Johnny Depp Replacing Sam Worthington In ‘The Tourist?’

Published 4 years ago by , Updated August 22nd, 2013 at 7:15 pm,

When does the movie business ever go as planned? Rarely, it seems, as evidenced by the change-ups with the upcoming thriller The Tourist, the remake of the 2005 French film, Anthony Zimmer.

We recently reported that Angelina Jolie had replaced Charlize Theron in the movie, with Jolie joining the already-cast Sam Worthington (who originally replaced Tom Cruise). Then a week later came news that after previously attached director Bharat Nalluri had stepped away from the project, The Lives of Other director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck was being eyed to helm the film instead.

All seemed to be in place and The Tourist was set for an early 2010 shooting start. However, although the latter is still true, there appears to STILL be major change-ups happening, as not only is yet another new director being looked at to now replace Donnersmarck, but Worthington may be getting replaced by Johnny Depp!

Variety is reporting that both Donnersmarck and Worthington have left The Tourist over “creative differences” (isn’t that always the “insert here” reason?). Depp is now in talks to play the titular American tourist who is drawn into a web of intrigue by a female Interpol agent (Jolie) who is attempting to locate a criminal who was once her lover. GK’s Graham King – who’s distributing and financing through his deal with Sony Picture Entertainment – brought Depp into the mix as he has a strong relationship with him after collaborating on Rango and The Rum Diary.

Many people were expecting Pirates of the Caribbean 4: On Stranger Tides to be Depp’s next film, which is supposed to start filming next Spring. So where does that leave Captain Jack Sparrow?…

On top of the casting replacement, there’s also the need for a new director. One name that Variety specifically points out is Alfonso Cuaron, the man behind such films as Children of Men and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (my personal favorite Harry Potter, FYI).¬† He’s not in talks officially, but is “circling” the project along with a few other directors.

I don’t know why there’s been so many change-ups with The Tourist, but if Depp signs on it’s certainly a step-up in terms of star power from Worthington. Even if the latter is a rising star – with Terminator Salvation, the upcoming Avatar and the upcoming Clash of the Titans now on his resume – Depp is a bankable name and him teaming up with Jolie (who you can see in the recent trailer for Salt), one of the hottest¬† female movie stars in the world, can only draw major attention to the project from people who probably wouldn’t have been interested otherwise.

Hopefully everything gets sorted out with The Tourist for its early 2010 shooting start. We’ll keep you posted on the status of the project.

What do you think of Johnny Depp potentially replacing Sam Worthington as The Tourist? Do you think the team up of Depp and Angelina Jolie will draw in a lot more viewers than her and Worthington would have? Which director would you like to see take on the project?

If all goes to plan, The Tourist will start filming in February 2010, and is set for a release sometime in 2011.

  1. Johnny Depp is definitely a big step up from Sam Worthington. Worthington isn’t a BAD actor, but he’s definitely not nearly as impressive as Depp, and not as popular either. I’m not a big Angelina Jolie fan, but with Johnny Depp by her side…. This might actually be good. People are going to want to see this with these two in it. They are 2 of the most recognized names in the business! I’m not sure if I’m completely sold on it yet, but once I see a trailer for it I should have a better opinion.

  2. It’s funny how it was only a short time ago where Tim Burton and Johnny Depp both informed the media that their next shooting project was going to be “Dark Shadows” and said film is nowhere on their resoective radars.

  3. There is no way at all that johnny depp would just ditch pirates of the caribbean: on stranger tides!, theres just no way what so ever!. Those other movies mentioned in this article will have wait because Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is the number 1 movie on Johnny Depp’s “To Do” list and he even showed everyone that list on an mtv movie interview video not to long ago!!!. So if anything!, the fact that websites are saying that he is doing some other movie first, before pirates 4, those websites are completely incorrect!. They don’t know what they are saying, is actually wronge!!! =/……………

    • He better not ditch Pirates cause they’re filmin it on my home island in Hawaii and im on a mission to meet him =)

  4. In some ways, it doesn’t surprise me the director has changed. I’ve seen it happen when small projects attract major talent and suddenly the studio gets nervous and hires a “name,” experienced director.

  5. I don’t see Johnny doing a movie like this. For some reason this seems like a movie he wouldn’t normally do and not just because Burton isn’t the director. I’m not expecting him to do this movie.

  6. He is gonna be doing pirates 4 not The Tourist!!!!!.

  7. …it will all be in th’ scheduling…..

  8. I love Angelina…I don’t, beleive it or not, watch a lot of Depp movies because I am not a big science fiction, fictional kids film person…The Tourist would be one of the first non fictional type movies for Depp and I would like to see him play that type of part for once.,,instead of all the children fantasy world stuff lets see him play a regular sexy man in the today 2010 setting! I think it would be a huge hit with him in it…I think Worthington is hot but Depp would bring another level of interest for me and I thing a lot of people.

  9. I would prefer Sam Worthington in this movie. I’m not a Johnny Depp fan. I think he’s one of the most overrated actors working today.

    • Are you insane??!! He is the only one in “Hollywierd” that
      can actually act.

  10. NOOOOOOOO!!!! Jolie is a home wrecking B*tch!!!! I love Johnny, I’d love to see him in more movies, but not with her.!!!!

  11. Ahhh when ever i see this man i orgasm…. but Depp is a great actor and i would love to see some Depp and Pitt battle off…..

Obviously you are not inetrested in movies but just peoples personal life. Grow up. Angelina Jolie is an excellent actress and I couldn’t care who she sleeps with. It’s her business.

  13. Sam Worthington is an amazing actor. He has done so many awesome Aussie films it would be great to see him in this film. I'm a huge Depp fan and more Depp screen time the better for me….But with Ange…not so sure. Just Jealous I guess. Sam is great and I would love to see him with Ange…See if he stands up because she is very talented ….

  15. Oh oh!!!! The other shoe is starting to fall for Mr. Worthington.. I think the cat is out of the bag when it comes to his acting skills. Studios gave him a couple passes– a couple Mulligans….. But the fans complaints and the studios not doing as good as they wanted to is starting to make them take notice. oh oh!!

I think there is hope for Worthington though, as long as he has the look and he has the marketable name. All he needs is to take some polishing on his acting skills! I think he has a presence so that can't be taught. But he needs an injection of some emotion and character. In that regard–he's actually the opposite of Johnny Depp come to think of it!!!!

Depp brings a charisma, a different flavor for every role he takes. In his roles he brings a 'je ne sais quoi'. Like when he did the Pirate, he struggled with the studio when he first came back to them totally reworking the costume of the pirate, putting beads and lil dreads on him etc. They were like “NO NO NO NO” and he was like “YES YES YES” and they were like “WHATEVER DUDE” and he was like “I THOUGHT SO MO FOS” and now its one of the biggest franchises in movies!– ((to describe the exchange in a very simple manner..lol)))

I don't see Sam having that kind of vision.- but he can hit the drawing board a bit going back to school and giving his characters for example different mannerisms, falling into a different place instead of “Worthington playing so and so.” He can still reinvent himself.
