The live action/animation mix doesn't bother me too much, though I've never been too happy with the idea that it takes place in a modern setting. I'd far prefer to see it take place in its original setting. That said, I didn't know that Gargamel would be in it & I couldn't think of a better person to play to the part than Hank Azaria. Really, the entire cast has grabbed my attention.

If Gargamel is there, I think there's some hope. Unless he found some way to give himself immortality or to extend his life, I have to wonder how he & the smurfs came to be in a contemporary setting, halfway around the world. Was it a magic spell gone wrong (or right)? If so, who was casting it? Gargamel would be an easy explaination, but it would also be perfect if it were something that Papa Smurf was working on & Brainy goofed up while showing off. Or perhaps an even more elaborate series of blunders on the part of various smurfs, all appropriate to their personalities, leading to their journey to the world of today. It would be a humorous & wonderful homage to the show. I haven't been paying too close attention, so I don't know if any of this has already been answered.

Either way, with this casting news I've gone from sadly shaking my head to cautiously optimistic. This could work. Though I'd still rather see a story that includes Johan & Peewit.
