Images from the set of Thor: Love and Thunder show the film returning to the real Asgard. Director and writer Taika Waititi shook up the God of Thunder's Marvel Cinematic Universe sub-franchise in Thor: Ragnarok. Aside from changing the overall vibe and look of the film series, the movie also destroyed two key elements of Thor's solo adventures: Mjölnir and Asgard. Now, however, it seems like both of them are returning through the Asgardian Prince's next standalone project.

Breaking the traditional solo trilogy for Marvel Studios' leading heroes, Chris Hemsworth will be back for a fourth standalone movie on the heels of Ragnarok's success. Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie and Natalie Portman as Jane Foster are also confirmed. Belatedly, additional Thor 4 cast members were announced such as Chris Pratt and the majority of the Guardians of the Galaxy actors. Meanwhile, Christian Bale was confirmed as the main villain, Gorr the God Butcher. Plot details are still scarce at the moment with production going smoothly in Australia. But the latest set images tease Thor: Love and Thunder may be returning to the real Asgard.

Courtesy of Daily Mail are new aerial shots of the movie's filming site on the coastline of Sydney. While the vicinity of the filming site has been fenced for privacy, the Thor: Love and Thunder snaps reveal what appears to be a recreation of Asgard. Unfortunately, no actors were spotted while these photos were taken as the building of the structures was still ongoing.

Surtur destroying Asgard in Thor Ragnarok

At the end of Thor: Ragnarok, Asgard was purposefully destroyed by Thor and his allies to stop Hela from further wreaking havoc. This forced them to evacuate the planet and seek refuge on Earth until they were hijacked by Thanos' ship. While half of the Asgardians were killed by the Mad Titan, the other half made it safely to their destination, and by Avengers: Endgame, it's revealed they have settled in Norway. The sets being built for Thor: Love and Thunder look nothing like what's been seen in the settlement thus far. It's worth noting the stage is reminiscent of the one at the beginning of Thor: Ragnarok where the Asgardians staged Loki's fake death in Thor: The Dark World. Given the cliff and ocean background, this might be for the dramatization of Odin's death.

Assuming that Thor: Love and Thunder indeed returns to Asgard, it will be interesting to see how it's explained. The planet was destroyed in Thor: Ragnarok, so unless it was rebuilt, it's impossible to revisit it. There's the possibility these sets are for flashback sequences. Otherwise, perhaps Valkyrie simply tried to make New Asgard more like its predecessor to help her people feel at home on Earth. In any case, like the expected return of Mjölnir in Thor 4, hopefully Waititi has a great explanation for Thor's potential return to his home planet.
