Widely considered one of the greatest actors alive, any insight into a performance from Sir Anthony Hopkins is worth a listen.  The character in question is Odin, ruler of Asgard, the home of the gods in Norse mythology.  Did I forget to mention that he’s also the father of the titular character in Branagh’s upcoming adaptation of Thor?

Hopkins spoke to the LA Times and the news careened off SuperHeroHype before landing in our laps.

Without further ado, here’s what Hopkins had to say about playing Odin:

“He’s a stern man. He’s a man with purpose. I play the god who banishes his son from the kingdom of Asgard because he screwed up. He’s a hot-headed, temperamental young man — probably a chip off of the old block — but I decide he’s not really ready to rule the future kingdom, so I banish him. I’m harsh and my wife complains and I say, ‘That is why I’m king.’ He’s ruthless, take-it-or-leave-it. Women are much more forgiving; men are not so forgiving. I know in my life, my karma is, ‘If you don’t like it, tough, move on.’ And I move on. I’m a little like Odin myself.”

How’s the legendary actor getting along with his director?  Take this(!):

“Kenneth Branagh is such a terrific director and a wonderful guy to work with”.

Booooorrrrriiiiingg.  That’s what we get for putting professionals together on set.  Speaking of professionals, Hopkins joins Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman in the cast, playing Thor and Jane Foster, respectively. The rest of the cast is equally as distinguished. For more details on the cast, and start of production on Thor, go HERE.

With Branagh’s well-known directorial skills and acting chops to spare, this has the makings of the best comic book movie yet.

Thor will descend into theaters on May 6, 2011.

  1. Anthony Hopkins might be the coolest old guy around. I'm excited to what he can do with Odin. I'm hoping he doesn't look as weird as that CGI character in Beowulf.

  2. Hopkins is pretty awesome but I hope he has his act together for Thor. I can't say he did for The Wolfman.

  3. i think he'll look like neeson from clash of the titnas, only with a white beard

  4. “The best comic book movie yet” ? I had to double check who was writing this article…you sounded like Rob there for a second :P
But I agree, this movie is looking really good. Can't wait until we finally get a teaser or a trailer or something.
