Disney has released an international trailer for the live-action version of The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, which stars Nic Cage, Jay Baruchel (Tropic Thunder) and Alfred Molina (Spider-Man 2).
If you haven’t guessed from the title, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice is a re-imagining of the famous Disney animated segment from Fantasia.
In this new version, Cage plays a sorcerer named Balthazar Blake, who recruits mild-mannered Dave Stutler (Baruchel) as a reluctant protégé to help him defend Manhattan from the dark wizard Maxim Horvath (Monlina).
We saw The Sorcerer’s Apprentice teaser trailer back in December, and despite some early jitters (Nic Cage in another faux hairpiece? Red alert!) the movie actually looked…fairly entertaining. Fast-forward to today, and Cage is earning some praise for his hilarious role in Kick-Ass, Jay Baruchel is becoming something of a breakout star (She’s Out of My League, How To Train Your Dragon) and Molina is as respectable as ever.
Suddenly The Sorcerer’s Apprentice is looking like it might be a hit. But don’t believe my words, judge for yourself:
Our friends over at /Film claim that they’ve heard through the grapevine that this movie is actually pretty good. Can it be true? Can Nic Cage still work his magic as a leading man – especially while working under his National Treasure director, Jon Turteltaub? Guess we’ll find out soon.
The Sorcerer’s Apprentice will cast its spell over theaters on July 16, 2010.
