon? One rumor said Lionsgate had picked it up, but that was later denied. I know you can buy Solomon Kane DVDs on Ebay from the release in England, which I probably will do soon. I mention this to tie it in with the Avengers article only because Solomon Kane was originally mentioned as a possible trilogy also, something else I have not heard recent re-mention of. Any info posted here is appreciated…!

    • Since most of the actors signed on for 6-9 movies (three of their own, three Avengers and/or three cameos), it´s pretty obvious that it´s gonna be a trilogy.

  19. Wait. So Banner goes all the way out to the middle of nowhere in Jabip to kill himself? It just happens to be right where Cap was frozen in the mountain? lol

  20. I still fell they’re rushing this project far too soon. The expectations of this movie are going to be almost unfathomable, so they should be taking as much time with it as possible.

Thor and Captain America should’ve been released in individual years, giving each movie space to breathe and set their own distinction. The success of Captain America will to a point depend on how well Thor does a couple of months before.

    • @ lebsta:

Marvel said that they want to make 2 – 3 movies a year. Last year we only got Iron Man 2 and everybody complained that there weren’t enough superhero movies that year.

These movies (Thor and Cap) are only being made to introduce the people to the characters so that the Avengers won’t seem confusing to those who aren’t familiar with Marvel.

You said: “Thor and Captain America should’ve been released in individual years, giving each movie space to breathe and set their own distinction.” – that is actually the OPPOSITE of what Marvel studios want! They want to make all their movies feel like one big story, crossing over from one to the other to connect them all!

So, actually, you have no idea what you are talking about!

I still say what is the difference between 2012 and 2014. Let them release it in 2012. Actors only live so long ;).

  21. I still want to see THANOS brought in somewhere along the line and I always thought Brian Dennehy would have made an excellent actor to play the part – I know he’s older now – but with effects make-up etc – just my thought for the day folks !
