Some days Hollywood actually provides something that actually puts a smile on my face. Such is the case today with the release of the trailer for The Men Who Stare At Goats, actor/writer/producer/director Grant Heslov’s big-screen adaptation of author Jon Ronson’s 2004 non-fiction book of the same name.

The film stars George Clooney and Ewan McGregor, with co-stars like Kevin Spacey and Jeff Bridges helping to inspire the military hijinks. The trailer really is a MUST-WATCH, so after we catch you up on what the film is about with a quick synopsis, we’ll get right to it.

Here the official rundown on The Men Who Stare At Goats:

A reporter (McGregor), trying to lose himself in the romance of war after his marriage fails, gets more than he bargains for when he meets a special forces agent (Clooney) who reveals the existence of a secret, psychic military unit whose goal is to end war as we know it. The founder of the unit has gone missing and the trail leads to another psychic soldier who has distorted the mission to serve his own ends.

Ok, so from that you COULD derive that this film was Push 2 or something, but after about 5 seconds of the trailer, I’m sure you’ll shed that misconception:

Jeff Bridges plays Bill Django, founder of the psychic soldier program and Lyn’s mentor. Kevin Spacey’s character, Larry Hooper, is a former psychic soldier who is running a prison camp in Iraq.

The big thing people seem to have with this film is its title – it confuses them as to what the plot of the movie is (or so it’s been said). Well, I think the title is hilarious and a perfect send up of military “research.” Come on, even all you pro-military Screen Rant readers out there have to admit its pretty funny to try to develop psychic weapons by having soldiers stare at goats! In that context, the title really speaks to the absurdity of warfare and certain militaristic mindsets (I AM NOT BAD MOUTHING THE MILITARY). So scary to think this all happened (is happening?) in real life…

It’s also great to see George Clooney yet again flexing his comedic muscles. Like Hugh Jackman, it’s just hard to hate the guy…

The Men Who Stare At Goats will be in theaters on November 6, 2009. What did you think of the trailer?

  1. So you attack me. The last stand an ungrateful American will take when they have nothing intelligent to say. You are ungrateful and you disrespect the flag by denying someone their freedom of speech.

  2. Guys, guys – let’s back it down please.

While I agree with Leech, Tweeb has as much right to say what he thinks as the people he’s calling out.

  3. BSL the last stand an ungrateful American will take? Like people don’t use insults on every side of every argument? It’s a common internet debate move to switch to personal attacks. It doesn’t matter what the subject is or what side they are on. Just like you trying to discredit the entire side of an argument by saying only they resort to personal attacks.

  4. Vic-:-)…Anyways, it looks like a good movie. Ewan MacGregor has one of those accents that sneaks in no matter what he’s trying to do. Like Gerard Butler! (Gamer in 6 days-woohoo!)

Daniel F-you made me laugh. It’s like someone turning an argument from what the original discussion was to arguing about the way we’re arguing. Weak. That’s right I’m not insulting you, just your argument about the discussion.

  5. The argument is between you and Tweeb I’m not involved in it. I don’t actually agree with Tweeb on the like it or leave it statement. There was no reason for me to help his argument. I’m just pointing out how you were being just as childish as him.

  6. I’m more like Jello

  7. ok. ok. BSL. I will man up and say I’m sorry. I should keep my views to myself. We don’t come here to relive the politics we see everyday. I am sorry that I was rude.

  8. @Everyone – How did we get on to a political discussion involving a trailer about a guy staring down a goat? I dislike Brad Pitt’s views on just about everything (except women) but today I watched a program called Holmes on Homes where he and Brad Pitt were helping to rebuild a woman’s house in New Orleans. Pitt isn’t doing the manual labor mind you but the idea was his and I believe he is helping with the cost as well. All of his views I disagree with aside, that’s a great thing he is doing and I at least respect him for that. Not sure how that ties into Clooney but I figured since we were off topic…

  9. Holmes on Homes is a Canadian show on HGTV…Now that’s way off topic Paul!! :)

  10. Tweeb, yeah this film is a subtle jab at the dark programs the military is involved with. It ties into remote viewing. I wish they would have used that for the title. The current long title sucks. I’ll see this if works slow that friday, if not then on dvd. I do agree with Daniel that Clooney is a d-bag. 😉

Btw, Its the media spin and the government parties that divide the people, as so clearly pointed out in the comments here. Divide and conquer is the plan,,,

  11. @790- actually it was ME who referred to Clooney as a douchebag.. (just want to clear that up in case Daniel doesn’t think the same)

I have been trying REALLY hard to ignore the media for the past few months because I’m totally burned out on it all. I have been plastered to the news since 9-11-01 & feel like it’s driving me out of my bloody mind.

That is why I have been going to more movies as I shift my attention to things that I don’t have to think about too intensely. Sometimes my red headed temper gets out of hand. Especially when people read into things that are obviously not there.

  12. Wait! Was George Clooney doing a Wolverine impersonation there with imaginary claws? LOL!

  13. Wolverine impression. ouch!

  14. Actually Tweeb I agree that clooney is a Dbag basically said that as well. What I said I didn’t agree with you on was the Love it or Leave it mentality on the US.

  15. @Claude

haha it totally looks like it^^
but this movie looks fun, so i think im gonna watch it:)

  16. @Tweeb

You need to disconnect from the news from time to time or it’ll just put you in a lousy mood 24/7. I actually stopped watching TV news or listening to any talk radio a month before Christmas until the holiday season was over. Worked wonders on helping me get in the proper mood. :)

  17. I with you on that one Vic. Everyonce in awhile I do the same. I can never completely cut out the news, but when ever I need a break I just switch to the Joke news by watching Late Night shows like Conan or Fallen. That way I can just laugh at the little news lol.

  18. Tv news media is the most controlling life changing, brain washing device on the planet Earth and beyond the solar system…

GK333, its even worse,,, the tv/cable news propels people to turn on each other through fear and bias. Democrats Republicans Liberals Conservatives, Its all about dividing the people so that they don’t see the bigger picture/lie.
Inbetween the mindless false reality shows that numb the lowlifes/slaves, they advertise/sell drugs (like crack dealers) to our families and grandparents for problems they create through growth hormones in the food and pollution from a planetwide addiction to Oil…

TV is the false prophet for our generation…

    That’s why I prefer films,,,, 😉
Hey tomorrows Monday,,,,, more bad news,,,lol,,,

  19. I don’t care for the title of the movie because just based on the title alone I figured this movie would be stupid. But I’m glad I watched this trailer and found it to be pretty damned funny indeed.

As for George Clooney and any other actors political views, I could care less. It’s not going to keep me from watching a good movie and enjoying their acting skills. And I also don’t see anything offensive about this movie.

  20. The Dude is now a general, man.

  21. Mandarr i agree that an actors political views won’t spoil me from seeing good movies. I don’t agree with lots of actors I still watch their films. My thing is not what they say off set, but what movies they choose to make. Tim Robbins is a great actor and makes great films, but I don’t like hearing him talk because I think he’s an idiot. Clooney has similar view poitns, but most of his movies tend to be on the same exact mindset of the things he says outside of his film.

  22. Anyone remember DreamScape- Denis Quaid & Christopher Plummer?
