A green-band teaser trailer for The Watch premiered last night on Conan, and is now online. The sci-fi comedy sees a pack of male adult suburbanites (Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Jonah Hill and Richard Ayoade) form a neighborhood watch group as an excuse to to spend time away from their families. The scheme goes fine – until “The Watch” uncovers a real alien invasion conspiracy and have to truly serve and protect the public.
Just a few weeks ago, Fox released a red-band trailer for The Watch – which previously went under the title Neighborhood Watch. While the latest theatrical promo forgoes its predecessor’s naughtier jokes, the marketing line remains unchanged.
Given the current controversy over the shooting of Florida teen Trayvon Martin, the idea of a movie where, say, Jonah Hill casually points finger-guns at young children while passing by (as happens in the first Watch promo) suddenly seems really insensitive. However, a bunch of grown men accidentally blowing up a cow, by using alien technology – shown in the latest trailer – that’s just good wacky fun… right?
So far, The Watch gives off a similar vibe as every other film written by Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen to date (Superbad, Pineapple Express, Green Hornet). We see familiar elements like the man-child characters, raunchy dialogue – and the mix of violence and humor, which is geared more towards an adult audience.
Of course, the question is: Does The Watch look fun – or feel tired?
Fans of Ayoade’s work on The IT Crowd are happy to see the actor finally appear in a mainstream Hollywood comedy; otherwise, buzz around The Watch is weak. Maybe director Akiva Schaffer (Hot Rod) will help liven things up, so the film plays out less like recent solo offerings from Stiller (Little Fockers) and Vaughn (The Dilemma) – and more like Hill’s most recent movie, 21 Jump Street (emphasis on maybe).
The Watch arrives in theaters around the U.S. on July 27th, 2012.
