The Last Airbender Trailer Delayed

M. Night Shyamalan’s adaptation of the hit cartoon series Avatar: The Last Airbender is one of my most anticipated films of 2010. The film, titled The Last Airbender to avoid confusion with a certain other movie coming out in two weeks, premiered a teaser trailer this summer but we’ve not seen anything major since.

The Last Airbender marks not only the largest-scale production for writer/director Shyamalan, but the first time he steps out from his trend of original work to direct an adaptation of an established and popular franchise. I for one, think this is fantastic for fans of the series and moviegoers alike.

In August, we heard from producer Frank Marshall that they were working on a trailer for Christmas, likely to be attached to Avatar or Sherlock Holmes but now comes news that it won’t be happening.

On Twitter (again), Marshall updated eager fans with the following tweet:

“Not enough ILM shots finished, so LAST AIRBENDER trailer will not debut until Feb…”

I’m disappointed to hear this but would rather wait for the finished product, not some rushed work. I was a big fan of the series and watched all three books (seasons) back-to-back last summer as the show came to its conclusion after telling a complete and perfectly structured story. It’s something I highly recommend for all ages.

While I’m a fan of The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Signs and The Village, M. Night’s series of films have been on a downward spiral since his early work and his last two films were simply not good. With The Last Airbender set to start a trilogy and all things pointing up (despite some casting controversy earlier in production), I believe this is the career changing film for the director and I have high hopes for it.

Is this movie on your list of movies to see next year or do you need to see more before deciding?

The Last Airbender blows into theaters July 2, 2010 and I’ll be there.

  1. although i much prefer having a well done trailer than a sloppy one i was EXTREMELY excited to see the avatar in order to see the airbender trailer. just as long as the actual movie isnt pushed back i guess.

but YES i will most definitely be seeing the last airbender, midnight release with all my friends and family members, we LOVE the show.

  2. that blows…

  3. Well perhaps M.Night’s career isn’t in the ash heap yet. When I first clicked on the thread I thought the worst. But I’m willing to accommodate the effort if the problem is genuine. With all the effects activity going on, I can see something like this happening. I remain on the fence at least until the trailer, but if it’s just so-so or it gives the whole movie away as some have I’ll keep my cash in reserve until a couple of reviews are out and then decide…

  4. Sad news about the delayed trailer. I wasn’t expecting so this article telling me it’s delayed is the only reason I know about the trailer at all, and I probably won’t be seeing either of the two movies it would have been attached. Hopefully it’ll end up being paired with something I’ll actually see. I’m looking forward to this movie. Love the show more than anything from nickelodeon, except maybe invader zim. M. Night’s movies have always entertained me. I have doubts about his ability to contribute to avatar. It’s not like he’s going to throw a twist in at the end of the movie. Avatar saves the world from the firelord, but the firelord never existed. It was all a trick to keep the people from leaving.

  5. This is sad news in a season of sad news (i.e. same kind of delays happening with a lot of fan favorites these days it seems). I agree with the common sentiment here though, as long as its being delayed for the right reasons and it means an even more bad ass trailer in the long run, then I am all for it.. I am a huge fan of the avatar series, my son who is not quite 6 turned me on to it (im pushing 30 lol). Anybody who is a fan of great story telling, superb character development, awesomely intricate and interwoven plot subtleties, intelligent but at the same time slapstick style humor, (the list goes on and on) simply cannot deny the greatness of this cartoon, nor its strong potential to translate into a great movie. I am also a huge fan of M. Knight, Unbreakable was one of the greatest superhero movies of all time at a time when it wasnt the current trendy thing to be making superhero movies, and although his last two or three movies did indeed seem almost laughably horrendous on a lot of levels, you gotta admire the guy’s courage in bringing uniqueness of his own brand during a time of way too much sameness going on. I cant wait until summer 2010, may it be a great summer for all of us after this ongoing winter of b.s., lol….

  6. Im sad to hear about this. I was looking forward to finally getting a better look at these characters come to human life, especially Sokka – he’s hands down my favorite. Hoping they can get the new trailer up sooner rather then later.

And I agree this is a step out of MNight’s comfort zone so Id rather have to wait a little longer for something good then get something shoddy and thrown together.

  7. Well M Night continues his trend of involving himself in dung heap movies, the best thing he has done for years was his Entourage cameo!

  8. @DrSam

Kinda putting the cart before the horse with the dung heap comment there aren’t ya? That is unless of course you have seen the film or the aforementioned february trailer.

  9. What’s this bullcrap with “his last two films were simply not good”?

You mean to say “I didn’t LIKE the stories of his last two films”, don’t you? There IS a big fracking difference between the two statements.

His last two films were just as “good” as his earlier films: they were just as well shot, as well acted, as well directed, as well structured.

People bitching and moaning about Lady in the Water and The Happening simply “didn’t like the stories”.

Well, thank god that Shyamalan isn’t an AUTHOR. He’s a FILM MAKER. There’s a hell of a lot MORE to a film than simply the story. So you didn’t like the stories. Big fat hairy deal. There ARE others who DID like them. For example… me.

HOWEVER, that doesn’t stop the FILM MAKING involved in those projects from being of the same caliber as the earlier films. The cinematography, the composition, the textures, etc… ALL are of the same high degree of craftsmanship.

And before anyone says his films are “not good”, they need to seriously stop and consider if “the story” is the only thing that makes a film “good” or not. If that’s ALL that matters to you, then I suggest you learn to read and stop watching movies, because film is ALSO a “visual medium”, and relegating all of the art and craft that goes into making a film to the background, with ONLY the “story” getting first billing, is missing the point completely.

So YOU didn’t like the story. That doesn’t mean SQUAT. It means YOU didn’t like the story. And it sure as hell doesn’t mean that the films were “bad”.

    /rant off

(I am SO sick of hearing all this Shyamalan trashing… it happens at EVERY one of his films, and every time the stpry changes: “his first film was great, but his 2nd one sucks”… “oh his first two films were great, but his third one sucks”… “jeeze, his first 3 films were great, but his 4th one sucks”…

And every single time, the film everyone was trashing the year before joins the ranks of “his first x-number of films” which were “great”.

    Oh the hypocrisy.

/ok, rant off for real this time

  10. I guess I’m a hypocrit too because I thought his last few films sucked.

  11. I’m glad to read a little defending of Shyamalan here. He seems to have become a fanboy whipping boy lately, but I for one was quite pleased when I heard he was attached to “Airbender.”

I loved the cartoon (I’m in my 40′s) and while, in total, some of his films may fall short of greatness, I think of individual scenes from many and teh way he creates suspense and emotional subtlety is masterful. I hope the excellent source material from Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko will break Shyamalan out of his creative navel-gazing rut and let his craftsmanship shine.

I’ll reserve judgement, but I definitely have high hopes for “Airbender.”

  12. I look forward to this movie. I could care less if I never see another trailer.

When Shy puts his name on a movie, it is “his” movie. Sorry The Happening just didn’t happen for me… :D

However again a movie is made up of various people. So unless it is written, directed, produced, staring, etc one person, it is really hard to put the blame.

However as my love for this series is immense If he screws it up I will never watch anything with his name attached again.

Here is a clue…. .take your name off of it. The Last Airbender is good enough we dont need “a film by”.

  13. It’s sad actually, I’ve been waitin for that trailer for much too long. They should realease it as soon as possible

  14. i'm really excited for this movie..it sucks though that the trailer was pushed back but now its only a month or less away. i'm a huge fan of the series and hopefully enough people make this movie a hit so that way the next two will be made..we deffinately don't want an eragon or the golden compass to happen with this because the next two parts are my favorite compared to the first…i'm skeptical about m.night directing because of his movies not being the best..but i just keep thinking that he didn't come up with avatar so maybe it won't be bad…i can't wait
