The Men Who Stare At Goats

Some days Hollywood actually provides something that actually puts a smile on my face. Such is the case today with the release of the trailer for The Men Who Stare At Goats, actor/writer/producer/director Grant Heslov’s big-screen adaptation of author Jon Ronson’s 2004 non-fiction book of the same name.

The film stars George Clooney and Ewan McGregor, with co-stars like Kevin Spacey and Jeff Bridges helping to inspire the military hijinks. The trailer really is a MUST-WATCH, so after we catch you up on what the film is about with a quick synopsis, we’ll get right to it.

Here the official rundown on The Men Who Stare At Goats:

A reporter (McGregor), trying to lose himself in the romance of war after his marriage fails, gets more than he bargains for when he meets a special forces agent (Clooney) who reveals the existence of a secret, psychic military unit whose goal is to end war as we know it. The founder of the unit has gone missing and the trail leads to another psychic soldier who has distorted the mission to serve his own ends.

Ok, so from that you COULD derive that this film was Push 2 or something, but after about 5 seconds of the trailer, I’m sure you’ll shed that misconception:

Jeff Bridges plays Bill Django, founder of the psychic soldier program and Lyn’s mentor. Kevin Spacey’s character, Larry Hooper, is a former psychic soldier who is running a prison camp in Iraq.

The big thing people seem to have with this film is its title – it confuses them as to what the plot of the movie is (or so it’s been said). Well, I think the title is hilarious and a perfect send up of military “research.” Come on, even all you pro-military Screen Rant readers out there have to admit its pretty funny to try to develop psychic weapons by having soldiers stare at goats! In that context, the title really speaks to the absurdity of warfare and certain militaristic mindsets (I AM NOT BAD MOUTHING THE MILITARY). So scary to think this all happened (is happening?) in real life…

It’s also great to see George Clooney yet again flexing his comedic muscles. Like Hugh Jackman, it’s just hard to hate the guy…

The Men Who Stare At Goats will be in theaters on November 6, 2009. What did you think of the trailer?

  1. lol this i wanna see

  2. I actually find it very easy to hate Clooney. He more often than not makes me sick to my stomach. The things the guy says and believes. The film looks ok so far, but given who’s involved in it I find my self worried the entire project is gonna end up being an extreme “lets bash the soldiers” project.

  3. Oh jeez Dan F…

Shouldn’t staunch military supporters have thicker skin?

And guys, Hollywood is a BUSINESS. And they know their audience doesn’t go for “hate the troops” films. And if they DIDN’T know before, they sure as hell learned from that brief string of Iraq War films. Flop, flop, flop, flop, flop…

  4. This looks very Cohen Brothers

  5. Caption to the above picture of Clooney:

“This was bad enough without them giving the thing a Brazilian wax job…”

  6. I liked the Jedi bit with Ewan. lol.

    It looks funny

  7. Looks funny, but I’ll have to pass. I have a personal boycott against George Clooney, and won’t go see anymore of his movies.

  8. Looks funny. Glad to see Jeff Bridges in a comedy. He looks better than Clooney and somehow even Ewan MacGregor.

  9. I think it looks funny as hell.

  10. That looks HILARIOUS !

  11. What ever Kofi. The fact is Cloony is a very outspoken douche. Also this has nothing to do with thick skin I have no idea what that has to do with anything. No matter how thick your skin is that doesn’t mean you enjoy watching films that go against everything you stand for.

  12. There was no laugh out loud parts or anything really cool in this for me.

The cast is amazing so I hope it’s entertaining.

  13. @ Dan F

Fair enough. I understand hating some actors, best believe.

  14. Got a lot of laughs out of this one, but I do have to wonder if the timing is really as good in the film as it is in the trailer.

  15. Looks like a big bag of crap to me, despite a great cast. Jon Ronson’s original documentary Crazy Rulers Of The World (of which The Men Who Stare At Goats was just one part) was about Vietnam veteran Lt Col Jim Channon’s bizarre concepts for a New Age army being used ultimately for psychological warfare. The Jeff Bridges character is presumably supposed to be Channon. Unsettling, yes. A comedy, no.

  16. This looks fantastic. And I will gladly support Clooney and his movies… screw you rightwing nutjobs! Clooney for life!

  17. Like the Cohen brothers meets Monty Python…I like George Clooney, Ewan McGregor, Jeff Bridges and Kevin Spacey so it merits keeping an eye on ..don’t want to see anything else on this film until I see it on the big screen..I haven’t seen a single clip from The Hangover..no trailers, no promos, no clipsI won’t even stay in the same room with people who are discussing it..Nada!! I want to see that movie unspoiled to see if it is as good as it is cracked up to be…

  18. This looks like a winner. Hopefully it doesn’t disappoint.

  19. Remy you don’t have to be right wing to hate Clooney and his outsponken douchebagery. I’m a libertarian no where near a right wing nutjob as you put it.

  20. @ Daniel F

Yes, because soldiers are above everyone else and can’t be picked on. Soldiers are Gods. All hail the soldiers. Jesus.

  21. By all means huggybear lets insult and blindly bash men and women who put their lives on the line everyday for their country.

  22. @Remy O

Nice. How about if I come back with “screw you Left-wing commie bastards?” How’s that?

    @Huggybear

What the hell, man? Of course soldiers aren’t above everyone else but they do put life and limb on the line so how about a little respect or at least compassion? Have you ever served in the military? I have.

    Vic

  23. What I thought was funny Was the idea tha Clooney stared down the goat and that was seen as a “psychic mind blast”.
I think its really making fun of some of the crazy programs the government endorses.
Just my opinion of the trailer.

  24. Clooney. I will never see another one of his movies if he were the LAST actor on earth. He’s an ANTI AMERICAN douche bag that should be living in ANOTHER country. Nor sarandon, nor robbins, nor…..the list goes on & on.

He shouldn’t even wear a military uniform. It’s like a slap in the face to the men and women who DIE to keep us free & safe.

He should follow Johnny Depp’s example and get disgusted enough to LEAVE. Home of the FREE. Home of the BRAVE. Love it or LEAVE it. I’m sure France would welcome him with open arms.

  25. Tweeb–Free speech means everyone EVERYONE has the right to say what they want whether or not you approve. Clooney, Fonda whomever has a voice. Get over it. You are trying to squash the very thing you claim to love. We should speak out about things that are wrong and war is one of them. Hate the war not the warrior.

  26. i didn’t say they should be silenced & forced out. I said they should choose to leave. Notice the reference to Depp up there?

  27. Because they have an opinion opposed to yours? Do we have to love everything about our country to be welcomed here? Can we not hate war and power mad bullies and still love our country? Or do we have to be mindless love it or leave it zombies that think anything and everything our government is just dandy? Are you a Stepford wife? Do you want all of us to be?

  28. Sorry-I just get fired up when these so called Americans forget why the forefathers established this country in the first place.

  29. It’s okay BSL (fitting).. I used to think like you until i decided to think for myself.
