Rumor Patrol: Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson to Play a DC Comics Superhero?

The Rock in DC Comics Movie?

Now that Marvel’s The Avengers recently crossed $1 billion at the worldwide box office, many have been wondering if this success would spur DC Comics to intensify their film development. After all, outside of Batman (seen next in The Dark Knight Rises) and Superman (in Man of Steel), none of their heroes have made much cinematic impact lately – especially after Green Lantern fell-short of studio expectations.

That said, if Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is to be believed, another DC adventure may be closer than previously thought.

In response to a fan’s musing on Twitter - stating that Johnson should be cast as a DC hero (Gravedigger or John Stewart), the actor quickly responded with simple but cryptic tease:

Funny U say that.. RT: @krystal_burt:@ron2smoove I could see Rock playing in DC movies. Gravedigger or John Stewart (JL’s Green Lantern)

While there is no indication which (if any) character Johnson would play – or even if he is in talks for an actual role, the possibility of the wrestler-turned-actor starring as a DC character is not entirely unfounded. Back in 2009, rumors circulated that Johnson was in line to play the villainous role of Black Adam in director Peter Segal’s long-gestating adaptation of DC’s Shazam. Segal and Johnson previously worked together on 2008’s Get Smart.

However, Johnson could also potentially be up for a role in the Lobo film DC has in development with Journey 2: The Mysterious Island director Brad Peyton. That film has been in various states of development since Guy Ritchie passed on helping the project – to make Sherlock Holmes instead.

Dwayne The Rock Johnson as Luke Hobbs in Fast Five

Should Warner Bros. cast Johnson in one of their DC adaptations, they would be hard-pressed to find a star with as glowing a track record. In just the last year or so, Johnson has revitalized audience interest in three franchises with his roles in Fast Five, Journey 2 and the much-anticipated G.I. Joe: Retaliation.

A DC film would also not be Johnson’s first foray into comic book films. He is already signed to appear in the film version of upcoming Oni Press graphic novel Ciudad and will star as the title character in an upcoming adaptation of Hercules: The Thracian War from Radical Publishing.

  1. Cyborg? Maybe

    • My thoughts exactly!

  2. I am so, so, SO sick of this guy.

    • Ok, but that doesn’t answer the question?

Agreed. Cyborg only guy who comes to mind?

  3. I think Rock would make a good Shazam MORE IMPORTANT I want Jason Momoa to play Lobo.

    • he’d have to beef up a little, he’s a little to lean, but otherwise yeah I could see that.

      • Jason Momoa not the Rock.

  4. Dwayne could make a decent Black Adam, but I can’t picture him as Captain Marvel.

  5. No one. DC will fail and The Rock will end up playing Sub-Mariner for Marvel.

  6. He would actually make a great Martian Manhunter if you ask me!

    • I always think of Dennis Haysbert from the car insurance commercials as the Martian. xD I think Phil Morris is a good fit as well.

  7. Black Phanthor

  8. he better not play john stewart, that’s the best green lantern character and needs to go to someone in the same acting bracket as idris elba

    • Totally agree with Idris Elba Playing John Stewart!! Fits Right In!!

      • screw idris elba

  9. Johnson already has a business relationship with Disney, who now owns Marvel so I could see Warner getting out bid if they want to put him in a comic book movie.

  10. hell be a excellent bishop from the x-men

  11. THE role of John Stewart should definitely be played by Micheal jai white now that would be sweet and the rock could be black atom why not

    • I see Michael Jai White as Luke Cage.

      • Terry Crews should be Luke Cage.

  12. Sad to say, I don’t actually think he fits any of the DC characters I’m familiar with – but I wouldn’t mind seeing him as Hawkman, lol.

  13. I think The Rock would make a great Luke Cage.

  14. with the rock’s charisma and comedic skills he’s best suited for the tone marvel cinematic universe are taking with their films. i’d say luke cage.

  15. Howsa bouta Black Adam? he would be perfect for that role.
juust ripping people apart with his hands like in the comics, and superman has to face him.

  16. Black Panther.. could be an anti hero in Captain America

  17. Black Panther is marvel this says he will be doing a dc comic. and i would rather see Idras Alba if thats how his name is spelled play Bishop he is a really good actor, and would really add some great character to the role, the rock i think is good at action, as Idras alba has better acting skills.

  18. Really, Black Adam? I can see him playing Cyborg as some of you have pointed out, maybe, only maybe as John Stewart (that of course, if a Green Lantern 2 ever happens, I don’t know if I would like to see him as John Stewart in a stand-alone movie, when we already have one GL that in my mind, was a great movie).

  19. No one mentionned here sorry….
john stewart : black dude (michael jay white would be great)
cyborg : same thing (michael b.jordan if we’re talking about the young guy in the new justice league)
martian manhunter same thing (dennis haybert)

sorry but the rock ‘s an oceanian.I guess he could have a shot to latinos character unfortunately except for the blue beetle (who is clearly a skinny teenager) and bane (he would have made a lot more sense than tom hardy I guess : he has a big frame and can be buffed without looking grotesque) there is not much latino either…

bottom line he doesn’t belong to the DC universe IMHO

  20. How about Lobo?

  21. I could see The Rock as Captain Marvel.

  22. I could see him play Darkside when WB eventually makes a Justice League movie.

  23. black superman

  24. Black Lighting?

  25. @ those of you who mentioned The Rock could play Black Panther:
Please go read a Black Panther comic book. The Black Panther is an AFRICAN (not half black/half Samoan) prince. He’s strong, but he’s also very ninja-like: very agile, very quick, very stealthy and also has a high level IQ – The Rock is none of those things (expect strong) and he would never be able to pull off a decent portrayal of T-Challa IMO… And before someone even considers the Rock for that role, they might as well look into hiring the footballer/soccer player Didier Drogba to do it instead.

As for Luke Cage, I disagree as well: while the Rock has a similar build to what a live action Luke Cage might have, The Rock doesn’t actually LOOK like Luke Cage though, and he doesn’t have the type of personality that Luke Cage has… even though Johnson is a good action star, I don’t think he’s a good enough actor to portray the Luke Cage from the comics.

*Sigh* Just had to get that out and vent a bit – I feel better now ;)
    Rant over.

    • psst…..I still think he could play Man-Ape (him or Kevin Grevioux)

      • Kevin Grevioux for Man-Ape

      • I didn’t know who Kevin Grevioux was, so I went and looked up his filmography and a few pics to see what he’s like…
After doing that, I can say with certainty that he’d be awesome for the role of Man-Ape.

        • u dont know Kevin Grevioux. anyway heres some extra info Kevin Grevioux is also screenwriter, and comic book writer. he worked with Marvel comics he created Blue Marvel for Marvel comics also he wrote New Warriors volume 4. also the new film coming out next I, Frankenstein is based on Kevin Grevioux comic book he also wrote the script of the movie.

          • Yeah, like i said, I did a search (the internet is a wonderful thing… ;) )

      • Kevin grevioux would be a great Luke Cage, he’d have to tighten up though, he was looking a little chunky in Rise of the Lycans.

    • The Rock doesnt look like Roadblock in GI Joe also. even both Terrence Howard and Don Cheadle dont look nothing like James “Rhodey” Rhodes. The Rock imo would be good for a Luke Cage movie if u look at his roles in Fast Five and Faster he has abit of Luke Cage about him. i would like Tery Crews to play Luke Cage but i doubt Marvel Studio would consider him plus he is getting old for the character.

the people who is saying The Rock could play Black Panther seem like they was joking. Black Panther is AFRICAN but we all know they wont cast a African for the role lol. Black Widow is Russian and she was played by an American lol :P . my choice for Black Panther are

      - Aldis Hodge
      - Anthony Mackie
      - Chiwetel Ejiofor
      - Adetomiwa Edun (Nigerian-British actor known for his role as Sir Elyan in the television show Merlin)

      • The fact is there are lots of talented, young black actors who could play the role. People just need to be willing to accept that an actual African actor might not be feasible. If an actor has talent they should be able to fake an African accent convincingly.

James C. Mathis III’s voice is a perfect match for Black Panther so if he can do it (and still be American) I’m sure there are others.

        • the only African actor everyone keep on mentioning is the same person all the time and thats Djimon Hounsou. Djimon Hounsou is a good actor but he is too old to play Black Panther also he is the most predictable African actor in Hollywood it seems like he is the only African actor in Hollywood.

      • You don’t NEED an African actor to play BP (I’ve never said that) – it would be for the best IMO, but it’s not necessary:
If they can get an actor that looks African and is in the right age group, is a good enough (and dedicated) actor who can pull off an accent and has the same physique as T-Challa, then it really doesn’t matter what nationality he really is.

I don’t really mind Scar Jo playing the Widow either since she does kinda look like her and she definitely showed that she can act in TA.. plus she’s hot ;) And her lack-of-an-accent can also kinda be explained by the fact that she’s been living in America for years (I know a lot of people who migrated to the US and UK and they all picked up the accents very quickly) plus, in TA she did speak Russian so they did show a bit more about the character’s nationality with that…

And as for Cheadle & Howard as Rodey: Rodey has changed many times during the comics (at one point he looked almost exactly like Howard, and lately, he has a resemblance to Cheadle as well) – secondary characters go through a lot more “cosmetic” changes than the main characters, so the fact that those actors don’t really resemble Rodey, doesn’t bother me that much.

Anywho, I’ll be watching Fast Five tonight (and I’ll keep a close eye on The Rock’s performance), so maybe I’ll change my mind about him playing Luke Cage, but until then I’m sticking to what I’ve said: The Rock isn’t suited to play Cage.

        • “secondary characters go through a lot more “cosmetic” changes”

cant stop laughing at that cause in my mind im thinking of plastic surgery lol

anyway Luke Cage had alot of changes in the comics. sometimes in the comics he is dark skin then light skin, afro no-afro, big built or trim built.

          • Yeah, sorry about that (couldn’t think of another word besides “cosmetic” to describe what I was trying to say ;) ).

Anyway, I see your point about Luke Cage’s changes in the comics, and I’m not saying The Rock would be a terrible choice, I just think there might be a few better actors that could do the character more justice is all… so I guess we’ll see (IF they ever make a Luke Cage movie)

          • He was always drawn pretty big though, he was never shown particularly lean.

    • I’m all over that Avenger. Black Panther is without a doubt one of my favorite characters and should be played by Chieweteldee Eifelltower or however he spells his name.

  26. I look forward to seeing Duane Johnson portray Roadblock in G.I. Joe. Once that happens however, I will not be able to see him play any comic character. IMO, every one of the suggestions made here are not a fit. Well, except maybe Lobo. I think he could pull that off. Idras Elba would be the perfect John Stewart though.

  27. Dwayne Johnson has great delivery and personality. However he doesn’t fit Captain Marvel at all nor any DC universe character I can think of. I believe he would be great as Bishop in the Marvel universe. Along with Avatar’s Stephen Lang as Cable, they can create a story where they ‘erase’ what happened in X-Men 3 and bring in Apocalypse. Since there’s a lot of time travel in that storyline, it might work.

  28. I want The Rock to play Luke Cage from Marvel if he had to play a DC character i would say Lobo if anything but not cyborg or Shazam.

  29. Cyborg. DC will want to start working on their own “Avengers”. I really don’t see them working on any movies, in the near future, that wouldn’t lead up the the inevitable JLA movie.
