The Road Behind The Scenes Featurette

My favorite book of last year has become my favorite film of this year. I’m talking of course about the big-screen adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s The Road and if you haven’t checked out my review yet go HERE and see why I truly believe this film is currently the most deserving contender for a Best Picture Oscar.

The Road will be released in theaters this week for the Thanksgiving holiday, and if you want to know why that is such an appropriate release date (the time to be thankful) then we have a behind-the-scenes featurette that will help you understand the power of this story and how it translated into such a powerful film.

Starring Viggo Mortensen and Kodi Smit-McPhee, The Road tells the story of a father and son wandering the dystopian landscape of post-apocalyptic America, trying to avoid roving bands of cannibals and insane murderers, headed for the southern coastline before they freeze to death come Winter.

The performances of Mortensen and Smit-McPhee are unforgettable, as is every performance turned in by the supporting cast (Robert Duvall, Michael K. Williams, Guy Pierce, Garret Dillahunt and Charlize Theron). Many of those supporting players are featured in this making-of video, along with brief glimpses of the book’s elusive author, Cormac McCarthy (No Country For Old Men).

Check it out:

Mortensen is long overdue for an Oscar win and if this film doesn’t earn him that honor, there really is little justice (or sense) in the Academy voting system. Hearing the cast and crew talk about the actor’s strict dedication to the part is downright inspiring.

Similarly, I think the real breakout star of this film is the director, John Hillcoat. Hillcoat, previously know for is work on The Proposition, has shown (me at least) that he has so much to offer in the way of great cinema. The man is now officially on my radar as one of those directors-to-watch.

Look, I could go on and on about this film. The long/short of it is that it’s a great film, and despite all the other big, flashy films vying for your attention this Thanksgiving weekend, The Road is the one I recommend you go see.

Did the making of featurette get you interested?

The Road hits theaters on Wednesday November 25, 2009.
