The second chapter of Phase Two of the Marvel Cinematic Universe brings moviegoers back to Asgard in a big way, but it also delves into several new key locations from the comics. Half of the running time of Thor: The Dark World is spent on Earth with the other half spent on Asgard and other worlds yet to be explored.

In the sequel, director Alan Taylor not only fleshes out Asgardian culture and adventures to the other realms hinted at in Thor, but the story he’s attempting to tell takes a deeper look into Marvel’s take on Norse mythology, many elements of which may be laying the groundwork for Thor 3.

Screen Rant visited the production of Thor: The Dark World last October and on our first day we journeyed through large outdoor sets that represented a pub, streets and several buildings within the city streets of Asgard – something that didn’t make an appearance in the original film which spent its time primarily in the shiny palace of King Odin. The largest area in these sets was the Einherjar training grounds.

In Norse Mythology and in Marvel Comics the Einherjar are fallen warriors who spend their death feasting and forever fighting, waiting for the day of the Ragnarok where they can fight for Asgard once again. From what we can gather in the film they’re more of an elite fighting force as opposed to the “dead” and we will see them train with Odin looking over them as a General of sorts.

What’s interesting about their inclusion though is the connection to Ragnarok, an apocalypse of sorts that represents the end of Asgard. On day two of the Thor 2 set visit, executive producer Craig Kyle walked us through the art room and showed us imagery of another important part of Norse mythology – the tree of Yggdrasil – and explained what it means for the film and the great Marvel universe, foreboding a potential major future story arc.

“This is Hall of Science again, another place you’re going to see today. This is gonna be a pretty neat spot that we actually get to explore, which will go into the various breakthroughs and discoveries of the Asgardians where you’ll see functioning models of the Big Bang and all these wonderful technologies that no human has ever laid eyes on before.

And inside’s gonna be this living tree, which we believe is connected to Yggdrasil, the cosmic tree.  And the effects and woes and success of the universe are spoken through this, this living object.  So, should the end of all things ever come this would probably be the first thing to fall.  And we have a really tremendous scene in here with Thor and Odin.”

The end of all things? Are you guys talking about Ragnarok?

“It’s one of the bigger stories, right?  [LAUGHS] So, who knows?  [LAUGHS]“

In Thor, Loki and the Frost Giants of Jotunheim were the primary antagonists. In Thor: The Dark World, Malekith and the Dark Elves of Svartalfheim take on the villain duties. If Thor 3 is in the cards for Phase Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the next logical enemy faction would be the Fire Demons of Muspelheim and their leader Surtur.

In Marvel Comics there are some interesting alliances formed between Loki, Malekith and Surtur in an attempt to free Surtur so I asked producer Craig Kyle if Malekith could be working for someone else.

“It’s hard to say. [LAUGHS] I know in the comics he did.”

Are we going to see Fire Demons? Kyle continued:

You’re gonna see aliens from all over, uh, specifically, you know, it’ll be a wait and see. [LAUGHS] Like I said we are moving further out into the nine realms of the universe, so, you know, you can’t fly too far before you hit something else in the universe.  So [lAUGHS] we’ll see.

Marvel is always looking ahead and if the Thor franchise is to continued, it would be strange for the realm of Muspelheim to not be explored. There are many big story events that could be taken from the books and used in future films, including Surtur attacking both Asgard and Earth. We expect, that like Odin’s vault in the first movie, there will be many easter eggs in The Dark World, some of which will be seeds for the future of the franchise.

  1. C’mon guys, if you are going to start Surtur talk, at least post pictures drawn by Walt Simonson, from the DOOM saga.

This goes double for the Malekith stuff, since he created the character, as well as Algrim and Kurse.

    • I have a few actually but they’re not high-res. Not many good shots from the classics unfortunately.

      • Actually,Rob, that’s not a bad picture at all.
That’s a decent picture of Surtur wielding that giant sword, with those warriors in the foreground.

  2. Please!! If we could also get enchantress that would be awesome. Thor is my favorite property and would hope that Thor 3 is in the cards for phase 3 as well as cap 3 cuz I high hopes for the winter solider.

Surtur would be the s*** though. Thor vs him would be a battle of the year

    • I couldn’t agree more to have Enchantress in the story as well! She’s long overdue for an appearance!

  3. DOOM!

    • @Q,Y! we gotta hear that sound in Thor 2!!

  4. Before I even opened this article I knew it was Ragnarok. I can see it happening and have Odin and Thor bring Asgard to Oklahoma in the MCU. As long as Thor survives AOU, Ragnarok will occur!

  5. Ha, that producer didn’t try hard at all to dispel the rumor that Surtur is involved in 2 and will likely have a big role in 3.

  6. Sure hope they aren’t planning on ignoring the enchantress. That would suck. Then again it wouldn’t surprise me if they did. “Sigh” thing is even Tom hiddleston says he wants the enchantress to be in the third arc.

  7. My knowledge of Thor isn’t as strong as it is for alot of other characters in the Marvel Universe, but I was thinking that Thor could die in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Then Thor could end up in Hel with Hela (if that’s how that would work) at the beginning of Thor 3 and the first part of that movie would be Surtur rising to power without Thor around, and Thor fighting his way out of Hel in order to face Surtur.

    • I’d like to see him get killed in one of the realms, then wake up in Hel in a new body. The asgardians being scientifically advanced would mean the mechanism of Hel and Hela would involve Hela having possession and control of their only cloning/rebirth tech. They REALLY don’t want to out in the realms because it would mean waking up imprisoned in Hela’s realm.

      Just a thought I had.

      • don’t want to *die* out in the realms because it would mean waking up imprisoned in Hela’s realm.

  8. I would also love to see Hela and Karnilla Queen of the Narns in addition to the Enchantress.

  9. Sounds like fun.

  10. Dark elves already look like mutant teletubys, however thats spelled. Wonder how they’d mess up fire demons?

    • That’s just the masks they wear.

  11. I would to see Beta Ray Bill and Thor. Team up soon on the big screen

    • Love *

    • +1

  12. For Thor 3 I dont know who I want more as a villain Enchantress and Executioner or Surtur. Id also like to see Beta Ray Bill

    • I’d like to see the Enchantress be a villian in Thor. I’ve seen the trailers for Thor 2. Lady Sif (Alexander) looks pretty pissed off that Jane Foster (Portman) is back in the picture. Hell have no fury like a woman scorn. Have her character go abe Sh*% and let her become the Enchantress. In Thor 3 she can really hit Thor close to home. End of Line.

  13. I have a good feeling the third movie will have Surtur in it but I really am still hoping for the Enchantress and the Executioner I always thought they were a sweet pair of villains. I have a pretty good feeling that there was a team up between Surtur and Enchantress and Executioner at least one point in the comics so maybe they could do something like that but that may run the risk of having too many characters and nobody wants that. I also like Absorbing Man if they’re going for something different, Steve Austin physically looks the part not sure if he can pull off the acting chops though. I look forward to the third one either way.

  14. I want to see beta ray bill in thor 3

  15. Surtur would be good.

  16. Beta Ray Bill

  17. Changed my name on here so we don’t get confused with the other Nick…

But this is very interesting, someone over a CBM wrote an editorial about how Sutur should be in Thor III

  18. Am I the only one who would love to see Odin and Hulk fighting off an army of fire giants?

Or Odin and Nick Fury exchanging eye patch jokes.

  19. “[LAUGHS]” – i hate this guy. Did he really laughed through all sentences?

Anyway, Surtur would be epic, if they won’t do it for the next movie it’d be stupid.
Malekith was always lame to me. I never liked the choice for the 2nd movie.

    • It was a candid conversation so we left the details in so you can get a sense of the context. Still, it’s hard to relay a real convo via the written word.

You should check out the Tom Hiddleston interview for more laughs. It’s a good thing, not something you should “hate.”

    • they should’ve had Ulik in the next one

  20. if you bringing in Surtur…we the fans want to see BETA RAY BILL! period!

    • That would be so weird, but I kind of want to see it too.

  21. Him and Ulik would be so dope. Cause would be a dope character to bring in. Ulik can be a henchmen.

  22. Making THOR 3 will be a great idea because THOR is the Best character and Franchise of Marvel , and THOR 2 will be a huge success it will probably reach one Billion mark

  23. Chris Hemsworth needs to be Jondalar from Clan of the Cave Bear book series!

  24. This would work if Caber/Leir and Hercules were introduced, opening up the other pocket dimensions of Avalon, Olympus and Heliopolis
