Back in 1993, I used to subscribe to a mainstream movie magazine, which nowadays is available online only. Back then I remember there was a column about rumors and inside info on productions that were being worked on at the time. John Carter of Mars was one of them. Back then it was called “The Princess of Mars”. The studios back then were not too eager to make sci-fi adventures in an often manner like we see today. So the major studio who had the rights to the novel’s adaptation would only green light this movie if two huge stars were attached. These were Tom Cruise and Julia Roberts.

I guess that since tTom and Julie were not interested, the film went to development hell until now.

So far so good.
I am looking forward to this.

I’m looking forward to this as well. I wasn’t impressed with the casting thus far, but Church isn’t a bad choice. I just hope they use the old marvel comics as reference points.

@ JalexM,

Very interesting… John Carter of Mars’ first appearance was in Edgar Rice Burroughs’ novel, ‘A Princess of Mars’

To your other point, Tom Cruise apparently was interested in the project and met with Disney about doing a trilogy of films (likely, this project) – Not sure how long that was ago before he dropped out.
