[Update: Watch the Thor: The Dark World trailer here!]

Phase 2 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is ready to begin, and Iron Man 3 (which opens in the U.S. next month) will be the sequel to kick it off. That film will include a teaser trailer for the other Phase 2 installment arriving later this year, Thor: The Dark World, and today we can offer that superhero movie’s real piece of marketing – in the shape of a poster, featuring Chris Hemsworth as the God of Thunder – before the trailer arrives next week (see: this trailer description).

Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Natalie Portman (Jane Foster) and Anthony Hopkins (Odin) will reprise their Thor roles in the sequel, which features new additions Christopher Eccleston (the 9th Doctor on Doctor Who) and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Lost), who are playing, respectively, the Dark Elf Malekith the Accursed and Algrim the Strong/Kurse. Kenneth Branagh is not back as director; instead, that job has been given to Alan Taylor, a former co-showrunner and director on HBO’s Game of Thrones.

Here is the official synopsis for Thor: The Dark World:

In the aftermath of Marvel’s “Thor” and “Marvel’s The Avengers,” Thor fights to restore order across the cosmos…but an ancient race led by the vengeful Malekith returns to plunge the universe back into darkness.  Faced with an enemy that even Odin and Asgard cannot withstand, Thor must embark on his most perilous and personal journey yet, one that will reunite him with Jane Foster and force him to sacrifice everything to save us all.

Now, have a look at the teaser poster (via Marvel):

This poster doesn’t really provide a good approximation of the naturalism and grounded viking aesthetic that Taylor is bringing to the Thor sequel – as we’ve seen evidenced by leaked set photos throughout its production – but it’s a stylish and effective tease of what’s to come nonetheless, especially in comparison to the more questionable Marvel movie poster jobs we’ve seen in the past (cough, The Avengers, cough).

Check back here next week for when the Thor: The Dark World trailer hits iTunes next Tuesday on April 23rd, ahead of its theatrical premiere in front of Iron Man 3!

Iron Man 3 opens in U.S. theaters on May 3rd, 2013, followed by Thor: The Dark World on November 8th, 2013, Captain America: The Winter Soldier on April 4th, 2014, Guardians of the Galaxy on August 1st, 2014The Avengers 2 on May 1st, 2015 and Ant-Man on November 6th, 2015.

  1. Nice enough poster, would like some more Natalie Portman so I can look at her beautiful face.

  2. Hahahah YES! I’ve been waiting for this!! This is my most anticipated phase 2 film besides of course the avengers. I thought the first one was incredible. I’ve watched it so many times. Poster looks great! Love the new armour and suit! Chris hemsworth is Thor! Can’t wait for that trailer next week! Poster is awesome. Definelty buying this one to add to my collection.

  3. I’m looking forward to this way more than Ironman. Can’t wait for the trailer.

  4. I’m so upset that they changed patrick doyle to… carter burwell !!

seriously marvel, do you know the word “continuity”? i don’t understand why they have to change composers for every movie!!

it’s a nice poster and i’m still looking to see the trailer.

    • when did you hear that? I must have missed that news. :-(

      • it’s in the poster and in

    • “seriously marvel do you know the word “continuity?”

LOL. No. They don’t. Continuity is detrimental to telling new stories and selling new books. The absolute abortion that is known as “World War Hulk” confirms that. The very same month that WWH was released, (a comic that basically portrays Hulk as the supreme being of the universe that no one can do anything about) another comic is released that depicts the Hulk getting outmatched by the likes of Sue Reed, Spiderman, and Thing. This happens in the very same month that a story is released that claims Hulk can’t be stopped by all the heroes of the universe COMBINED.

So yeah, if you’re looking at Marvel for continuity… you might want to look elsewhere.

    • Patrick Doyle never signed to do it, the poster is the first announcement of who the composer would be.

  5. he has to sacrifice everything? yikes.

  6. I love it! I hope that the fact that Tom Hiddleston’s name is up on the poster next to Chris’, Natalie Portman’s and Anthony Hopkins’ means that his role will be significant even if he’s not the main villain of the movie.

The Thor&Loki brotherhood is the best part.

I am so excited for the trailer!

    • They would be foolish not to include Loki after the massive push he got in Avengers.

  7. I still have my fingers crossed hoping that Beta Ray Bill will show up

  8. He talks like shakespear and get his ass kicked by hulk. Why do the avengers need him? Oh yeah to appeal to little kids that like vikings lol

    • Apart from the fact that vikings are tied with dinosaurs as The Greatest Things of Ever, Thor is great. He is a “tank” character much like the Hulk, and he can also control lightning and has a kickass hammer.

    • Yeah, appeal to little kids.

Also not to mention that he’s the god of thunder and easily killed the most chitarri amongst all the avengers–making him by far the most powerful and thus promising an epic movie this November.

    • You should watch the Avengers film. He held his own against Hulk before he even got his hammer in his hand. Hulk even got a revenge punch later.

  9. Looks great! Man, I can’t wait for this, Chris Hemsworth does a great job as Thor.

  10. I’m glad the sequel is more grounded, I wasn’t a fan of the overly cg’ed effects and sets of the first one.

  11. Thats a pretty well done poster. I was just watching The Avengers this morning and I must say, Im pretty excited for all of the Phase 2 Marvel films. Next to TA , “Thor” was my favorite Phase 1 movie, so im pumped to see what Thor : The Dark World, has coming. Next up is Iron Man 3 :)

  12. FINALLY! A friggin poster! I was beginning to think this movie wasn’t happening anymore! ;)

It’s decent enough, but a little boring imo. I much prefer The Wolverine’s first two teaser poster…

  13. Looks badass!

  14. Cool poster, can’t wait for the trailer next week.

  15. Most anticipated film of the year!

  16. Could have been a poster for the first film. Meh.

    • That’s kinda be main gripe with it too. The poster’s snowy/stormy backdrop is too reminiscent of Thor’s battle in Jotumheim from the first movie.

They could have done something that represents the scale of the movie (i.e. the expansion into all the different “realms” that’ll be in the movie).

Hopefully the next poster is something more memorable…

      • My thoughts are this is the first in a series of posters showcasing what different realms Thor will be in.

  17. Do I see if SR will post the Thor: TDW trailer on here or wait until next thursday and see it on the big screen when I go see IM3?

    Decisions, decisions…

    Poster looks cool though.

    • It’ll premiere on TUESDAY. :-)

  18. It’s GAR

  19. The lightning looks awesome!

  20. This movie better be at least 2 hours long. The first thor was so short it was ridiculous.

    • Are you going to cameo anytime soon Warlock? Those of us that are “in the know” are well aware that you need to be around if Thanos is to be dealt with…

  21. I think i’m in the minority when I say this but Thor was my favourite of the Phase One standalone movies. Can’t wait for the sequel.

  22. Please…..Screenrant staff which ever one of you go to ComiCon this year or any other Marvel Exclusive event, please ask them why Thor is constantly NOT wearing his iconic helmet. The fans want to know. Thanks :)

    • Because most fans know that in the MCU, the helmet is for formal, official, royal events and not for fighting.

      • @Ink, I hear that but why does Loki wear his during battle but Thor does not? Loki’s helmet is bigger and MORE cumbersome too. I’m pretty sure it’s because he doesn’t want to wear it.

  23. ironman’s inverted skyfall poster was the best marvel poster so far in phase 2

  24. i’m ready for the trailer.

  25. Too bad the trailer ain’t gonna be out on Thorsday.

  26. Now there’s a poster I would buy! I like it :)

  27. The movie is Thor, the poster features Thor, he looks badass, all is well.

  28. Great Poster! I want that hammer!!
