Though we told you so in our official review, The Walking Dead is now officially a hit. The ratings for the show’s premiere episode were the highest debut in the history of AMC TV – bigger than Mad Men or Breaking Bad.

The show also had the largest cable television debut this year amongst the 18 – 49 demographic (3.3 million) – meaning that The Walking Dead is a hit amongst the target demographics that programmers especially covet. And, if these ratings hold, you can bet that a second season of The Walking Dead will be announced shortly.

Here are the official numbers: The Walking Dead scared up 5.3 million viewers for its 10pm hour-and-a-half premiere, with another 3 million tuning in for the encore presentation. Even without all the DVR figures – and you know there were a significant amount of people out for the Halloween holiday who recorded the show to watch later – that’s still 8 million viewers who caught The Walking Dead on its premiere night. A significant number of female viewers even turned out for the mix of drama and mayhem, capping early concerns about the show’s appeal.

Needless to say, Walking Dead comic book creator Robert Kirkman and show creator Frank Darabont are pretty happy right now, and so is AMC. Said AMC president Charlie Collier:

“It’s a good day to be dead. We are so proud of this series, its depth of storytelling and the remarkable talent attached…As the network dedicated to bringing viewers the best stories on television, we are so pleased to have the opportunity with The Walking Dead to raise the bar within this popular genre and continue our commitment to being the home of premium television on basic cable.”

HBO, you better watch your back!

All flame-fanning aside, I do have to say that I’m pleased with The Walking Dead (see my review HERE) and between this show and HBO’s Boardwalk Empire I can confidently say that my Sunday nights are back to the level they fell from after shows like The Sopranos and The Wire bowed out. Indeed, my weekends are going to be ending on a good note for the foreseeable future.

walking dead season 2 The Walking Dead Finds Ratings Life; Second Season Likely

As for The Walking Dead season 2? We heard a rumor awhile back that AMC had already renewed the show for a second season, but as recently as the NY Comic-Con, Darabont and show producer Gale Anne Hurd were animate about the fact that they were squarely focused on promoting this first season at the moment. Of course, now that the show is up and not just walking, but running, I would expect The Walking Dead season 2 rumors are pretty imminent to becoming a reality.

However, never one to leave great things to the hand of chance, below is a video preview of the rest of The Walking Dead‘s first season. Hopefully it will serve as an incentive to keep you watching and keep those ratings high – I want my season 2!

Catch The Walking Dead Sundays @ 10/9c on AMC.

  1. I thought you guys already broke the story here of it already being picked up for a second season? This show deserves all the praise everyones been giving it.

    • That was a rumor.

  2. This show was awesome. Haven’t been excited for a show like this since LOST ended.

  3. ya the cinematography in that show was amazing and the directing superb, I will be back every sunday.

  4. That show scared the crap out of me!

    Awesome production quality!

    I loved it!

  5. I’m happy a good number of females tuned in cause I know so many women that read the comic so I’m glad its spreading more. The story and characters are so well developed. Does anyone if we’re seeing tyreese or michonne

    • This season I meant

      • I doubt it, I think they will end the season with them leaving Atlanta(after you know who gets killed). I think they will find Tyrese and his family and the farm in the second season(the finale finding the prison). That is if they keep the 6 episode season format.

  6. The walking dead exceeded my expectations I knew from watching the tv spots that it was gonna be an awesome show but compared to some of the big screen zombie films this series tops any movie out there I’ll definatly be watching every Sunday season 2 oh yea it’s coming 

  7. I was really impressed. I don’t really like Zombie movies all that much but this looks like it is going to shape up into something special. I felt horrible for the man with the sniper rifle. That would be a horrible decision to make. For some guys. :)

    • Hey now! I would hope my wife would have no issue taking me out. I look at it as a travesty to ones humanity to be walking around like that.

Granted after the shot I would eventually give her a proper burial when it was safe and not just leave her out there.

      Sometimes dead is better. :D

  8. i’m from india..and i have been waiting for this for 6-7 months now.. although we don’t get AMC here.. i still caught the first episode (thanks to you know what :P ) .. and it was frikkin brilliant… i’m a very very big zombie genre fan.. and a TV series on this genre is just the best thing ever.. now we dont have to rush into everything.. :D

p.s- i am still looking forward to rage virus destruction in ’28 months later’ ;)

  9. LOVED The Walking Dead!!! Keep them coming!

I wish the Networks would commit to a series from the beginning. 6 episodes is not enough to develop a fan base. Especially, with long breaks between airings. Take a look at SyFy’s abysmal failure with their attempts at original series. Long hiatus’s and poor time slot placement has killed many good shows.

  10. My mom and dad watched this too. my mom is in her late 50′s and my dad is in his early 60′s and they both loved the show. The guy that lives next door to be is 65 and he loves the show. Everyone I know keeps asking me when is the walking dead coming back on the air. So the age range doesn’t end at. I have a friend that works at a nursing home and even the people living their love the show. I wasn’t watching it the night it came out. I was watching the show on comcast on demand the next day. working the night it’s on sucks. I just wonder if comcast keeps track of how many times people watch a show on demand.
