The Tourist1 The Tourist Trailer Mixes Action, Mystery, Depp & Jolie

The first trailer for The Tourist, starring Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp, is now online and ready for your  scrutiny.

The film was helmed by German Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, who won many awards for his acclaimed film The Lives of Others. With The Tourist, Donnersmarck looks to be making his big splash in Hollywood, with two of the biggest A-list stars on the planet helping him do it.

If you don’t know much about The Tourist, check out a synopsis for the movie below – BE WARNED, the synopsis has certain SPOILERS that aren’t necessarily revealed in this first trailer (but they’re not exactly secrets either):

The Tourist is a remake of the 2005 French thriller “Anthony Zimmer.” The thriller concerns an American tourist (Johnny Depp) who finds his life in danger when a female Interpol agent (Angelina Jolie) uses him as a dupe to flush out an elusive criminal with whom she once had an affair.

OK, so I’ve got to say this first trailer makes this film seem like a retread of so many other films I’ve already seen before (and that’s ignoring the fact that it’s a remake). Jolie seems to be reprising the same role she played this past summer in Salt, while Depp’s wide-eyed antics and humor certainly have a hint of Captain Jack Sparrow.

But let’s be honest:  this film has two of the biggest stars in the world, gorgeous European set pieces, action, mystery, and a hefty dose of sex appeal…it’s not exactly going to have a hard time attracting an audience. All I’m saying is that my parents will probably be out to the theater to catch this long before I will.

The Tourist will be in theaters on December 10th. Read more about it and many other movies coming out in the latter half of this year in our 2010 Fall Movie Preview.

  1. Paul Bettany seals it for me.

  2. It is hard to deny the attraction of the star wattage for this film.
Even if it is just okay it should still be entertaining which
puts it ahead of most of this years films.

  3. “while Depp’s wide-eyed antics and humor certainly have a hint of Captain Jack Sparrow.”

    • I agree… Depp is not acting like Jack Sparrow in this trailer.

  4. While I sensed absolutely no sexual chemistry between Depp and Jolie, I’m with anthony… Paul Bettany definitely makes up for that lack of feeling. I’m not a big Jolie fan to begin with but I’ve missed Johnny Depp. I’m not a huge fan of the last two “Pirate” movies and I didn’t like “Alice in Wonderland” and “The Run Diary” doesn’t come out for another year at least. This will curb the aching of my Depp loss.

  5. HA! “you look ravenous” brilliant!

  6. Looks extremely fun; definitely on my list to see this year.

  7. Johnny Depp rarely makes a bad movie. even when the movie is bad, you still have to give him credit for being pretty good. Jolie is like Depp in a way where she can play action, and drama both well.

Paul Bettany is such an underappreciated actor. and Timothy Dalton is also in this so thats another plus.

film looks like it could go either way, good or forgettable. but it’s defiately worth checking out when it hits theaters

  8. Is she just reprising her role in Wanted? Looks like it.

  9. Well… I guess I could enjoy just about everything in this film to be honest and yet I would hate to think it over played as far as characters go. From what everyone is saying and what I am seeing in this trailer these characters are all architypes which we see in these action romance films even if the European setting makes it a timeless study.

I do like the humor that Depp is putting in and wonder if he possibly decided upon a Mark Twain/Samuel Clemens sort of persona to provide the adventure and believability twist. As for the sexual chemistry which the tabloids have been splashing up over the past month, I would have to agree that it is not there as I had expected it to be. Is it possible that we are seeing the ‘wooden wanted calculation of Angelina’ or ‘the adventurous simple guy who is really along for the ride kind of Depp’ come into a neutral zone? Hard to say unless we watch the entire film.

There is something off in the timing of the dynamics if you ask me… Bettany might just make the film after all. Who wants to bet that he is the real love interest in this Venice Love Triangle? Depp is sporting way too much humor for Bettany not to play off of it somewhere down the line but then again I didnt see the original so I really cant speak to the history of the characters or the flavor of the storyline.

Its going to be a great film to get those seldom seen relatives out to the theatre to see because it certainly does offer something for everyone in an upscale kind of way. Classic?? not really but fun and possibly a bit of a mystery to be certain. (provided of course that lawmakers dont go off the deep end with all of their insanity…)

  10. Maybe Depp is just feeling his awesomeness too… in all honesty… Jolie has so much going on I would think that she can barely keep a pound on for all the close scrutiny that she uses to maintain her edge.

  11. Great to see Steven Berkoff as the villain!

  12. Are you for real with that trailer review? Johnny acting like Jack Sparrow? You’ve got to be kidding me. And Angelina reprising her role in SALT? Have you even seen it? The only similarity is that this is a spy movie. It looks and feels completely different. This looks like its light, brisk and fun.

Probably the worst trailer review I’ve ever read.

    • Hey Fresh,

Don’t hold back, yo – tell us how you REALLY feel.
