‘Thor: The Dark World’ Trailer: Earth Under Attack Again

Published 2 years ago by , Updated April 25th, 2013 at 7:47 am,

Thor gave his word that he would return and he did in The Avengers. Now he owes Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) another return to Earth and a very good explanation as to why he didn’t visit last summer.

With Iron Man 3 opening in select markets this week, the marketing campaign for Thor: The Dark World has begun and we already have the first teaser poster, new photos and a few key plot details to go with the very first Thor 2 teaser trailer.

An early description of the Thor trailer from a presentation in Italy and the more recent latest teaser description from another presentation in Mexico highlight similar key moments and themes. As it turns out, these were only partly accurate.

Thor is back, now more of a veteran viking warrior with a great sense of leadership and responsibility. He’s got longer hair to go with his ever-so-slightly redesigned armor and Mjolnir hammer. More importantly, he must face his greatest threat yet.

Official Thor: The Dark World synopsis:

Marvel’s “Thor: The Dark World” continues the big-screen adventures of Thor, the Mighty Avenger, as he battles to save Earth and all the Nine Realms from a shadowy enemy that predates the universe itself.  In the aftermath of Marvel’s “Thor” and “Marvel’s The Avengers,” Thor fights to restore order across the cosmos…but an ancient race led by the vengeful Malekith returns to plunge the universe back into darkness.  Faced with an enemy that even Odin and Asgard cannot withstand, Thor must embark on his most perilous and personal journey yet, one that will reunite him with Jane Foster and force him to sacrifice everything to save us all.

It’s not just the Dark Elves that Thor must battle, but the wrath of an angry stranded human love interest in Jane Foster, and the love triangle that forms thanks to Thor’s history with Sif. This is only teased in the first Thor: The Dark World trailer.

Along with brief shots of action on Asgard, Earth and other locations, we see Jane Foster taken to Asgard, a close-up of Malekith’s (Christopher Eccleston) scarred face, brief shots of Earth under attack, and a mysterious space vessel. The biggest highlight and the “hook” of the teaser is the rugged, imprisoned Loki, and Thor warning him that if he again attempts betrayal, he will be killed. After his scene-stealing role in The Avengers, Tom Hiddleston is essential to helping market the Thor followup.

Even from the disjointed teaser which serves more as a brief sizzle reel, the overhaul of tone and style is evident. Director Alan Taylor’s influence is not only fitting, but welcome, and a touch of Rome and Game of Thrones is exactly what Marvel Studios needed to deliver the next chapter in the space viking superhero story. It’s more polished, more detailed and more fleshed out – and that’s key since Asgard (and the other realms) have an expanded role in the sequel.

What’s going on in the scene with Jane Foster caught in some sort of vortex sandstorm? Why is that truck floating in the intro? How does Thor travel freely between realms?

Iron Man 3 opens in U.S. theaters on May 3rd, 2013, followed by Thor: The Dark World on November 8th, 2013. Captain America: The Winter Soldier opens April 4th, 2014, Guardians of the Galaxy on August 1st, 2014The Avengers 2 on May 1st, 2015,  Ant-Man on November 6th, 2015 and Doctor Strange sometime after.

  1. Why is my comment in moderation?

There are no personal attacks or profanity in it.

    • haha, you probably used some key word that gets flagged…..I could rattle off a few but then MY comment would get flagged :P

  2. Thor’s Hammer handle gets longer with each film.

    • That’s what having Natalie Portman, Jaimie Alexander, and Kat Dennings around will do.

      • Wait, why would that make his handle get longer? lol that doesn’t even make any sense.

        • Actually, the hammer did change size in the actual Norse myths.

“when he wanted, it would be so small that it could be carried inside his tunic.”

Note that he kept it in his tunic, and not his breeches, so no symbolism there at all. Nope.

    • thicker too.

  3. I thought that trailer was terrible, but i’m hoping its because they didn’t want to reveal to much.

    • Your grammar is TOO terrible. Grammar-Nazi indahouse.

      • Your insult is terrible. Putting the word “too” before terrible is completely unnecessary.

      • However, if you were only berating Bill because of his negative view towards the awesome Thor 2 trailer then I applaud your efforts :)

  4. Chris Hemsworth has just recently when takling to USA Today said that he wanted to take Thors fighting style to a whole other level, and that the style that thor uses is something we haven’t seen before.
So i am totally looking forward this right now.

  5. Eh, it was a mediocre trailer. Certainly didn’t wow me like Iron Man 3′s trailer did. Hope they don’t ruin the Thor character with another meh movie.

  6. It looks as if Jane might die!
Maybe that is just the editing but she looks to be in deep sh*t, Loki looks awesome as well and I hope he can redeem himself just a bit!

  7. COMICS! Seriously, I love movies nowadays. I grew up dreaming about a day with this many good comic book movies being developed. It’s a good time to be me.

  8. Why does Loki look like he joined Skrillex? Anyway, I’m looking forward to this.

  9. maybe loki saves jane and redeems himself that way and that’s why Thor screams “NOOO” in the trailer. Regardless can’t wait to see this movie also!! LOVE MARVEL!!

    • No I think they kill Jane dude… or maybe they capture her. Cuz Thor looks pretty messed up in that shot. It would have to be something serious to bring him to that level “NOOOO!!”

  10. That was an awesome teaser!! I’ve been waiting for some decent footage of Thor 2 for awhile now and I’m not dissapointed!! Looking forward to everything phase 2 has to offer :D

  11. AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love THOR dude is a bad@$$

  12. The trailer was okay. Everyone know’s the plot of the film so it wasn’t a surprise. I’m going to stop reading spoilers and stuff because it lessens my excitement by the time official footage comes out. The highlights of the trailer for me were the visuals; it certainly looks Games Of Throne-ish and that’s a good thing, and Loki in civilian clothes. Casting Tom Hiddleston was genius.

  13. This trailer is ever more proof that the Avengers have no solid characters (except Iron Man). I’ll watch it on USA Network in two years.

    • How can a 2 min trailer prove anything? Are you sure you arr not just trolling?

    • The Avengers have solid caracters, ‘Iron Man’ just happens to be the most popular team member that’s all. This film could turn out to be epic and you just might be eating your words backtracking and singing a different tune when it hits theaters.

    • Good luck, Debbie Downer. They haven’t even aired the first Thor on premium cable yet, let alone basic cable. I love how people make whole-cloth assumptions about a film based solely on 2 minutes of scramble-edit footage.

Well, you’ve changed the world’s mind, Debbie. None of us in the entire world are going to see this movie now because you “proved your point.”

      • Steve i agree with you man, some people are just slow and don’t pick up on these things like other folks do. For a 2 minute teaser trailer this did everything it needed to do and more as far as i’m concerned. Like you said they have not premired “Thor” on cable or network at all after two years. Hell they have’nt premired “The Avengers” on stupid HBO or Showtime, why i don’t know.

  14. I cannot understand why so many people are not liking this. You have to remember it is a TEASER Trailer. Not a full trailer. They annoouced it that way. So of course it jumps around alot. Movie comes out in Lat October and here in the U S in November. They just got done with princaple filming. Of course it was thrown together. They didnt have to do it. But they threw us a bone. And I appreciate it. Thors my favorite and it looks like this time they are gonna do him justice

  15. LOKI reminds me of Eric Draven (The Crow), no wonder there’s rumors about Tom Hiddleston as Eric Draven

    • Does look somewhat similar but if you look closely, the face doesn’t have the bumps & groves and everything else of The Other.

  16. This movie looks bad-arsed. In the books Thor learns to travel to use his hammer to open portals to just about anywhere. Some books even have him able to time travel using Mjolnir but I think they wont take that direction in the movies.

It’s funny, I was just watching an Ancient Aliens on NatGeo and they were discussing how the Norse gods may have been aliens and the descriptions were what the vikings perceived their tech to be. I know it’s crazy, but still cool to think about.

  17. This will be epic!

  18. The movie looks awesome, but am I the only one who notices that Malekith’s “dark side” is on the wrong side?

It has been bugging me ever since I saw the first set photos.

  19. This was only a teaser trailer and it looked fantastic, i’m really looking forward to seeing “Thor: The Dark World” this fall.

  20. I actually loved the trailer. Might be biased as I’m a HUGE Thor fan, but it looks a lot more interesting than the first one.

  21. This looks really good and looks to be better than the first (which I enjoyed). Phase 2 is almost here! Its a good time to be a comic nerd.

  22. That last shot of Loki in the trailer is TOTALLY for the ladies. :-P

  23. HOLY s***, This movie looks AMAZING. I cant wait.

  24. How do sm people not like this trailer? I thought it was fantastic.

    • @Bob – I agree with you, this trailer does look fantastic. Some people are just weird man and would’nt know a good looking trailer if it slapped them smack in the face which i feel like doing, lol.

  25. looking good!

  26. Looks amazing. I’m disappointed it wasn’t shown before Iron Man 3 like promised but definitely excited. Can’t wait for November.

  27. Hi peeps,

The hammer did change. I was the guy that modelled it in 3D for Propshop Modelmakers at Pinewood Studios.
It was then printed on our 3D printers. Marvel and the designers were never truly happy with the previous designs. So, this was a chance for them to instruct me on what they wanted it to be like. The handle was made a little longer to reflect its Norse heritage as an actual weapon that has to be wielded for maximum impact!

There is much more to this movie which hasn’t been hinted at yet…

    Regards, Jet

  28. The new movie trailer Thor is a good one and is getting good feedback. I watched the movie trailer online and waiting to watch the complete movie.
