‘The Mentalist’ Season 5 Details – ‘Dark’ Jane & Red John Reveal

The Mentalist Season 5

[WARNING - THIS POST CONTAINS THE MENTALIST SEASON 4 SPOILERS!!!]

After six “relaxing” months in Las Vegas, The Mentalist season 4 finale brought Patrick Jane closer to Red John than ever before – or so he thought (again). Though Red John may still be at large, the CBI now has Lorelei, one of his accomplices, in custody. Will Jane be able to “make her sing like a bird” next season?

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, series creator Bruno Heller discussed what’s in store for Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) in season 5, the dark turn the series will take next season, the move to Sunday night, how some fans will be disappointed when Red John is finally revealed, and much more.

With Lorelei (Emmanuelle Chriqui) firmly in the grasps of the CBI, fans are waiting to see how Jane will get information about Red John out of her. Even though Red John’s accomplices don’t typically survive capture, Heller says he “hopes” she’ll stick around for a bit next season – hopefully long enough to get Jane closer to Red John.

Perhaps hinting at Patrick Jane’s interrogation techniques, Heller says that fans will be seeing a darker side of Jane in season 5:

…it’s not that Jane is No More Mr. Nice Guy, but we’re certainly going to see a little more of that hard darker side of him.

The show is not going to turn into a much darker show, but that character will show more of those colors. We’re getting closer to the meat of what the show is about.

That being said, don’t expect to see Red John officially revealing himself anytime soon. If anything, it will be at least two more seasons before that actually occurs. Being completely aware of how temperamental some series fans can be, Heller says that he knows people will be disappointed when Red John’s true identity is finally revealed:

…if season 5 we just opened a door and said “tah-dah!” and it was some mid-range actor, that would be disappointing. The trick is going to be — and this is coming — bringing the audience along and making them second guess themselves and ask, “Is that him? Is that him?” Red John ultimately is just a man — whenever you see the great criminals reduced to the flesh it’s sort of disappointing. I have two seasons or so to make it come true. I can guarantee that people will be disappointed.

You might already have seen him.

The Mentalist - Season 5

When it comes to talk about future seasons, one has to touch upon CBS’ recent decision to abruptly cancel CSI: Miami without providing the producers enough time to end the series appropriately. Fortunately, The Mentalist doesn’t appear to be anywhere near the position that CSI: Miami was when it was canceled. But if it does happen, Heller promises that they’ll know well enough in advance to make sure closure is provided for fans.

It’s the job of myself and everybody else on this show to keep it working as well as it does to ensure we get that final arc. A show that’s been running this long with the degree of success it’s had, we’ll know well in advance of that sort of outcome and we’ll adjust accordingly. I’m not concerned about that.

Of course, making the move to Sunday night may still have fans worried about what may happen to their favorite series. Thanks to Sunday night no longer carrying the terrible programming stigma that it has in the past, Heller has no worries about viewers finding The Mentalist in his new timeslot.

If I thought making a fuss would make any difference then I would feel differently. But there’s aspects of this job you don’t have control over. Our audience will follow us and hopefully we’ll also find a different audience than we found on Thursday nights.

While we won’t for sure know how The Mentalist will do on Sundays nights, CBS’ decision to move the series to the weekends represents their intention to expand their schedule to include compelling series across the entirety of the broadcast week, instead of solely focusing on certain key weekday programming.

So make sure that your viewing schedules are adjusted accordingly, as Patrick Jane takes on Sunday nights this fall.

  1. Yeah, I would agree. Dissapointing us with PJ being RJ in the 5th season will make Mentalist a cheap movie. But a victory of RJvsPJ, making us to believe PJ is RJ would be nice. And this leave the door open for the 6th season to prove the opposite.

    • I agree that it would seem a cheap movie but it would need a twist. As mentioned in this article before, a good twist would be for PJ to be RJ but actually PJ isn’t PJ. The ‘real’ PJ was killed just before/after the Mrs and Miss Jane were killed (as we know so little about them the timeline would be inconsequential). Lisbon finds this all out when Jane gets too ‘dark’ in Season 5 and the whole of Season 6 will be based on Lisbon investigating her suspicions before a Mexican Stand Off between ‘Jane’, Lisbon and Brett Stiles (who Jane has convinced everyone of being RJ in Season 5 and 6). Thoughts?

      • so you think that the show will survive, if a plot like that is reviled ? What is the purpose of the show ? only to shock as to the core?
i think the moral to the story is that a person like Jane can change and redeem him self .
the word God is used allot, and even RJ in the Limo is convinced that there is no life after death and that he is not going to get punished by God.
Yes there are many ambiguities all threw the show about his behavior, and thy can be explained by the fact that he is mentally ill. But way have a character like Lisbon in the mix if she is not going to be his moral compass. I think is allot more simple that it looks. Jane is a character ravaged by guilt and all he wants redemption. Revenge was his goal at the beginning but now all he want’s is semi normal life.
I have trust in Jane that he will make the right choice at the end, with S.Theresa at his side.
Yes I know that is sound to cliché but I rather watch a show with happy ending.
I know that at the end I will be disappointed and you will be right…
jane is RJ, him and Lisbon are not in love and life suck. :)

        • Actually, I hope Red John is an actual person (just as we thought Timothy Carter was Red John) because at least it makes The Mentalist more of a mystery. The fact it’s the main protagonist who is the antagonist would be very disappointing. Besides, why do we have ‘Red John’ moments? I’d either have PJ is dead and RJ stole his identity or RJ is an actual person e.g Jane’s Dad!!

          • ok I don’t get the RJ is Jane’s Dad thing..Is not that I don’t agree but just I don’t see the logic of it.
            take me through it .

            • We only know Jane’s Dad has no scruples in respect to how he conned the mother into a ‘health crystal’ which would never heal her terminally ill Daughter. So he has a callous side. But that’s all we know about him.

              • i see your point……one thing tho….the smily face looks allot like Jane’s face…that is way I think there is a chance he is RJ…as usual I’m lost in all this speculations….I jest want the all thing reviled already .

                • But when you saw Jane shoot ‘Red John’ in the 3rd Season Finale I’m sure you thought ‘Yes, got him!’. I know I did. And that’s why I want Jane’s nemesis to be a family member as opposed to being Jane. Also, if his Dad or Brother, it explains why Jane is kept alive. Blood’s thicker then water. I can’t believe we have 2 more Seasons before finding out though!!!!

                  • Yes I deed. I was shocked by Jane revelation. This RJ thing is getting on my nerves.
This individual has really unrealistic power over two law enforcement agency’s…I want to know how the writers are going to explain this one out.
And how he got Kristina Fry to totally lose her mind.
To the brother theory RJ has to bee way older than Jane ( see my theory of Jane being RJ crushed by my own logic ) His killing are at least 15 to 20 years old ( correct me if i’m wrong)…so this can back up your theory about Jane’s Dad.

                    • i think the killer’s skills and secret identity is overrated a little bit , i mean this person can’t be so powerful like that and it just feels like he owns the world lol and patrick just fight him alone lol it’s just like a game called PRINCE OF PERSIA lol … remindes me of it haha! anyway it is a good series and clue that it really getting on our nerves letting us wondering and writing all these comments on a simple character that doesn’t even exist in the real world and this is what makes it a great series and story .. bravo heller!

                • The Smiley Face also looks like Cho’s! Or Jane’s Dad or anyone else haha!

                  • yes you are right……But Cho RJ ??? NOOOOO

                    • Anything’s possible. He slapped Summer after all so a clue to violence towards women! I have this instinct RJ will be his Dad. What is Jane’s Father’s name?

        • I forgot to ask…IF it turned out PJ is RJ and he did murder his own Wife and Daughter, how does that constitute as a ‘happy ending’?!?

    • Clues that PJ is RJ:
Told Lorelei that killing Carter felt ‘kinda good’.
      Can hypnotise and manipulate.
      Read Carl Jung’s Book.
      Voice in Limousine.
Realised Panzer was SJK within seconds.
Being in CBI has all access via the Team.
      Did destroy all RJ files.
Yet I STILL don’t think PJ is RJ!!

      • Clues that PJ is RJ:
Told Lorelei that killing Carter felt ‘kinda good’.
        Can hypnotise and manipulate.
        Can read people in seconds.
        Read Carl Jung’s Book.
        Voice in Limousine.
Realised Panzer was SJK within seconds.
Being in CBI has all access via the Team.
        Did destroy all RJ files.
        Doesn’t believe in God.
Yet I STILL don’t think PJ is RJ!!

    • Another question we have all overlooked is….if Red John did really kill Jane’s Daughter, why is she the only child to have died? I’m beginning to think Red John didn’t kill the Jane family. Thoughts?

    • I know it was to get Jane’s attention but then again, why did Panzer get killed but Jane kept alive? They both mocked him after all

  2. i am red john Tiger Tiger. burning bright,
    In the forests of the night;
    What immortal hand or eye.
    Could frame thy fearful symmetry?

In what distant deeps or skies.
Burnt the fire of thine eyes?
On what wings dare he aspire?
What the hand, dare seize the fire?

And what shoulder, & what art,
Could twist the sinews of thy heart?
And when thy heart began to beat.
What dread hand? & what dread feet?

What the hammer? what the chain,
In what furnace was thy brain?
What the anvil? what dread grasp.
    Dare its deadly terrors clasp?

When the stars threw down their spears
And watered heaven with their tears:
Did he smile His work to see?
Did he who made the lamb make thee?

    Tiger Tiger burning bright,
In the forests of the night:
    What immortal hand or eye,
    Dare frame thy fearful symmetry?

    • Having read the poem fully I realise now that you are indeed Patrick Jane’s twin brother!!!! ‘What immortal hand or eye, dare frame thy fearful symmetry’! Immortal hand or eye meaning hereditary and symmetry meaning a Brother.

      • that would explain why they sound alike and why they have simmon talk for him…..

        • Either a Brother or Jane’s Dad. Just a feeling so far.

    • hey RJ you have allot of Jane’s trades don’t you.

  3. Ok so couple new theories. As you all know, patrick jane’s voice was the voice of red john in the limo in season 4 finale. i still think he is RED JOHN but is mentally ill and may not realize. But..if u watch season 1 finale, when he spots the smiley face over rosalind’s bed, he looks genuinely shocked. she is blind, therefore it is genuine shock, for there is no one else to act shocked in front of. This could mean he is not red john or he is and he is mentally sick. Now we know red john hypnotizes his followers. he is a mentalist like jane and part of what a mentalist does is gets people to do what they want by way of hypnosis. so if jane is red john, he could hypnotize his followers so they wouldnt recognize them if they were standing in front of them.

a side theory i also have involves grace van pelt..she could be a RJ follower. i once believed that she may be red john. remember the little girl that patrick jane cons as a kid at the carnival, at his father’s urging? what if that is van pelt and she survived. what if its some kind of revenge? far fetched but you never know. anyways i am convinced that either jane has an evil twin who is RJ or he is red john. either the man in the season two finale who saves jane from the copycats is a follower, or he was there only in jane’s head. jane could have shot the two copycats. he shot the man at the mall. yes he thought it was red john, but jane also threatened to kill the kid in the interrogation room in the season 1 finale. bruno heller said we will explore a much darker side to jane in the next season. shoutouts to the people who spotted the police car in the desert and the way jane and lisbon stared at it. shoutout to me noticing that jane was reading CARL JUNG MODERN MAN IN SEARCH OF A SOUL in the season 4 finale. that book basically has this quote from JUNG: “The meeting of two personalities is like the contact of two chemical substances: if there is any reaction, both are transformed.” i believe jane has a dark side that is slowly coming out. red john side of him is winning more and more. he is his own moriarty. look at the way he kisses lorelei as lisbon looks at him. there are more messages we have missed. the thing that bothers me is the way rosalind describes a man with straight hair. does patrick’s evil side completely change his appearance because it is the opposite of patrick? jane is red john. he has to be. its the only way it can end. some may think it is stupid but is it? i think trying to explain anyone else we saw being red john is stupid. ok so maybe his dad will reappear, but he isnt red john. oh and like i said grace van pelt is one of red john’s followers….or is she the one who ends up killing him when its over? its like someone else said on here somewhere….there is a reason they show her in the pilot episode joining the team. she is an important part of this somehow. anyways…like i said, until they explain why patrick jane’s voice was red john’s in the limo, i am going with jane being john. i also like someone else’s theory though that red john killed patrick jane a long time ago and has been posing as him. thats such a cool theory. although wouldnt the cbi strongly look into their consultant’s background? so many questions.

    • If RJ had taken PJ’s identity then it’s likely even CBI may not check too much into a man who lost his Wife and Daughter and wants to help sift the bad from the good. Besides, RJ could have an insider to help with that detail (preliminary checks). But there is one question….who was the figure who killed Rebecca in Season One!?

    • Maybe the 2 chemical substances reacting is regarding Jane and Lisbon. After all, Jane did say ‘Love you’ to Lisbon before the reading of that book scene.

  4. one more thing..because this has bothered me really bad. after further review, Bret Partridge is the supposed Red John in the season two finale who saves jane. it is 10000% his voice. This boggles my mind because he was only in the pilot and the season two finale. it also boggles my mind because jane is the voice of red john in the season 4 finale. this needs to be explained when the ending is revealed. they cant just have these two charACTERS, one minor and the other being the main character, both voice red john and then reveal him to be someone else in the end. so strange.

    • it was kristina frye who saved him dude.

    • It may be Partridge’s voice being broadcast but (just like the radio on Wainwright) who the person under the mask was could be completely different, eg Jane’s Dad in the disguise but using a walkie talkie to get Partridge to Broadcast the voice! And if Partridge is Jane’s unknown Brother, this all tallies up!!

  5. It’s impossible that Patrick is Red John. Once there was a episode that Red John talked to Jane in person.
Ben Stiles, the president of Visualize. He asked jane about Red John, he has resources and he talked with Grace about a technique to clear her mind and talked about red smoke and red anger or something. And he looks very suspicious.
All the episode of the season 4 is suspicious, it’s the episode 16. But in the 23:20 minute is the moment that I said about Grace and the red smoke..

  6. I had though alot of red john before, if we all think too deep we will find the answer for example why would he name himself red john though we can understand the ‘red’ part but why john is it a nickname or just a name to drive us to think it’s a man rather than a woman but in fact it is a woman, we also may think that red john is actually a family member of patrick jane, but then again he never attacked jane before jane insulted him publicly so more likely he is only a serial killer whom took an interest in jane rather than killing him that’s why he killed only jane’s wife and daughter, also red john would be someone whom jane knows very well and it might be someone who looks innocent like the blind girlfriend of RJ while it also can be wayne regsby or even kimball cho or even an ex carnival friend of jane’s father, as to the theory of jane’s father being the RJ it is possible but one can’t assume he is RJ as would a man kill his grandchild and his son’s wife it’s highly unlikely to be jane’s family member, but my conclusion is that RJ is most likely someone whom everyone have seen but never suspected him, like the wife of regsby or chou’s girlfriend summer or it might be someone who is a con man that befriended jane when he was young, the answer shall be revealed in future episodes when the fans receive more clues..

    • Bruno Heller seid that in the first ep we will find the clues we need….i keep watching the first seen and I vary sure that I’m missing something important.
We know for sure only two thing about RJ, he has strait heir and that is less than 6 feet tall. That will narrow down the list of suspects. And one more clue ” hi likes the cold “

      • The important thing is Van Pelt first appeared in the episode.

  7. ok so i have re watched them all. im so confused. brett partridge is def the “red john” who saves patrick from the copy cats in season 2 finale. without question its partridge. is partridge the real red john, for the simple fact that he envies jane and is jealous because jane basically came into the help police and was getting all the recognition and jane was doing what red john basically wished he could do, show off and help the police? i dont know. it still doesnt explain why jane’s voice would be the voice on the phone strapped to wainwright’s chest in the season 4 finale. i mean if jane is red john he could of pre recorded it. and if jane is john, then partridge could be one of his many followers who does everything he says because jane hypnotizes them. they cant just use jane’s voice to throw us off. it needs to be explained why jane’s voice would be red john’s voice lol so strange.

    • Season 2 finale was a Red John hoax. It has to be because he shoots the young Red John wannabes but doesn’t leave the smiley face symbol. It may have been Brett Partridge in the outfit but he’s a fake Red John.

  8. I think the RED JOHN’s character is PATRICK JANE but according to what happened to him after he lost his daughter and wife and who killed him i don’t think he is enough as a psychopath to kill his own family and pretend that he feel pain to what happened to them and tracking the murderer of his family i think MR.HELLER created all that to confuse us about the murderer because in the 1st season he killed someone who tried to kill TERESA LISBON that he was pretending to be the SERIAL KILLER “RED JOHN” then he met red john after RED JOHN saved hislife in the hotel that JANE almost be killed by the psychopath couple that track RED JOHN and his ways to kill others and paint the red smiley FACES on the WALLS and after that he killed another man after knowing that he was the red john in the mall after that he knew he is not the serial killer it’s really confusing when you think that red john is one of the CBI staff because and the truth there is too many suspects one of them i mentioned and it is PATRICK and the other is the 1st boss agent in the CBI that worked with them in the 1st season and the one who was fishing when Patrick asked him for a favor and information about the mentioned serial killer,it’s all a circle but at least the show is comedian and there is drama and funny times and action plus there is a deductive part which makes us (the watchers) think and try to understand and know who is the guilty person .. anyway cheers for THE MENTALIST it’s a good show .. but another point have you noticed friends >> when PATRICK(SIMON) speaks about others privet things and their feelings and PERSONALITY! especially didn’t you notice him that he just speaks it in a literature way and appears that he memorized it and knew it before .. less than that i think other things are 80% true. thanks for reading

  9. ANSWERING about GB’s confusion about Red John’s Identity >>> i think Brett is also a primary suspect but i don’t think Brett is that clever to beat Patrick according to the Season 1 > 1st episode he made fun of him .. plus Brett is too young to have the experience and the friends like the secretary woman and the blind woman and others has been mentioned in the previous episodes and according to his killing type and plus he started killing people at 1988 at it says on the Wikipedia as episode’s fact information, he killed 28 person could be 32 until season 4 or 5 — this character shows a big monster in THE MENTALIST series .. and if we come back when Patrick’s family been murdered by the serial killer and the reason behind it .. the reason all will be that PATRICK MENTIONED HIS NAME PROUDLY which he is a psychopath that kills and destroys who mention him or try to make fun of him so and as a result i think it is Honcho Virgil Minneli the 1st boss of the CBI agency and i advice you to take a look at this link as it shows a theories about the identity of RED JOHN”"” http://beyondthementalist.weebly.com/red-johns-theories.html

  10. For what it’s worth, in the season 4 finale, PJ proclaimed to Lorelei (in response to her claim that she would not tell what she knows about Red John), “Oh yes you will…You will sing like a bird…”
This same phrase was used in season 1, episode 11, when PJ proved a prisoner with info on RJ was innocent. When asked about his possible release, the prisoner promised PJ, “If you get me out of this place, I will tell you all I know about Red John… I will sing like a bird…”
Needless to say, PJ proved his innocence, but before he ever talked, RJ murdered him in a Tijuana hotel…
Any thoughts about a link between these two episodes?

    • Not, I think is a coincidence. But one thing that we learned from that ep is that RJ has no reach in the prison system.

      • He assassinated Rebecca en route to a Cell in Season Two so he may have more influence than first thought. And Timothy Carter’s Wife ‘committed suicide’ whilst in prison proclaiming her Husband was Red John. When he wasn’t.

        • What I was trying to say, is that Red John needed to wait fort to live Jared Renfrew before he was able to kill him. He did not kill his firs accomplice Orville Tanner, I suspect because hi was in prison.

  11. For some reason I think the little girl that jane and his father conned is Van Pelt. I think she survived her illness and either works for red john or is there to kill him once found

    • I like the thinking but it may be Van Pelt’s dead older Sister. Hence the revenge angle. And the reason to kill Jane’s Wife and Daughter. I actually am wondering if Red John isn’t Jane’s evil Twin or Father but instead is the Psychic Cousin of Van Pelt!!!

      • Also, not only does Jane suffer but so would Jane’s Dad (as his GrandDaughter and Daughter-In-Law). If Van Pelt killed Jane’s Family. But how young would she have been? And their deaths may have been framed to look like a Red John murder when in fact, they weren’t.

  12. It’s partridge. My jane is rj theory is over. Creator bruno heller said all the clues are in the first episode. Forensics guy brett partridge only appears in the first episode/pilot and the season two finale. And partridge is def the guy who saves Jane in season two finale. I’m thinking partridge has to be a brother that Jane doesn’t know about. Hence, the poem. What immortal hand could frame thy fearful symmetry. Janes dad made them both. Jane and his brother. So my final and last theory is that partridge is RJ. Still dont know why janes voice is being used as red johns in the season 4 finale. Maybe it was just to throw us off. Maybe the guy who plays partridge wasn’t available to do the voice.

    • He is to young. Jane is to young, I have the strange impression that RJ is non of the characters we have seen so far. Bruno’s comments was made to confuse us.
How dose RJ know that Lisbon is important to Jane? It is not a thing that he shares with people, only the team knows about it,” if” they know.

    • Partridge is a Red John wannabe!

  13. Love the mentalist… but the writers don’t know a single thing about MMA. They wrote an episode about boxing with boxing accusations of fight fixing, boxing accusations of plaster gloves, fighter named manny pacow, CGI fighters because they never even met a real MMA fighter, and absolutely nothing to do with a real sport! Boxing sucks, and your attempt at making MMA look like its lame and fixed the way boxing is FAILED! Anyone who actually watches MMA is going to think this episode is ridiculous!

  14. Okay people…Patrick Jane is NOT Red John (though it had me going for awhile).

FIRST OFF and MOST IMPORTANTLY, the writers have confirmed there have been at least two sightings of Red John. The first was when Red John saved Jane from the drama kids, and the second was him holding the teacup at the blind woman’s house. So with that fact Jan CANT be Red John. For those of you saying that Red John is many people, I agree, but the ACTUAL Red John is only one person, and when his followers talk about him, they talk like he is a man and not a group of men.

And I am not convinced (though it is similar) that the voice in the Limo is Jane’s in high pitch. It sounds similar to the Red John in the season 2 finale, and also to Bradley Whitford.

And FINALLY…it would so piss me off and would make it impossible for me to watch the series again.

    • I agree entirely that the voice is not conclusively Jane’s. But I think Partridge being Jane’s Brother is an interesting concept. After all, Partridge isn’t even credited with a name in either episode. And he works for the Police so would have access to any files. However, as Rebecca said, Red John can see through people. I don’t think Partridge has that ability. But he could be Red John wannabe. I still have a feeling it’s Jane’s Dad or evil twin! Or Jane isn’t Jane at all but is Red John!

  15. Van pelt def is invoked with red john

    • guys wer i can get season five, i kinda hvnt followed it on tv, saw all the seasons in a span of 15 days, and i really lykd it

      • It’s only just being filmed!

  16. What if in the series finale some one like brett partridge goes down as red john, but Patrick Jane is the real red john and gets away or goes undetected. Or Jane is revealed as red john by Lisbon and is killed by her or put in a psych ward where he continues to manipulate and brainwash people. Would be a cool ending. Can someone other than me please tell me the significance of patrick Jane reading Carl jung’s modern man in search of a soul in the season 4 finale? They said pay close attention. That can’t be a coincidence. Could it be because Jane is red john and he is reading up on trying to find a soul somewhere within himself?

    • Firstly, the clues Jane is Red John:
He tells Lorelei it felt good to kill (regarding Season 3 ending)
He explains to Partridge the exact symmetry of Red John’s Smiley Face symbol (how the blood is anti-clockwise)
He has conned a dying girl.
He has no belief in God.
He can see through people and even hypnotise them.
      He read Carl Jung.
And yet I still don’t think PJ is RJ. But if he is RJ then he isn’t PJ!

  17. Good guess thinking its Cho, but I think it could be the blind lady as well,or a family member like that dude said.

  18. Red John is great at finding the good and bad in people and using it to his advantage. Much like Jane and the way he goes thru suspects in each case. Both love tea and symphony music(see Jane in “Rhapsody in Red”) rosalind harker(blind woman) said red john loves Bach. Both are mentalists and can seemingly brainwash or talk people into doing what they want. These are not coincidences. They are either tied to one another somehow or Jane is red john. Whose to say Jane didn’t kill his wife because he was jealous or angry about her leaving him. The similarities between Jane and Red John are so eerily similar, that I will be shocked if it turns out that Jane isnt Red John. I believe they will make us believe red john is someone else all the way until the end, when it is finally revealed that it has been Jane all along.

  19. Someone had a link on here that made a great point. In season two finale, Jane calls lisbons phone and leaves a message giving the address of the hotel he is walking into. And then all of a sudden red john just shows up. Hmmm….strange. I keep coming back to the sick little girl from the carnival, that Jane and his dad conned her grandmother out of money. Did this little girl survive and is it van pelt or lisbon? Lisbon makes more sense because of the age.

  20. Someone had a link on here that made a great point. In season two finale, Jane calls lisbons phone and leaves a message giving the address of the hotel he is walking into. And then all of a sudden red john just shows up. Hmmm….strangeq. I keep coming back to the sick little girl from the carnival, that Jane and his dad conned her grandmother out of money. Did this little girl survive and is it van pelt or lisbon? Lisbon makes more sense because of the age.

  21. I just read a theory online or a little reveal that blew my mind. Remember in first season finale when the blood on the wall says “he is mar” well what if it says he 15 Mar. Julius Caesar. Bruno Heller, creator of the mentalist also created the show Rome on hbo. What could this mean? Could it be that red john really is janes dad or a brother he doesn’t know about?

    • A better theory is that it says 11e 15 mar….apparently those are sections in a police handbook that talks about mental stability on the job (I don’t know exactly…I read it a few weeks ago). Which could point to Jane being Red John. Along with the Tyger poem, the resemblance of the smiley face to his own, their personalities…etc.

      I hope not though

  22. If the clues are in the first episode, then think about this. Van Pelt tells in the first episode that her cousin is “psychic”. Well ofcourse she isn’t a psychic, but she could be smart enough to be Red John. I don’t know about her motives, but as someone thought she could be the sick girl in episode 2, who survived. Who knows??

  23. What if Jane left his dad with no one else to do the conning and hypnotizing or what not. And what if janes dad used either a brother of janes that Jane didn’t know about or just someone else at the carnival and that person was jealous. Jealous of Jane. Because he could never be as good as Jane. So he started to play a game with him. Just a thought. So maybe janes dad has been the number one red john this whole time. Just another theory. I still think the dying girl from the carnival flashback is either Lisbon or van pelt and that they survived. There is no doubt in my mind that van pelt or Lisbon has something to do with this. My guess is van pelt.

  24. Season 1 ep 18. Russet Potatoes. One of the many times Jane easily hypnotizes people. Here he easily gets Rigsby to do stuff. There are so many clues to Jane being red john. He is also 5′ 10. But not straight hair. I still have this feeling that we will be led to believe its patridge or someone till the end and then BAM!!!! Its been Jane all along whose been hypnotizing people to do what he wants. I think Jane hypnotized Lorelei and we just didn’t see it. Watch the way she closes her eyes with happiness and warmth as Jane kisses the top of her head In the interrogation room. It’s almost as if she felt red john himself comfort her. Lisbon looks at Jane in the strangest way.

  25. So just finished Season 4 today and had the same thoughts that Jane is Red John, but after doing some careful listening to Red Johns voice in the finale and reading about the Red John being revealed as a mid level actor I am convinced that Zeljko Ivanek(Dr. Linus Wagner) is Red John. Listening to his voice in the limo, it sounded so familiar. I did a little research and see that not only was he in the Pilot and first killer Jane solved aside from the very beginning of the episode but in Season 3, Jane and Lisbon got his help as a dying man. If Red John has help all around him the guards could easily let him out or they might be performing the murders exactly like him in his name. Time will tell if im right or not and more reasons to lead to him being RJ. O keep your eyes on Darcy, another RJ minion I believe and hope to find out what was in J.J. Larouche’s container…

  26. Not to be a know it all but its already all over the internet. Patrick Jane was 100000000% the voice of red john in the limo. Basically Simon baker holding his nose. Not sure what it means. We shall see.

  27. i think Red John is the lady of the s02e23 who missing … we don’t know if die … where is the body… ;)

  28. PJ is not RJ. It would be too similar to the “Sherlock Holmes is Moriarty” twist in the recent BBC series. It would be inconsistent with too many scenes where PJ is shocked by some new revelation of RJ. Too much like a man playing chess with himself. Not impossible to do, but not an interesting turn to the story. It should be a definite confrontation, in my opinion, like Richard Kimble’s confrontation with the one armed man in “The Fugitive”.

  29. Jane is insanely brilliant. That may be the biggest argument for him being THE red john. He is way too smart to not be able to spot a red john follower or even red john himself. He would know…. the same way it takes him little time to figure out the killer/suspect in each case.think about it. The only possible way he wouldn’t be able to know if one of his own was red john is if he was really in love with Lisbon and it RJ happened to be her..or a close follower. If he was blinded by love he may be clueless to that close person being/or working with RJ. Patrick is the best mentalist, the best at being a hypnotist..the best at just simply talking anyone (his entire CBI team of friends) into helping him do the most insane s***! The way Lisbon, Rigsby, cho, and van pelt helped him in the season 4 finale. Rigsby fiance thought he was dead!!!!! Kind of like the same way that red john gets all kinds of people to do what he asks. I def think brett stiles will be back but he is not red john. Jane, partridge, or janes dad Alex is red john. That’s it. If its anyone else then I will be glad i didnt call it. And the little girl that Patrick and his dad conned is van pelt or Lisbon. Has to be. She survived and works for RJ. Which makes me think if Jane is RJ then he felt bad for conning her and took her under his wing some time later.
