[WARNING - THIS POST CONTAINS THE MENTALIST SEASON 4 SPOILERS!!!]
After six “relaxing” months in Las Vegas, The Mentalist season 4 finale brought Patrick Jane closer to Red John than ever before – or so he thought (again). Though Red John may still be at large, the CBI now has Lorelei, one of his accomplices, in custody. Will Jane be able to “make her sing like a bird” next season?
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, series creator Bruno Heller discussed what’s in store for Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) in season 5, the dark turn the series will take next season, the move to Sunday night, how some fans will be disappointed when Red John is finally revealed, and much more.
With Lorelei (Emmanuelle Chriqui) firmly in the grasps of the CBI, fans are waiting to see how Jane will get information about Red John out of her. Even though Red John’s accomplices don’t typically survive capture, Heller says he “hopes” she’ll stick around for a bit next season – hopefully long enough to get Jane closer to Red John.
Perhaps hinting at Patrick Jane’s interrogation techniques, Heller says that fans will be seeing a darker side of Jane in season 5:
…it’s not that Jane is No More Mr. Nice Guy, but we’re certainly going to see a little more of that hard darker side of him.
The show is not going to turn into a much darker show, but that character will show more of those colors. We’re getting closer to the meat of what the show is about.
That being said, don’t expect to see Red John officially revealing himself anytime soon. If anything, it will be at least two more seasons before that actually occurs. Being completely aware of how temperamental some series fans can be, Heller says that he knows people will be disappointed when Red John’s true identity is finally revealed:
…if season 5 we just opened a door and said “tah-dah!” and it was some mid-range actor, that would be disappointing. The trick is going to be — and this is coming — bringing the audience along and making them second guess themselves and ask, “Is that him? Is that him?” Red John ultimately is just a man — whenever you see the great criminals reduced to the flesh it’s sort of disappointing. I have two seasons or so to make it come true. I can guarantee that people will be disappointed.
You might already have seen him.

When it comes to talk about future seasons, one has to touch upon CBS’ recent decision to abruptly cancel CSI: Miami without providing the producers enough time to end the series appropriately. Fortunately, The Mentalist doesn’t appear to be anywhere near the position that CSI: Miami was when it was canceled. But if it does happen, Heller promises that they’ll know well enough in advance to make sure closure is provided for fans.
It’s the job of myself and everybody else on this show to keep it working as well as it does to ensure we get that final arc. A show that’s been running this long with the degree of success it’s had, we’ll know well in advance of that sort of outcome and we’ll adjust accordingly. I’m not concerned about that.
Of course, making the move to Sunday night may still have fans worried about what may happen to their favorite series. Thanks to Sunday night no longer carrying the terrible programming stigma that it has in the past, Heller has no worries about viewers finding The Mentalist in his new timeslot.
If I thought making a fuss would make any difference then I would feel differently. But there’s aspects of this job you don’t have control over. Our audience will follow us and hopefully we’ll also find a different audience than we found on Thursday nights.
While we won’t for sure know how The Mentalist will do on Sundays nights, CBS’ decision to move the series to the weekends represents their intention to expand their schedule to include compelling series across the entirety of the broadcast week, instead of solely focusing on certain key weekday programming.
So make sure that your viewing schedules are adjusted accordingly, as Patrick Jane takes on Sunday nights this fall.

spoilers for those who haven’t seen season 4 finale, don’t read. Then again its a recap of sorts. Haha I Just realized something. My original theory of Patrick Jane is red john may be wrong. I’m starting to think that maybe the reason we hear Patrick Jane’s voice as Red John’s in the back of the limo is….what if its because Red John has had Patrick under a spell all along. If u listen closely by the way, its Patrick Jane holding his nose and slightly altering his voice on what i now realize was a pre recorded message on the phone on Wainwrights chest. So back to under a spell. Red John has been able to brainwash everyone who has done stuff for him. So maybe Patrick is a minion this whole time. Either that or they will go the route of having Jane be Red John with split personality disorder or something crazy. It’s insane that they would have Simon baker, who plays Jane, voice red john in that scene in the limo. Unless creator Bruno Heller wants us to think Jane is Red John. So he has Baker voice him to throw us off. But its not the same voice as the Red John who picked Patrick Jane up when he was tied to the chair in the season two finale. Jane is either Fight Club-crazy or that was the real Red John(Rigsby is a strong big dude who could lift Jane up that easy). I can’t wait for next season. By the way, Google Patrick Jane is voice of red john. U will see there are so many others like me who have listened to it over n over. Although I knew after the first time watching the scene that it was jane’s voice holding his nose and sounding like he is trying to do a bad impression of a female voice. It was chilling to realize that it was Jane’s voice because I was convinced since day one that this would be a show where he killed his own family because they either caught on to him being a sick puppy or he just did it because he is nuts. But now I am not so sure. Jane could just be…..I don’t know. But it’s still his voice!!!! Haha
I’ve just thought how The Mentalist will end….Jane has sleeping troubles right? How about it is ALL a dream and awakes to his Wife in his arms and Daughter waking him up? And it’s only an hour before he goes onto that chat show where he claims to know Red John!!!! Would it be such a bad ending???

I watched the finale yesterday, and whilst watching it recognized the voice as Janes, but what struck me is that the words that Red John said were all things (sentences) that Jane had said throughout the season in normal conversation, I am sure that it was a recording of his voice saying these things which means that either someone immediate to him has been recording his conversations, red John has been stalking him that close or FBI surveillance of Jane recorded his conversations. But it was definately James voice, it’s sounds weird cause it’s a recording.
I just want to f*** Lorelei legless.
Agreed!
I was sure it was wainwright so having seen the finale Im now clueless! Fantastically written and acted show but now a long wait until the next season but it will be worth the wait.
My Wife and I love the show and she has come up with an ending that would be both remote control throbbingly awful yet lovely at the same time….Jane has sleeping troubles right? What if it is all a dream and Jane is awoken just before THAT infamous interview where he denounces Red John before his family are killed? Now we could have 2 endings…Jane denounces himself as a fraudster, doesn’t mention Red John and goes home to his loved ones or…..they’re still murdered!!! Admit it, it would be a twist with a twist!!!
It would seem like a cop out ending I feel. I mean why build up this whole persona and mystery of Red John if it was all just a dream? Then they’d have to make a whole other season about how he copes AFTER he wakes up and still finds them dead. It would be a twist with a twist that left you feeling incredibly disappointed. I mean how many mystery series could they make where in the end they’d be like…. OH that was all just a dream. SUCH a cop out. Can you imagine if LOST ended like that? If they all just woke up on the plane and never crashed? Anyway, just thought I’d say this.
I agree it would be a cop out. How about this then….it turns out Jane was shot by Carter in Season 3 ending and not the other way around and Season 4 is a coma enduced state like Ashes To Ashes? And Lost was a cop out. Who was shocked with that ending?
Remember it was Wainwright that gave the Red John files to FBI agent Darcy, who soon came to the conclusion that Jane was linked to RJ! Knowing now of Wainwright’s link to RJ, he just might have planted some “evidence” to suggest Jane is linked to RJ…
I think (if anyone has seen the YouTube video) Red John could be the Red Sweater Man from the shopping mall. I do believe Van Pelt has something to do with Red John. As for voice in Season 4 finale, it not only sounded like Jane but also Timothy Carter and Brett Partridge. So the phone voice is not conclusive. But if I was Heller I’d end the show with nobody knowing who Red John was…now THAT would be a shocking and surprising end to a great series!!

i dont think that would be a good idea because many people watch the show to find out who rj is
It’s not maybe janes voice people. It IS janes voice. Anyone who disputes it isn’t listening close enough. It doesnt necessarily mean Jane is RJ but there is not a single doubt that its his voice.
I admit it probably is but I’m saying there are 2 similar sounding alternatives
After re watching the way Jane kisses the top of loreli’s head and she closes her eyes as to be so comforted by him…and then the way Lisbon looks at them, we are starting to see the red john inside Jane
Once again folks. Red john will not be revealed until the end of the show. As of right now, I think Jane is red john and van pelt is one of his disciples. Also, whoever red john is, has the amazing ability of being able to meet someone and then see the person again and the person won’t even realize they are looking at red john. Jane and him are way too similar. Both persuasive and can get anyone to do what they want.
Another weird tid bit is when red john says “debonair at all costs huh Patrick?” If u look at the street sign right before the limo crashes, they are on debonair way. No idea what it means. But the commercial previews for this episode said to watch closely every minute. Hmmm.
How’s this for a clue. When JAne and the team are in the garage getting ready to plan their little trip to meet red john, look at the book that Jane is reading. It’s Carl Jung. The brilliant psychoanalyst. Not sure what book. But Carl Jung believed everyone had two sides to them. The collective unconscious. Look it up. Now I am really convinced that Jane is Red john. Between the scene where he voices Red John and him reading the Jung book, it seems to be pointing to Jane coming apart slowly. The only reason JAne would wanna do all this though is that maybe he is so mentally ill he doesn’t realize he is red john. Maybe its part of that sleeping problem he has had since the beginning.
But how was Jane in the CBI office AND at Rosalind’s (as Red John sat down with a cup of tea in front of her) in the episode where the Morgue Attendant was killed?
Nice guess! See also the end of Season 1 when RJ is watching Lisbon coming to rescue Patrick Jane. RJ can’t just be Patrick Jane!
To be honest, every appearance of “Red John” so far could have been a disciple pretending to be the real deal.
Maybe. But then again maybe Red John is many! Stiles, Mashburn, Carter, Partridge, Fry, Red Sweater Man, Bertram… They may ALL be Red John! It can’t be Jane. It’s too cheesy. And Rosalind would have recognized Jane’s voice too. I still like the fact Carter was Red John but Jane has taken his mantra!
In the garage Patrick Jane is reading Modern Man in Search of a Soul by Carl Jung. Even more proof that he has some type of internal struggling going. Amazing. I must re watch from the beginning for other clues.
Even IF there are that many clues it’s Jane that is Red John answer me this…how could Jane be in the CBI Office AND at Rosalind’s drinking tea with her!? That’s in the episode the mortuary attendant is killed.

Go to this link and watch limo scene again. listen to when Red John says the words punished, friends, and existence. You can clearly tell it is Patrick Jane’s voice.
i beg to differ
If BH will make Jane to be the red john, he’ll be craziest mtrfkr in the world. I personally would reckon watching all those numerous seasons was nothing but a waste of time, you hear me Bruno?)))
Even if BH is a madmn, Jane cant be Red John, the whole series wouldnt make sense at all. RJ is the doctor arrested on Ss1. Same voice, same brains, same psychopath. He’z a pretty good conman. P.S Big up Sir. HELLER!!! Great mind… Almost half mine
How can jane be RJ when they met in season 2 finale?
i think its creepy forensics man/child from first episode.
ps leave grace alone!
j and p dog,,, u hit it on the head, i thought from day one it was him. all the people wracking there brains and its someone simple. heller said first show, and at end wed be dissapointed. ive gone thru every person, voices. but its simple. clues will come out but hes been around, doesnt like patrick . but likes to play with him, outwit him. its dark hair guy at first murder scene, everyone overlooks him.. you are the first one thinks same as me. we are right.. good call..
The man Jane met in the season two finale was probably a follower. Remember, RJ can manipulate, brainwash, etc. So just like Bradley whitford wasn’t RJ in season 4 finale, the guy in season two finale prob wasn’t him either.
its kristina frye ppl.
how come dude, remember the first season in that episode when that guy was released from prison and with with jane and CBI team and throw that coffee in Cho’s face then escaped, after that they found him dead and wrote on the wall (he is a man)
don’t know, but u might be right
thanx dude
Although I’m not a fan of Brett Stiles being Red John, there is one big clue it MIGHT be him. Lorelei said the one thing that keeps her a happy person is faith. And of course, Stiles is a Cult Leader. Hope it isn’t him though.
I dunno who RJ might be.. but I hope to god it isn’t Patrick Jane. That would ruin it for me and besides theres no real reason to suggest why Jane would be RJ except the voice on the phone in Ss4 finale. And that just may be Bruno just getting a good voice and that you were not meant to find out that it’s Jane’s voice. Patrick Jane being Red John makes no sense at all.
Jane’s Brother? On a side note…why was there a Cop Car coming out of the desert in the Season 4 finale? Only FBI and CBI were meant to be there. As mentioned before…was Red John driving that Police Car!?!?
I think the big question at hand for the rest of the duration of the series would be whether Patrick Jane is Red John or not.
There is a compelling argument for it being Jane. That would be dark. If not Jane, nobody could care less… nobody else would be as shocking or interesting because we’ve set up so much expectation. If as Bruno Heller says we’ll be disappointed, it’s probably going to be someone other than Jane. So the question is not “who is Red John?”. The question is, “Is Patrick Jane Red John?”
Red John could be anyone… even a woman… because as it has been shown at least twice now, we are set up to believe that Red John is a man, only to discover they were decoys, both alive and dead.
One more thing: nobody has mentioned the fact that Lorelei was going to cut off Jane’s finger… and the fact that it was not cut off could be seen to be a lucky coincidence since the CBI got there in the nick of time. I don’t think this could have been planned so closely. If Jane and Red John were one and the same, it could be that Red John was prepared to lose a finger so as to throw even Jane off further (alter ego). Red John lives for the game. He killed other people who offended him… but not Jane. If he kills Jane, it’s game over for him. So even the finger incident doesn’t mean anything. I’m not even sure that Bruno Heller has decided yet. I think he’s probably reading comments online and trying to give the least disappointing reveal depending on what people are saying online… and if someone says, “Compare these two voices because they’re the same.”… even if it was Heller’s intent, he would then be able to throw a spanner in the works to get people off that person’s scent… throw a couple of red herrings in here and there… then continue with plan A after all… or let the fans dictate in the end, either way.
The fact that Red John has disciples means that Jane could be anywhere and unaware while his alter ego was executing his plans through others. Something to consider that if Jane and Red John were one and the same, his disciples would be watching out for Jane’s safety… at least one person would be watching him and following him into dangerous situations. Jane would have noticed that.
I’m sure that if Jane were Red John then Red John’s disciples would know his weak point (while acting out as Jane) and any disciple holding a grudge against Red John could easily take out Patrick Jane to serve the same purpose… unless Red John has safety checks in place… namely disciples watching disciples.
Also, I’m not sure whether multiple personality disorders can manifest themselves like clockwork so that Jane could have regular office hours or be called upon at the drop of a hat by the CBI, unless he had certain stimuli in place having hypnotized himself to respond and switch at given times. If Red John does turn out to be Patrick Jane, I hope they will at least create some followup episodes after the story line has come to a close, giving a blow by blow of how it were possible for them to be the same person (with flashbacks of behind the scenes details). That would be satisfying. They could work these flashback scenes into a new DVD release for fans.
Another interesting twist if they decided to give it a multiple personality flavor, is have Red John be Jane… BUT not have Red John as the mastermind… have Red John as a puppet of another mastermind. Perhaps Red John was an induced state… Perhaps Patrick Jane is primarily himself, but was hypnotized by someone he offended and was caused to kill his own family unknown to himself. Perhaps the “Visualise” leader, Brett Stiles, hypnotized Patrick Jane to carry out the Red John persona autonomously. Brett Stiles certainly knows more than we realize… he tipped them off as to the whereabouts of Kristina Frye (the psychic).
Anyways, there are all kinds of possibilities. It sure would be an interesting conclusion to find that Patrick Jane is Red John, but was manipulated into committing horrific acts by Brett Stiles, who is the real mastermind playing cat and mouse, trapping someone in their own delusion… so in a sense, Patrick Jane would be both guilty and innocent at the same time. We could retain our affection toward Jane and at the same time have a shocker of a revelation.
How about Jane (as Red John) hypnotized Stiles? But this could get silly. Besides we know only weak, small minded people can be hypnotized. The only person in CBI that fits is Lisbon. The problem is EVERYONE has a clue they’re Red John. Even background actors.
Well, you have a point… weak-minded people. Only thing is how did so many able-minded people get sucked in to doing Red John’s bidding… first feeding their self-esteem, playing to their sense of belonging… then a lot of brainwashing and finally suggestion and hypnosis. Who knows… but there is an awful lot of people doing Red John’s bidding… and often they outsmarted Jane at the best of times. Any sort of speculation would be silly, I agree… and that’s what we’re doing on these forums. The problem, as you say, is that anyone could be Red John… so it’s futile to speculate… nevertheless we all like to give our 5 cent’s worth
And I enjoy my 5 cents worth too…just count my posts here! But the question regarding the Red John ideal is what does Heller want from the character? And how does he want the Series to end? Maybe he could do what they did in the programme Dallas and have a competition for the Fans to come up with the ending. Best ending wins the exclusive right to watch the last episode before anyone else. Who’s up for this?
Would be interesting… just a quick question… Has Patrick Jane’s dad appeared at any point (except in flashbacks to his early days in the circus? Sorry, can’t remember. Red John could be one of his old circus buddies… or someone he screwed over pretending to be a psychic.
Maybe it’s the Brother or Father of the Girl who suffered terrible breathing problems that Jane Sr and Jr con??! And no, we haven’t seen the Father yet bar flashbacks. Red John sounds Circus-like too!!
I remember those details vaguely… do you have a reference to this episode? Thanks.
It’s in Season One I think where Jane’s hit on the head with a baseball. Anyone else know the name of it? The only other thing I’d ask is, if anyone has noticed….is Jane’s Brother or Dad left handed?
And what do we really know about Jane’s Wife and Daughter? They could’ve been estranged. The only ‘clues’ Heller gave were: a) Red John is a man and b) If Jane is Sherlock Holmes then Red John is Moriarty. And in the books, we only read about Moriarty in the last book. And he’s not anyone mentioned before. So Red John is Patrick Jane’s twin!!!!!

Well, Heller is going to delve into the darker side of Patrick Jane next season… so I’m not convinced about an evil twin brother. It’s either a very dark twin brother… or it’s a very dark Jane. I don’t think we can have both. The idea of a twin brother sounds fascinating though… but a little too similar to Dexter season 1. Many people say will be disappointed if PJ turns out to be RJ, but I think it’s one of the strongest cases we have… and quite the opposite… I think that knowing who the “villain” is, can sometimes create suspense, especially in how we anticipate what people’s reactions are going to be… like we all know that Dexter is a serial killer… but it was pure magic when we saw Deb walking in on Dexter plunging a knife into the doomsday killer’s heart.
I never saw Dexter. And Heller has suggested people will be disappointed when he reveals Red John. And PJ will be a disappointing end. BUT what if…PJ isn’t PJ? The Wife and Daughter died because they knew PJ was already killed by Red John? In other words, PJ the viewer knows is Red John but also, the PJ we know actually isn’t and never was PJ! If that makes sense?
I myself have considered that Jane might be Red John but personally, I truly hope he isn’t, for me, it would spoil the entire show, I want to see Patrick get vengeance for his family, I want to see Rigsby and Grace get together and I want Jane & Lisbon have a happy ending,(get married, have babies blah blah blah) but I’m just a sucker for happy endings, I love reading everybody’s ideas though, you all have me thinking now! Lol Can’t wait for season 5 but being from the uk I’ll have to wait a little longer than you guys from USA, feel free to post the episodes online so I can watch them sooner hahaha
P.S I Love Cho!
Won’t be Jane. Too many people expect that as an ending now. And Heller has indicated it’ll be a man. Recently, I am starting to get the strange idea it could be Jane’s Dad!!! Really, no clues. Just instinct.
God, the longer this goes on the more Heller reveals himself as a talentless hack.
The red john stuff lost an relevance or interest years ago, he’s this totally unbeliever super criminal with slaves and followers everywhere who can do anything.
I hope Heller gets fired and they can hire someone else who can get Red John caught in the first episode next season and get this rubbish over with.
I see your point. I think they could wrap it up in one more episode if they wanted to… but they would need to be hot on RJ’s tail EVERY episode to keep my attention for another season… not just the last 2 episodes. All the other episodes are just killing time to fill up a season. It’s gotten boring like this a number of times before. They should at least take down one of RJ’s disciples each episode… AT LEAST!
Heller said he will only serialise the last season IF fans want that. Have you read my theory that maybe Patrick Jane isn’t Patrick Jane?? Have a read as it’s 2 comments up from here.
Red john is Kristina Frye !!! Pour plus d’info contacter moi sur mon facebook : saad laabori
For those of you who are concerned with RJ voice. there are many computer program that can change your voice to sound like another person. There is no doubt that RJ has the resources to record the voices from the teem and mix them to sound like Jane or Van Pet ecc ecc….
Then about Walter Mashburn, Rosalind the blind girl said that RJ is just under 6 feet tall and not vary muscular , Mashburn is taller that 6 feet and vary muscular. The forensic guy is the only one that feet’s that description.
If Patrick was RJ lisbon will absolutely lose her mind and kill him, I have no doubt and Rosalind would have recognized him .
The waitress at the mall was in it, agent Dursy is in it, director Bertram is in it and the Ron guy in vary ambiguous, but he could be.
Patrick, i think hypnotized Lorelay wile making love and now hi is going to use that to get her to talk.
But I hope she is not going to mess to much with Lisbon, her character is wonderful and i hope she can convince Patrick to not Kill Red John and leave it up to the teem to arrest him.
One more thing, I think that RJ is going to target Lisbon, hopefully with out hurting her to much.
I think if there will be a dark side of PJ, maybe there is smtk related to his earlier life. Did you pay attention how they used to make the trick with recognizing thinks through the black face-cover in the casino ? Patrick remembered the same scene from his childhood…there is a question, who is the guy that had a similiar height and similar voice to him, and helped during shows ? Maybe there is a twin, or another guy, that used to be behind scenes..Did you mentioned “he was opening my shows”…It can be related with the fight for fame between old 2 “magicians” …but..the devil hides in details…and coming to help the CBI officers can be just the idea of the boat they where looking for..it was hiden in the police parking ))
this way..what if the actual patrick jane is the true red john, the PJ twin. He said, he wants to REVENGE – Maybe he killed PJ’s family, and hide true PJ dead body, then in the season 3 he wanted to end it with being RJ but that serial killer just provocked him..and FBI guys were close to catch him.
However it will be, If in the next season there will be evidences that patrick jane is red john, it will be only the victory of RJ over PJ (and pay attention, the letters are very similar). PJ refused to start a new life and to accept RJ’s friendship
But I would really be dissapointed if RED JOHN is an old men, disabled person, who can’t move and cant get out of his house..but has a very sharp brain..he felt he is gone to die and proposed PJ peace and frienship. As PJ refused, he will go in jail as being recognized as ill and true Red John. Understanding who and why is RJ existing, comes from his first victim. But all this will not make sense, as PJ will stay in jail and real RJ will naturally die in his house, somewhere in the forest. 10 years later teenagers looking for adrenalin will travel around his house..the will find the place with the dead body…
I get what you’re saying… Maybe Red John is Steven Hawking!
Bruno Heller from what I can tell is an intelligent man for the story line itself. Patrick is NOT Red John. That would just P-ss me off..and I’m sure MANY other die hard fans of the show. with the level of thought that goes into each episode, I’m sure Bruno Heller has something a little more thought out than a cheesy ending like PJ being RJ. That would be too much like the
:Hide and Seek: movie…I myself like the idea of having to wait to find out who really is RJ. Anyone who is or has been a fan of great mysteries knows the value of great suspense , and this whole show is suspenseful in its attention to the details that leave you guessing. Keep up the good work Mr Heller! and don’t listen to some of the simpletons that seem to want their “Nancy Drew” easy solve and disappointing conclusions. Do it how you wanna …just DON’T DISAPPOINT us TRUE mystery suspense Fans.
^I completly agree:D with all the really unsuspected events in each season, there’s no way heller would end with something everyones expecting, personally I think it would be good if he does at least one more season..:)

Ok Stella, and everyone else here, let’s start our own ‘How would you end The Mentalist?’ Competition. I’m going for the revelation that Lisbon inadvertently discovers the Real Patrick Jane was killed by Red John many years ago. And the Daughter and Wife were killed as they realised their Dad/Husband was dead and who killed him. And Lisbon eventually finds this out too. And this leaves a final scene of Lisbon v ‘Jane’.
All of u people who say it isn’t Patrick Jane, I half agree with u. But until u explain why or how they use janes voice as red johns in the season 4 finale limo scene…..I don’t wanna hear that u know for sure he isn’t. Either its a twin or its him. Or explain why it was his voice in the limo. Is he red john and pre recorded the voice? It would make sense, since loreli and the driver killed wainright and she some how heard janes voice as RJ but didn’t say “why does, that sound like u holding ur nose?” She was brainwashed. When she slept with jane, she was sleeping with RJ.
consider a voice changer device. I tried just a simple program on the mac and I can tell you that you can transform the voice to make it sound like somebody else . rosalind who’d have recognized Patrick as Red Jhon.
Voice changer or not that was patricks voice in the limo.
Maybe. But in Episode 23, Season 4, the girl in the cemetery with the Smiley Face on her palm, did say that Red John had a strange voice. That could excuse any voice heard in the car. But Darcy is obviously a Red John aide!
