Steve Carell wraps his role on The Office The Office: You Havent Seen The Last Of Michael Scott

Last night’s episode of The Office may have been a tearful goodbye to one of television’s favorite characters, but as it turns out, we may not have seen the last of Michael Scott.

Speaking with The Office producer Randy Cordray on FusedFilm’s FusedTV podcast, Marc Vibbert, Justin Vactor and I discussed  anything and everything related to television production with Cordray, including the evolution of the single-camera comedy and, most importantly, The Office.

While Cordray was quick to reveal that it costs $150,000 a day to take ‘The Office’ on location to film, the television veteran made sure not to reveal any SPOILERS of what’s to come. Fortunately, while talking in-length about Steve Carell’s final days on The Office, and the wrap-party that followed (including a cake shaped like Michael Scott’s “World’s Best Boss” mug), Cordray did reveal one small thing: Steve Carell may not be completely done with The Office.

“We created a #1 jersey for Steve Carell [to honor the fact that Steve Carell is #1 on the call sheet]… and gave that to him. We retired #1… in hopes that [Steve Carell] will return some day and do a guest spot for us. We haven’t killed the guy; we haven’t killed his character.”

“…I can’t say that he will, but [Steve Carell] hasn’t ruled that out; he hasn’t said that he wouldn’t come back and do another episode for us in the future.”

So, what does this mean for Dunder Mifflin and NBC’s tent-pole series? If Michael Scott does return, it would realistically make sense – for it to be Michael and Holly’s wedding. Considering Michael and Holly were just engaged, perhaps an appearance in season 8 isn’t out of the question.

As for the new boss on The Office? Well, Cordray wouldn’t reveal who would be taking over for Michael Scott, but he did sound really excited for what’s to come:

“I think the Office is in an exciting transition period, and I really believe in the future of the show. The writers, and Paul Lieberstein, and Greg Daniels are very, very brilliant people and will reinvent this show in an exciting way. There are a lot of scenarios being played out.”

With the season finale being titled “Search Committee,” Dunder Mifflin will be seeing a cavalcade of guest stars appear: Ricky Gervais, James Spader, Jim Carrey and Catherine Tate. Perhaps by the time the season comes to an end, Dunder Mifflin’s new boss will have been chosen

  1. From what I’ve been gathering, some fans believe that Darryl will be handed the job… I don’t want to see that happen; no disrespect to Craig Robinson, who does a great job.

My money is one Will Arnett, or possibly Catherine Tate.

  2. If the ratings start to slump I imagine the possibility of Michael showing up in the second half of the season for an episodes or two is greatly increased.

  3. Really hope Catherine Tate doesn’t get the job full time, I certainly wouldn’t be interested in watching that show.

  4. Will definitely be an unknown impro esque actor. After the A list of candidate cameos in the final episode any attempt to try and replace Carell with a like for like would be TV suicide, no matter how big the new star. The show needs to freshen up and take a completely new direction and their best bet is to create a new star and dynamic with the narrative. I think thats a good thing, because as great as Carell has been over the years, his decision to leave will be a blessing in disguise as unfortunately the past couple seasons simply havnt been as fresh as the first 6. Great writers though and sure they will relish the new challenge.

  5. at the last episode, the end part (asking every candidate),
the last before Dwight shrute, its Jim carrey, So I think :D jim carrey going to be played a manager role.
    Hope it will be fun.
But If Dwight play a role of changed character, like trying to be like Michele and get punk, but trying tactically to apply his Nazi rules… this battle will go along for 22 weeks and will be fun.

  6. or it will be fun, every day new boss, comes to office and get fired.
every day bosses will be having a fractuer of michele’s lively , lovely charcter. So that every new manager capture one person’s heart in the office.
    :D :D :D

  7. i belive that michael and holly will be gettin married in the upcoming season and also, i think evryone is forgetting the erin fact! who is she going to choose?! andy or gabe! personaly i find andy better than gabe, but i think she needs some guidence.

  8. I just want Michael back. He is so unpredictable and just this show just won’t be the same without him.

  9. You can’t replace Steve Carell. I quit watching when he left. Just not the same. I mean TUBE CITY people! No one could pull that off other than Steve Carell. I mean what is Pam going to turn into..? She’s just going to be another Angela. Jim has stopped his lovely pranks. What happened to D’Whites random schemes?? Face it.. The Office is dead now.

  10. Catherine Tate ruined the office don’t waste your time on season 8. (time is the most precious thing on the planet, don’t waste it with Nellie (Catherine Tate)

  11. I stupidly watched two more episodes when the Nellie character became the manager of the branch. I now want my life back. Never again will I watch The Office if Catherine Tate is on the show.

  12. I know personally 10000 people who will quit watching if micheal Scott doesn’t come back as Scranton manager

  13. Catherine Tate a regular…OMG, I think I just threw up in my mouth a little bit. I will not watch an office that includes nellie in the story.

  14. I hope Michael Scott comes back for the last season.. Though it shouldn’t be for a wedding, since it’s been over a year since he left, he should have gotten married by then, so hopefully he’ll be expecting a child or have a baby. It’d be nice to see him come back for a few episodes, I didn’t even think about him being manager again — but I guess things didn’t work out with Robert California, so that would be cool too. I’d just like to see him come back. Maybe have Angela find out that her husband is gay.
