Fantasy is a hot topic in TV right now, and Fox is making a strategic play for next season. They’ve purchased the rights to The Magicians based on the Lev Grossman novel of the same name, and tasked Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz (X-Men: First Class and Thor) with writing the pilot.

The novel version of The Magicians follows Quentin Coldwater, a Brooklyn teenager who finds out that the classic fantasy books he loves are more than fiction. Quentin is recruited Harry Potter-style into Brakebills, a school for magic in upstate New York, and upon graduating discovers that there’s a strange truth in his childhood favorites, which are loosely based on C.S. Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia. The novel was published to critical acclaim just two years ago, and its sequel The Magician King came out in August.

Miller and Stentz are known for their recent movie work, but they’re familiar with the small screen as well. Both of them have partnered on writing and producing for fellow Fox shows Fringe (including some of the best season 2 episodes!) and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

Previously the duo worked on Andromeda and Agent Cody Banks. Producers for the project are Michael London (The Illusionist) and Shawn Levy (director of Real Steel).

Fantasy is in right now, and not just because of Game of Thrones on cable. ABC is preparing to launch Once Upon A Time, a fairy tale turned on its head, also set in New York City. The show centers on a town filled with fantasy characters that don’t know who they are. Early critical reaction is solid, and the show is scheduled to debut on October 23rd.

Grimm is NBC’s take on the dark fairy tale, and  follows a descendant of the famous writers who must fight supernatural monsters to protect his home of Portland, Oregon. Grimm will bow less than a week later on October 28th.

  1. I don’t think this book will translate into a network TV show easily. Cable, yes. FOX, no.

  2. I’m looking forward to it. The problem is that Fox will probably cancel it, just like it did Terminator, and Dollhouse, and Firefly, and etc. :/

  3. I’ve never heard of the book series but it sounds interesting enough.
