Finally, there is some good news out of last year’s smash hit The Walking Dead. What will surely be to the delight of fans, AMC has announced that the The Walking Dead season 2 premiere on October 16th will be a super-sized 90 minute episode. The network also announced the schedule for the  remaining 12-episode season.

AMC will air the following six episodes weekly in The Walking Dead‘s 9PM Sunday night slot. After a holiday break (zombies make lamentable house guests) the second half of the season will begin on February 12th. International viewers in most countries can catch the premiere on between one and seven days after the US premiere.

The extra run time echoes last year’s Halloween pilot, which scored over five million live viewers, making The Walking Dead AMC’s most successful premiere ever. Viewership improved across the first season’s six episodes, and a second batch was ordered almost immediately. The extra run-time should help soften the nearly year-long wait fans have been enduring since early December.

There have been serious shake-ups with The Walking Dead‘s writing and production staff, including showrunner Frank Darabont, who has been replaced by producer Glen Mazzara, reportedly due to fiercly conservative budgeting by AMC. The show is AMC’s first wholly owned venture (their previous originals Mad Men, Breaking Bad and Rubicon were created with the help of outside production companies), and the network slashed the budget for the series by 25% while ordering more than twice the episodes.

Despite the setbacks, viewer anticipation has reached a fever pitch. The San Diego Comic-Con panel (just a few days before Darabont’s departure) played to an audience of thousands, and featured the premiere of the The Walking Dead season 2 trailer.

While The Walking Dead season 1 had a few marked departures from the show’s comic book progenitor, we know that its sophomore season will feature some iconic scenes from the source material. Readers will recognize Hershel (played by Scott Wilson) and his farm from a brief glimpse at the end of the full trailer, and you can see what may (or may not) be the jail in one of the four teaser videos released since.

The Walking Dead season 2 lurches back on to AMC at 9PM on October 16th.

  1. cant frikin wait !! just 1 more month to go!!

  2. So pumped!

  3. I don’t start College til the January and decent thing too, especially with This, New Girl, Last Ssason of Chuck and HIMYM on tv

    • If you have Comcast, the pilot episode of “New Girl” has already been placed “On Demand”. For me, it wasn’t very good; one or two small laughs.

      • Sadly I don’t have Comcast, I’ll have to wait til the 20th. I’ll probably end up enjoying it, Im a big fan of Zooey Deschanel

        • Yeah, this was one of the few shows I had on my list to watch. Pilots are not always the best way to judge a new series, so I will watch the second episode.

          I hope you enjoy it.

  4. Seems like yesterday I watched the last ep of seaon 1. Plus Dexter and Sons to watch. Brilliant!

  5. Bring it on!!!
Its gone sooo quickly…which means another good thing…World War Z is imminent!

  6. Just watched season 1 on Blu-ray, I can’t wait for the season premier of the walking dead on October 16 this show is awesome :)

  7. I still have a bad feeling about this, like I have for every series where the studios meddled by replacing key people and cutting the budget. It has never gone well and the quality has suffered.

  8. What the heck is wrong with AMC. Cutting the budget that much with the success they had is moronic, and now they lost frank. This show had such potential. aMC is screwing up big time. There going to mess everything up. Too bad it wasn’t on Hbo.

    • yeah and i aint gonna watch it either now.

  9. Actually, the episodes after #6 in season 1 were ordered before the premiere.

  10. Cant wait, last season was great now excited for season 2!

  11. God I can’t wait for this to come out!!:D It seems like I have waited for so long for this and its hard to believe its only one more month until it starts again:D

  12. Raggy rook, ROMBIES!

  13. There’s no need for anyone to have anguish for season 2. The budget cut may help out! Remember ROMERO’S original “Night of the Living Dead” had nothing in the way of budget, and it started it all!!! I’m also glad they’ve replaced a writer, some season 1 episodes were boring. They need to bring back Michael Rooker(have him be the leader)and keep those zombies forcing the survivors to adapt. It would be nice if there was an episode similar to the 1991 remake of “Night of the Living Dead”(boarding up windows and doors). Romero proved that back story and character development are not necessary for a good zombie experience.

  14. 3 DAYS!!!! i am barley jumping out of my skin, so excited lol

  15. Didn’t get to catch the premiere of season 2 but season 1 was addictive. I stayed watching it. I thought the show would be wack like every other zombie show but it changed my perspective of zombie movie/shows. This is a must see. I hope season 2 is even better than the 1st.

  16. 90 minutes?! Without commercials, the season opener only runs for 66 minutes!!!

  17. Its been a long time since I got interested in a new Horror Story. Realistic! You can really imagine this Zombie Plague happing. First season keep me on the edge of my seat. Couldn’t wait another week for more. But this season is losing that touch. Very little action. They’re dragging out the boring scenes. Too much Character relations going on. 1st episode 2nd season, Was good because I waited so long for it to get here but each episode thereafter is going down hill. I’m hearing something about budget cuts? Could that be whats going on with the Quality and Suspense?

  18. I wana watch it

  19. I love the Walking Dead!! I like the personel contact between the people. I think it makes it more interesting. You develope a liking to the people and root for them to win against the Zombie’s!!! Keep up the good work!! I can’t wait to see more and more and more of the show. I wish it was on more then once a week. I would like to see it on atleast twice a week???? I love the show so much.I didn’t get to see it from the beginning but my friend told me about it and I at first said I don’t want to watch another Zombie movie their all the same. (NO PLOT) but, this show has it all. I would like to see more of them interacting with one another. More love scenes between the people. I love them all so much. I did hate that Dean or the old man with the camper died though. I like him a lot. I wish he would have lived. I am glad that the women he liked maybe ends up living. I won’t know for sure until the next season starts up!!!! Bring it on, I’m ready NOW!!!!! Thanks for such a good story line and all. Loves and Hugs to all the peope involved in the making of the show!!! Tina M. Reese!!1
