New Thor: The Dark World Villain Details: Who Are The Marauders?

For nearly a year, we’ve been speculating that Thor: The Dark World could feature multiple realms and more than one enemy faction vying for the destruction of Asgard. Lately, the majority of the Thor 2 villain conversations have centered around a face-off between the titular God of Thunder and Dark Elves led by the wrathful Malekith the Accursed (Christopher Eccleston). An official plot synopsis for Thor: The Dark World painted a clear picture of where Malekith and his army fit into the post-Avengers storyline – leading many fans to assume that the Dark Elves were the only game in town.

However, a new comment from Marvel Studios executive producer Craig Kyle confirms that the Dark Elves will not be the only enemy faction Asgard will face in Thor 2 - teasing another group of evildoers known as “The Marauders.”

The Marauders were previously captured in Dark World set-photos and video – though it was unclear, at the time, how they fit into the larger storyline (aside from Mjolnir fodder). Now, courtesy of an Empire [via CBM] interview with Kyle, we have a bit more insight into their Thor 2 role as well as confirmation of other key plot details.

Malekith (Christopher Eccleston) and the Dark Elves

According to the report, Thor: The Dark World will pick-up one year after The Avengers – and two years after the first Thor movie. At the sequel’s start, Thor – “now a full-time general” – and his forces are over-extended at war in The Nine Realms as a group of “rag-tag invaders known as The Marauders” thins and weakens the Asgardian army. Responding to the Marauder threat leaves Asgard vulnerable - allowing Malekith and the Dark Elves to mount a more effective assault on Thor’s home realm. Whether or not The Marauders are acting on their own orders or are manipulated by Malekith, Loki, Thanos, or some other unseen enemy isn’t known at this time. Though, it’s easy to imagine The Dark Elves using The Marauders as pawns in their larger plans to destroy Asgard.

Readers who have been following our coverage of Thor: The Dark World will remember we had speculated that Malekith might team with Surtur and the fire giants of Muspelheim in the attack on Asgard. Marvel has promised that there are plenty of Thor 2 surprises yet to be spoiled (along with a few that have been spoiled) but it’s looking more likely that, instead of a realm-specific army, The Marauders are a mix of viking-like humans as well as isolated members of other beastly races – some possibly from Hel (the Norse Underworld) and Vanaheim.

Whether or not prior casting reports that called for extras “skilled in playing with fire means that The Marauders could also include a few Muspelheims or just fire-breathing/twirling humans is speculation at this point. While prior evidence of The Maruaders came in the form of that live action on-set battling, it’s still possible that their respective scenes also include set pieces where Thor and his compatriots fight giant fiery CGI monsters as well. That said, it’s equally likely that Marvel is saving full-on appearances by Muspelheim and Hel for future sequels.

Kyle admits that Thor was the toughest sell in Phase One but, now that the character has been introduced in The Avengers, there’s a lot more room to explore fantastical story (and enemies) in Phase Two:

“Expectations are high. By bringing director Alan Taylor into the mix, with his expertise on The Sopranos, Mad Men and Game Of Thrones, we came up with a take that allows us to get more into the nooks and crannies of Asgard and its people. We spend more time on the ground with the commoners, as opposed to in the palace. It’s a very complicated blend [of genres: high science fiction, gritty fantasy, and realism]. Thor is, until Guardians of the Galaxy hits, by far our most wild, fringe Marvel piece. But that’s why it’s the Marvel Universe and not Marvel Earth!”

The Marauders should serve as a good way of putting Thor and his friends on the ground with the Asgardian army – as opposed to the first film where the story focused primarily on the God of Thunder, Sif, and the Warriors Three with little insight into how Loki’s actions were affecting the people of Asgard. Between The Dark Elves and The Marauders, along with the ever-scheming LokiThe Dark World should provide a better balance of captivating drama to accompany lightning strikes and Mjolnir face smashing.

Iron Man 3 releases May 3rd, 2013, Thor: The Dark World on November 8th, 2013, Captain America: The Winter Soldier on April 4th, 2014, Guardians of the Galaxy on August 1st, 2014, The Avengers 2 on May 1st, 2015 and Ant-Man on November 6th, 2015.

  1. Super Excited. I have a feeling now that the exposition’s done we’re going to get some real substance from these Phase 2 movies

  2. I think they will be from Vanaheim and/or Nornheim, both of those have a mix of races living there, and Vanaheim in particular would fit for the Viking like warriors on horseback.

  3. I think ths will be great

  4. seriously… i cannot wait for the next couple marvel phases, we are getting more and more comic like in the movies with it getting more universeal and adding magic elements.

when guardians comes and depending on its popularity this could change the way the makers look at the whole genre and letting the source material have more of a priority than changing it to be set in the ‘real world’

  5. Anyone think Thor will wear that nice lookin helmet of his in battle?

    • Uhm… No. ;-)

  6. I want a trailer!

  7. Marauder? I hardly know her!

    • That’s a knee-slapper, yer Honor!

  8. Honestly, this sounds terribly boring to me :(

I was hoping there’d be something BIG going on behind the scenes of Thor 2 (like Surtur), but the more I’m hearing about the movie, the more it comes across as a rehash of Thor 1… with a different director.

Obviously I’m still expecting great things from Thor: TDW, but I can’t shake the feeling that something’s amiss.

    • Which part?

    • Really? This doesn’t like Thor 1 AT ALL to me.
This is my most anticipated CBM of 2013

      • Even though I´m looking forward to this one as well (Hemsworth to me is Thor, just like Downey is Iron Man), I´m looking more forward to CA: TWS.

        • I as well am most excited about CA: TWS, CA TFA was my favorite movie of phase one. As far as Phase two movies this year I am far more excited for Thor: TDW than I am for IM3. Don’t get me wrong I am still very pumped for any Marvel/Disney movie.

          • Hm. Maybe it´s because I´m a Downey fan, but I´m more excited for IM3 than for Thor 2.

            • I’m also more excited for Iron man 3, but that’s more because I’m a big Shane Black fan.

    • @the Avenger – I’m not sure if I’d compare it to Thor 1, but I get what you’re saying about potentially being boring. I’m worried it’ll mirror Lord of Rings where Thor/Frodo and Sif/Sam and the Warriors three/Fellowship of the Ring must go on a quest to save Asgard/middle Earth from the Dark Elf/Lord Malekith/Sauron. However, if that said quest takes them to Earth to have coffee with Kat Dennings and Natalie Portman then it’ll become Thor 1 and I’ll be very upset.

Still, I will buy my ticket and hope that I’m wrong.

      • Great post!

As a Marvel fan boy I have not done my due diligence to the Thor Mythos. But I am hoping there is more to Dennings charecter. Like a shape changer from another realm. I doubt it would be Enchantress, as I don’t see Denning playing her.

      • If it highlights Kat Denning´s boobs, I´m all for it.

BTW, you might wanna tell me your real name, so I can add you on FB. I think that we could have some interesting conversations. If you don´t wanna post your real name on here, you can add me instead. Just keep looking for

        Dirk Antosch

        • me? or Aaron? Because, you were already a fan of my Facebook blog page at one point.

  9. This movie, along with iron man 3, is my most anticipated of phase 2! I hope they introduce amora the enchantress and skurge the executioner. This could lead to masters of evil for avengers 2, which im hoping for, and Thanos will be used for avengers 3 and maybe beyond! I mean he is a giant galactic threat and it took almost the whole marvel universe to stop him. But Im thinking for masters of evil also might include Mandarin, Radioactive Man (if they use him at the end credits scene of iron man 3 along with hank pym which is all speculative) baron zemo if introduced in captain america winter soldier since he did form the masters of evil, the abomination, the leader, and ultron since he had an incarnation also and plus hes awesome. If Hank Pym can make appearances in all the phase 2 movies maybe, then hopefully they’ll have him slowly building Ultron and then in the avengers 2 he can turn on them and join the masters of evil. But of course he’ll prob have something cooking up his sleeve that baron zemo doesnt kno about, and he breaks away to fight the avengers on his own while the masters of evil do also

  10. Mark my words, the Marauders are under Loki’s control. Internal to the production they are known as Loki’s marauders and the battle with them culminates in a huge scrap outside Buckingham Palace in London where Thor’s hammer smahes through one of its famous stone columns. of course they end up incarcerated!

  11. Hmmm I still have a theory that Beta-Ray Bill might show up, but that is my own personal hope……

  12. I think that Christopher Eccleston costume is great. He is such a great actor. I know he will be great in this. Great looking guy.

  13. Thor 2 & Iron Man 3 are easily the most anticipated superhero/comicbook movies of 2013 IMO. I can’t wait! The more I hear of these two movies, the more exciting they sound. I think we’re going to get a lot deeper into the Marvel universe than we thing this year! I can’t wait.

I completely agree, Hemsworth is Thor as RDJ is Iron Man, no doubt.

  14. I really hope this movie kicks A$$, and really gets in the world of Thor!
He better wear his helmet a little more as well, C-MON that is one of his most recognzable ??? besides Mjolnir of course! actually I think more people ould recognize the helmet before the hammer.

This looks tobe a great year for movies! I cant wait, IM3, Star Trek, MOS, Thor TDW, DAMn I cant wait!!!

    • Hi Screenrant staff, Thanks for all of the scoops and news. Please when any of you guys go to ComiCon this year, please ask Kevin Feige or Chris Hemsworth why does he keep NOT wearing his iconic helmet. Please.

  15. That is truly cool that the marauders will be in thor:the dark world and they are loki new army that try to freee him from his imprisomment in asgard and unde control by malekinth and surtur fire demon and thor;the dark world will be the best marvel movies for 2013.

  16. Aren’t the Marauders a group from X-Men lead by Mister Sinister? Is Marvel/Disney being sly and using this name so FOX can’t use it in their universe?

    • CMB actually says it’s “The Maraunders” – with an “n.”

      So who knows, lol.

      • Yeah, the original set visit photos and video referred to them as The Marauders. So I’m pretty sure that’s a typo – though you never know with Marvel!

    • The name brought them to mind for me as well but I think there’s ZERO chance that’s what Marvel is doing. Marvel Studios either has the rights to those characters or they don’t (in some cases they don’t) and it wouldn’t do them any good to throw them in – because Fox wouldn’t be able to use them anyway.

Plus, they’d be a major stretch in terms of how they’d fit into this Thor story and have very little to do with the larger phase two plot. More likely, the Thor 2 filmmakers are just using the term Marauders as a blanket name for an army that, as their name suggests, marauds and pillages the nine realms.

The set photos in particular make it hard to imagine that they’re tying in X-Men enemies.

      • I assumed Marvel wouldn’t be doing that. But a fan can dream about seeing Mister Sinister at some point in one of these movie universes.

      • The Marauders did fight Thor in their first appearance, when he was a part of X-Force, as a rag-tag, military like group of mutant assassins. One of their main shticks seems to be dying and coming back to life, and one of their major stories features a demonic invasion of earth. I suspect that the film version of them will display at least some of these elements. Obviously, they can’t be mutants due to the X-Men rights being held by Fox, but it should be very easy to do a storyline about an army of alien, rather than mutant, Marauders who seem to be impossible to kill.

    • They are the sewer mutants. Pretty bad if you are at the bottom of the mutant barrel. They are hopping on the short bus to Asgard.

      • That’s the Morlocks not Marauders

        • I think I’m going to start cutting myself to feel alive again.

  17. I hope thi movie shows or explains Thor’s real power, strength and speed, not just being the God of Thunder and lightening.

    • And explain the Warrior MAdneess and when or if he acquires the Odinforce.

  18. What if the Guardians of the Galaxy movie is there to show the Power of Thanos, what if the movie is based on Thanos completely obliterating the GOTG, showing the power or true power of Thanos and drawing Shield’s attention to Thanos

  19. Sounds good. Cant wait.

  20. I’ve been sold on this movie since I found out Christopher Eccelston was in it. I loved him in Doctor Who!

    • I think he is fantastic. He is my Doctor Who. He really is a great actor and I know he will be good in this.

  21. Loki has employed random races of the 9 realms to help him take over Asgard before in the comics.

  22. I’m thinking maybe Thanos is behind all of this. And hes sending all these army’s in to get the infinity gauntlet.. since we did see it in thor 1

    • right think about it. we will find out that loki is behind everything in thor 2 and what happened in avengers 1 ( other then the part of them sending a nuke back threw the worm hole ) was planed by thanos. thanos had loki get the cosmic back to asgard. thanos had loki trick the dark elvis and the other villians to attach asgard so thor had to release loki. then loki could escape and get the comsic cub and the infinity gaulent. loki only is able to secure the comsic cub . then at the end of avenger 2 after all the credits and jokes are dune we get a 15 minute fight of odin vs thanos. with thanos killing odin and getting the infinity gauntlet setting up avengers 3

  23. I think Christopher Eccleston is fantastic!

  24. I am so hyped for this movie. I cannot wait to see this. No words how excited I am. These new details sound amazing.

Sometimes I just can’t decide which Phase 2 movie makes me the most excited. I heard that the first trailer comes out in April, so yay. :D

  25. Sally, do you like Christopher Eccleston? :D

    • Yes I do! I saw him in Doctor Who and I really like him. He looks like such a nice guy.

  26. I look forward to the Thor sequel. I however think that the costume for Malekith in the abvove the image looks a bit weak. (not to nit pick…lol) I recon we will have to wait for future images and the movie itself to see for certain.

  27. Sooooo excited for this! And you guys are right….Chris Hemsworth is Thor, just like RDJ is Iron Man, and Christopher Reeve is Superman.

  28. Thor The Dark World is going to be Marvel’s masterpiece. With Alan Taylor bringing a more Viking feel to Asgard, with Maliketh setting the table for Surtur in Thor 3, and with Thanos stealing the Infinity Gauntlet, Thor obviously is going to bring one heck of a story and at the same time set the table for the second Avengers movie. Of course, the latter is pure speculation on my part, but somehow it just makes sense.

    Definitely looking forward to November…
