The New West Graphic Novel Benderspink Options The New West Graphic Novel

Jimmy Palmiotti’s 2005 graphic novel The New West seems like it was always meant to be a movie. Set in a near future where an electromagnetic bomb has destroyed all technology in Los Angeles, the story hits on all the checkpoints of a typical sci-fi flick.

Post-apocalyptic wasteland? Check. Edgy anti-hero? Check. Old genre conventions with a modern twist? Check. The list goes on and on.

Now it looks like a New West movie may actually happen, with Variety reporting that the management-production company Benderspink has optioned the series for a film adaptation.

Benderspink will apparently produce the film alongside Gareb Shamus, former CEO and President of Wizard Entertainment (whose subsidiary Black Bull Comics produced the series).

Here are some more details on the film:

“Story centers on a bomb creating an electromagnetic pulse that causes all technology to stop working in Los Angeles. A disgraced former LAPD detective endures a near-future deserted hostile environment where the mayor has been kidnapped.”

As the writer of Jonah Hex for many years, and its New 52 continuation, All-Star Western, Palmiotti has always been a strong western writer and, while I haven’t read the series itself, the plot of The New West does sound fairly interesting (albeit formulaic).

It’s interesting to consider how many graphic novels and comic book series have been plucked up over the last decade to get optioned as movies. Perhaps screenwriters should aspire to write comic books instead of screenplays to get their first break in Hollywood?

Has anyone out there ready The New West? If so, please share your thoughts in the comics. In the meantime, feel free to discuss your favorite post-apocalyptic sci-fi film. I call dibs on The Road Warrior.

  1. That’s like the fourth post-apocalypse movie that I’ve read about recently, what’s up with that? I don’t mind, I love good sci-fi but too much of a good thing….

    • Utopia is old hat. Post-apocalypse is the future man! ^-^

      • Yet still no fallout movie, they need to look into that. Best post apocalyptic game ever
