Gareth Evans' Indonesian martial arts movie The Raid received a wave of applause (in review form) when it premiered at Toronto International Film Festival 2011, telling a stripped-down story of an elite police squad attempting to fight their way through an apartment block in Jakarta, with the intention of arresting the crime lord who owns it.

The Raid's rookie officer Rama (Iko Uwais) returned this year in The Raid 2, which defied the bad sequel blues and ended up impressing critics just as much - and in some cases more so - than the first movie, with a 71% rating on Metacritic and 80% on Rotten Tomatoes. The sequel picks up shortly after the end of the first movie, as Rama finds himself going undercover in a Jakarta mob in order to eliminate a threat to his family.

If you enjoyed The Raid (or like the sound of The Raid 2)  then we have good news for you: The Raid 2 will be available on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD in North America on July 8th, and Screen Rant has an exclusive clip of the first 8 minutes and 45 seconds of the movie to enjoy RIGHT NOW. The clip features the return of characters from The Raid - including Rama, his brother Andi (Donny Alamsyah) and the corrupt Lieutenant Wahyu (Pierre Gruno) - as well as a few new players.

The Raid 2 portraits

The Blu-ray edition of The Raid 2 comes with 90 minutes of behind-the-scenes featurettes, including one called "Violent Ballet: Behind the Choreography," which offers a more detailed look at the traditional Indonesian martial art pencak silat that is used in both Raid movies. Other Blu-ray exclusives include a deleted scene called "Gang War," and a featurette called "The Next Chapter: Shooting a Sequel," which explores the transition between the first movie and the second.

The Raid 2 Blu-ray Cover

As seen in the above clip, The Raid 2 gets off to a sinister start, with two characters from the previous movie brutally executed and Rama set on the path that will lead him to cross paths with Uco (Arifin Putra), the son of another major Jakarta crime boss. Calling all fans of crime thrillers and martial arts movies: do you like what you see in this introduction?
