Great Scott! Just last week, some details of The Office series finale were finally revealed, complete with the hour-long farewell’s story and a list of guest stars, including one-time series regulars and writers B.J. Novak and Mindy Kaling. One detail that has been left up in the air, however, is the potential return of former Dunder-Mifflin regional manager Michael Scott, brought to life memorably by Steve Carell.

Initially, news from a few months ago said it was unlikely that Carell would return. But recent reports that the actor was on set for the production of the finale seemed to indicate otherwise. Now we finally have an answer.

If TVLine‘s report is to be believed,Carell has been confirmed to show up in the series finale, though his role may not exactly be substantial. Carell’s appearance has been described as more of a cameo than a real guest spot. This might just be good misdirection, but considering the way things have developed between Dwight (Rainn Wilson) and Angela (Angela Kinsey), their wedding seems like the more likely option for this wrap-up.

Here’s a description of the series finale: “Months after the airing of the documentary, the workers of Dunder Mifflin, past and present, gather for a wedding and a final round of interviews. Mysteries are solved, hatchets are buried, pranks are prunked.” And guest stars include Rachael Harris, Dakota Johnson, Joan Cusack, Ed Begley Jr., Malcolm Barrett, Matt Jones, Andy Buckley, Mike Schur and Bobby Ray Shafer.

Though Carell hasn’t returned to The Office since leaving the series towards the end of the seventh season in 2011, his return would be just one more touching moment for a finale that is sure to inspire a lot of emotions. Of course, fans would love to be surprised and see Carell show up for more than just a quick scene, but the finale is just over a week away, so those who have been following the show all these years will find out how how this all ends up very soon.

  1. Nice headline spoiler jerk-face.

    • This is 2013. There is no such thing as a spoiler if you use the internet. Grow up, you baby.

      • Maybe you should grow up, since you’re the one acting like an obnoxious child. Of course there are spoilers, whether you’re on the internet or not doesn’t make a difference. You’re just making excuses for being a bad person. Get over yourself, kid.

  2. I was hoping to be surprised during the finale if Michael showed up. Kind of hard when it’s in the headline and on my twitter feed.

Oh well, at least it’s good news I suppose.

  3. YEEEAAAAYYYY

  4. Relax, the headline doesn’t state his part length.

    • That’s what she said (you knew it was coming)

      • You knew it was coming?! That’s what she said!!!

  5. yay!

  6. I would like to see Timothy Oliphant also do a cameo in the finale.

  7. It would be nice if Michael Scott showed up with Holly at the wedding at the end of the episode and just because Michael loves being in the spotlight, he decides he and Holly should have a double wedding with Dwight and Angela and get married right there. Dwight, always being the devoted follower of Michael obviously thinks it’s a great idea and goes along with it. That to me would be a perfect ending for the Office.
