The Walking Dead is heading into season 7 next month and fans have been held in an agonizing state of suspended animation. Last season ended on a daring and dramatic cliffhanger, that left millions of viewers waiting to see who ends up on the receiving end of Negan’s lethal bat. The showrunner’s unconventional decision sparked one of the biggest controversies of the series’ long run.
Well, there is a little over a month until the series returns to AMC and the cast and crew are currently busy filming the upcoming season. The Walking Dead has earned its reputation over the years as one of the most intense shows on television. However, that doesn’t stop the cast from keeping their sense of humor as soon as cameras stop rolling.
Actor Norman Reedus, who plays Darryl Dixon, is known for his fan interaction and sense of humor. He recently took to Instagram to show off a behind-the-scenes photo, featuring a very recognizable face.
Last season, producer and special effects wizard Greg Nicotero’s team designed three disembodied heads for a sequence in the season’s twelfth episode, ‘Not Tomorrow Yet.‘ In the scene, the survivors attempt to use a head in order to gain access into Negan’s camp. (You had to be there…) While, the real-life identities seemed innocuous at the time, there was a big-time cameo in that episode. In a March interview with EW, Nicotero explained further:
“One of the other heads, I don’t know if I’m going to get in trouble if I say this, was Johnny Depp. I think we had sculpted an emaciated version of a dummy head for something and we used Johnny Depp’s head as a basis just for a clay sculpt. I can’t remember who the third one is, but I’m in good company. Norman kept saying he wanted the heads when we were done shooting.”
Apparently, from the photo he shared, it looks what Norman Reedus wants, Norman Reedus gets. It’s still not clear how Depp feels about his likeness being used in the show, much less floating around the actor’s trailer. But it’s easy to imagine that he would be entertained by the bizarre nature of it all. After all, if Depp weren’t such a big name, he would fit right into the world of The Walking Dead. In fact, many have claimed that Frank Dillane, star of Fear the Walking Dead, has a similar presence to a young Depp in A Nightmare on Elm Street. So sometimes things come full circle.
It’s unclear if there is a hidden message behind the Instagram post, but it’s hard to not laugh at the absurdity. If you look even closer, there are even more mysteries to uncover in the photo. Such as, who signed the Pink Panther? Is that really the Pink Panther’s tail wrapped all the way to front? And what are the disembodied head of Depp and the Pink Panther doing in the room together? At least we can all take our minds off of who Negan killed for a little while.
The Walking Dead season 7 premieres Sunday, October 23, 2016 @9pm on AMC.
